JIM BOLGER nabbed two of the prizes on offer at Newmarket on Dubai Future Champions Day as Dawn Approach extended his unbeaten record to six and stablemate Trading Leather joined him in the reckoning for next year’s Classics.
Dawn Approach was giving Bolger an incredible fifth win in the last seven runnings of the Dewhurst Stakes and he is now as short as 5-2 for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas next May and 5-1 for the following month’s Investec Derby.
Bookmaker opinion was however divided after this last win, the odds-on favourite was made to work over a furlong from home and he can be backed at 5-1 for the Guineas with Ladbrokes and 12-1 for the Derby with William Hill.
After watching Dawn Approach win by two and three quarter lengths Bolger said: “There were no real anxious moments today. He just has a lazy style of racing. Once Kevin [Manning] wound him up, there were never any concerns.
“Kevin says he will get further but I think he we start off over a mile next year and take it from there.”
Trading Leather made it two wins from three starts as he came out on top in a duel with Montiridge in the Group 3 Autumn Stakes.
“I’ve liked him for a long time,” said Bolger. “He’s very dependent on the ground and needs it good – it would not have been suiting him that well today.”
Looking to the future, Bolger added: “He’s in the Racing Post Trophy but it all depends on the ground. We will probably look towards the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial next season and then the Derby.”
