Estimate stars for the Queen in Gold Cup

Report: Royal Ascot, Thursday, Gold Cup (Group 1) 2m4f, 4yo+

ESTIMATE provided the Queen with a famous Royal Ascot triumph when she captured the Gold Cup on day three of racing’s most prestigious meeting on Thursday.

Last year’s Queen’s Vase winner, who is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, rallied gamely under Ryan Moore to edge out Simenon and Top Trip in a thrilling finish to the fixture’s feature race.

The Queen, who became the first reigning monarch to win the race, was seen cheering home her four-year-old in enthusiastic fashion, while the 7-2 winner was greeted by huge cheers from the crowd.

Estimate, a daughter of Monsun bred by the Aga Khan, was settled in midfield by Moore as German raider Earl Of Tinsdal set the early pace.

He was closely followed by Saddler’s Rock in second with last year’s winner Colour Vision third.

Moore always seemed confident and his mount improved her position as the race reached its closing stages, hitting the front only to be challenged by Simenon and Top Trip, who came late and fast.

Simenon, a dual winner at the royal meeting last year and trained by leading jumps trainer Willie Mullins, looked a huge threat under Johnny Murtagh, but Estimate held on to delight racegoers and her famous owner.

Stoute said of his 66th Royal Ascot winner: “She showed a lot of courage and was always in a lovely position. She switches off so well.”

Stoute, winning his first top-level race since Workforce’s Arc success in 2010, added: “It’s a great thrill and honour as we know how much she [the Queen] loves the game.”

It was a second Gold Cup triumph for Stoute – he won it with Shangamuzo in 1978 – but a first for Moore, who said: “She won well. We had a great draw, she relaxes well and has a good attitude. She was always holding on. It’s fantastic to ride a winner for the Queen.”

Mullins, “pleased and disappointed” with the performance of Simenon, was equally honoured to have played a part in one of racing’s great days.

“The stands erupted, you could see everyone wanting to get to the front to see, and I’m sure it’s a very good result for racing,” he said, adding of his gallant second: “He’s run a career-best.”

Also on Thursday, King George V Stakes (Handicap) 1m4f, 3yo

A DOUBLE for the Queen, which would have lifted the roof off the grandstand, failed to materialise as Bold Sniper ran a gallant race finishing third behind Elidor.

Trained by Mick Channon, 20-1 chance Elidor was giving Martin Harley his first winner at the meeting, with the jockey describing it as “a dream come true.”

All eyes were on Bold Sniper, who was sent off the 7-2 favourite, but despite Ryan Moore’s best efforts the colt ran out of steam deep inside the final furlong, with Elidor a length clear while Space Ship took second at 16-1. Fourth went to Cap O’Rushes at 20-1.

Channon said: “We thought he had a decent chance, he’s a smashing little horse.”

JERSEY STAKES G3: 38, 39 e 40. Ahh come corre il contavittorie di Aidan O’Brien al Royal Meeting. Nella prima prova della seconda giornata ha ottenuto il suo personale 40th vincitore grazie a Gale Force Ten (Oasis Dream) con Joseph O’Brien in sella, che dal centro della pista si è impegnato per piegare le velleità di un Montiridge (Ramonti) che sembrava vincitore poco prima del palo, ma comunque in versione super, con allo steccato delle tribune l’errante Tawhid (Invincible Spirit). Quarto è finito Garswood (Dutch Art). Gale Force Ten, che lo scorso anno aveva vinto le Norfolk qui ad Ascot, era terminato 4° nelle Poule d’Essai des Poulains G1 del 12 Maggio scorso a Longchamp e secondo nelle Irish 2,000 Guineas del Curragh dietro Magician 13 giorni dopo. Gale Force Ten era favorito a 4,5 ed il tempo finale sui 1400 in pista dritta è stato di 1m 25.32s (fast by 0.68s).

DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES G2 (ex Windsor Forest Stakes): Ha risolto Duntle (Danehill Dancer) la quale, squalificata lo scorso anno nelle Matron Stakes G1 di Leopardstown, si è presa la rivincita quest’anno crescendo corsa dopo corsa e risolvendo in bel finale a 4 cavalle in lotta, nei confronti di Lady’s First ((Dutch Art) per mezza lunghezza, con Dank (Dansili) al terzo. Lanfranco Dettori ancora quarto con Beatrice Aurore (Danehill Dancer). La vincitrice è allenata da David Wachman per la famiglia Niarchos, aveva in sella Wayne Lordan. Ancora irlandesi sugli scudi! Tempo finale di 1m 39.47s (slow by 0.47s).  

PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES G1: Al Kazeem (Dubawi) è il cavallo più in forma d’Europa al momento. Con un guizzo risolutivo ha raggiunto Mukhadram (Shamardal) sul quale Paul Hanagan pensava di aver fatto tutti i conti giusti scatenandosi in avanti in una sorta di falsa andatura (comunque ritmo onesto) con fuga in dirittura. James Doyle, alla prima vittoria al Royal Ascot prima di una tripletta d’autore, l’ha capito subito e non è rimasto troppo lontano dalla testa, raggiungendo l’Hamdan, lottando (nella foto) e sopravanzandolo nella fase finale nonostante questo abbia anteposto molto della sua fisicità. In tema di fantini, William Buick lontano dalla miglior forma, con un tempismo errato è finito forte su The Fugue (Dansili) la quale, comunque, al rientro e contro i maschi, ha corso alla grande. Quarto Camelot (Montjeu) ancora non al meglio…Il vincitore è un figlio di Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) di proprietà del signor Deer allenato da Roger Charlton, cresciuto tantissimo nella stagione. Imbattuto nel 2013, ha ottenuto il suo secondo G1 consecutivo. Per il vincitore tour estivo e forse il tentativo nell’Arc. Il tempo della corsa è stato di 2m 3.06s (fast by 2.54s).

MARTEDÌ 18 GIUGNO 2013. Report RoyalAscot: Declaration Of War di forza nelle Queen Anne, Sole Power all’ultimo tuffo nelle King’s Stand. Dawn Approach torna ed in lotta risolve nelle St James’s Palace Stakes, battuto Toronado di una corta testa. Nelle Coventry War Command

 

 

QUEEN ANNE STAKES: Inizio scintillante per il Coolmore nel Royal Ascot 2013! Il team di Ballydoyle ha vinto la prima battaglia nella lunga strada del meeting grazie ad un esaltante prestazione diDeclaration Of War (War Front) nelle Queen Anne Stakes G1 che ha dato ad Aidan O’Brien il 38th vincitore nella storia del Royal Ascot. Il figlio di War Front (Danzig), con in sella Joseph O’Brien, è emerso negli ultimi 50 metri sul calo di Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality) quando questa, passata presto, ha finito per pagare il lungo rientro, comunque 4°. Declaration ha vinto per 3/4, il margine sarebbe potuto essere maggiore ma il varco non si è aperto subito (vedi Elusive Kate), ma è fuori di dubbio che Declaration si sia ampiamente rifatto della brutta prestazione nelle Lockinge G1 di Newbury il mese scorso. In lotta per le piazze sono finiti anche Aljamaaheer (Dubawi) e Gregorian (Clodovil), arrivati rispettivamente secondo e terzo, finito forte anche Trade Storm (Trade Fair) mentre nulla da fare per il favoritissimo Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux), irriconoscibile ed intrappolato in una andatura lenta ed in un tipo di corsa non propriamente nelle proprie corde, è arrivato 11° su 13 senza mai essere della partita. Joseph O’Brien ha parlato dopo la corsa: “Non so cosa sia successo nelle Lockinge, ma mio padre ha detto che non era abbastanza in forma. Stavolta ha dato il 100%, è veramente un buon cavallo”. In riferimento ad Animal Kindgom, che sembrava Dawn Approach nel Derby per come tirava, John Velazquez ha riferito con un laconico..”non era lui”. Tempo finale sul miglio in pista dritta di 1.38.48 e quota del vincitore di 15/2.

KING’S STAND STAKES: Sole Power (Kyllachy) ha risolto all’ultimo tempo di galoppo, complice anche la fascia di terreno favorevole e lo steccato delle tribune, battendo di un soffio il favoritissimo sudafricano Shea Shea (National Emblem) sul quale Cristophe Soumillon credeva di aver fatto tutto secondo i piani. Si conferma lo scarso feeling del fantino francese con i tracciati inglesi. Terzo è arrivato in lotta, subito dietro ai primi, Pearl Secret (Compton Place). Il vincitore è uno specialista dei 1000 metri, ha sei anni ed è figlio di Kyllachy (Pivotal), stallone ricercatissimo in oriente per via del suo grande apporto di velocità, allenato da Edward Lynam e montato da quella volpe di Johnny Murtagh. Sole, che pagava 8/1, in Inghilterra ha ribaltato il riferimento di Marzo a Meydan, quando perse proprio dal Sudafricano nell’Al Quoz Sprint G1. Tempo finale di 58.88s (fast by 0.62s).

 

 

ST JAMES PALACE’S STAKES: Jim Bolger è un fenomeno! E che carattere Dawn Approach (New Approach). A 17 giorni dal Derby il figlio di New Approach (Galileo) è stato ripresentato al meglio (stupendo al tondino) nelle St James’s Palace Stakes ed è tornato ad essere se stesso: forte, combattivo e per nulla intimorito dalla lotta che si è venuta a creare dai 400 quando, complice un cross al centro della pista, è stato sbalzato verso l’esterno coinvolgendo anche Toronado (High Chaparral) con il quale si è staccato in una lotta furibonda protratta fin sul traguardo, bellissima. Il fotofinish ha decretato la vittoria del sauro di una corta testa, anche dopo intervento dei commissari per il cross a metà retta iniziato da Glory Awaits su Magician e a cascata sui primi due all’esterno con Toronado che ne ha fatto le spese in modo maggiore, per come viaggiava, e Manning, Hughes, O’Brien e Spencer chiamati in Steward room per una decina di minuti almeno, ed infatti da celebrare anche la riscossa dell’High Chaparral di Hannon, il quale, anche lui, si è ampiamente rifatto della brutta prestazione di Newmarket quando perse anche la piazza nelle 2000 Ghinee, trovando stavolta più congeniale un tracciato come quello di Ascot e scacciando via le voci su un presunto “dislocamento del palato” dopo la Classica. Si rivedranno forse a Goodwood (sicuro Dawn, non troppo Toronado per via del tracciato). Terzo è finito Mars (Galileo), quarto Mshawish (Medaglia D’Oro) allo steccato, con Dettori. Tempo finale 1m 39.23s (fast by 0.77s). Finora “irish power” ad Ascot; nelle prime tre corse hanno vinto allenatori irlandesi (O’Brien, Lynam e Bolger).
COVENTRY STAKES G2: L’O’Brien che non ti aspetti. Nella prova dei puledri che l’anno scorso ha laureato Dawn Approach) a vincere è stato un portentoso War Command (War Front), bellissimo e di mole, che negli ultimi 200 metri ha lasciato a distanza siderale Parbold (Dandy Man) e Sir John Hawkins (Henrythenavigator) con al quarto Thunder Strike (Sakhee’s Secret) ancora con Lanfranco Dettori in sella. Non una edizione esaltante delle Coventry forse, ma il vincitore (che pagava 20/1) aveva in sella Seamie Heffernan per i colori di Joseph Allen e, come Declaration Of War, è un figlio dello stallone americano War Front (Danzig) che funziona in America alla Claiborne Farm in Kentucky al tasso di $80,000. Tempo finale sui 1200 metri di 1m 12.86s (slow by 0.46s).
