Captain Ramius has been backed into a best-priced 16-1 for the Gold Cup

KEVIN RYAN has won two of the last five Ayr Gold Cups, including last year’s race with Our Jonathan – who bids for back-to-back wins in the race, but it is the trainer’s Captain Ramius who has come in for heavy support on Saturday morning.

A 33-1 shot overnight, the six-year-old is now a best-priced 16-1 after Pricewise tipster Tom Segal nominated the mount of Pat Smullen as his selection.

Our Jonathan heads the market at a best-priced 10-1 and owner Dr Marwan Koukash, who has won the race for the last two years, said on The Morning Line: “He won last year and we have the same stall and similar ground, although it is a little bit heavier, and a similar mark so I think he will run well.

“I also own Brae Hill who we decided to run as with the ground it may take a horse like him who stays seven furlong or a mile to win this race, but of the two I think Our Jonathan is my best chance.”

Ayr also plays host to the William Hill-sponsored Silver and Bronze Cups, while there are three Group races – including the Mill Reef – and Newmarket where the Cesarewitch Trial is the feature. Action also comes from Catterick, Listowel and Wolverhampton.
