I’ll Have Another: sold to stand at Big Red Farm in Japan

I’LL Have Another, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has been sold to stand at Shigeyuki Okada’s Big Red Farm in Japan. The news, reported by the Daily Racing Form, comes two weeks after injury thwarted his Triple Crown bid on the eve of the Belmont Stakes.

I’ll Have Another is the first Kentucky Derby winner since the 2002 scorer War Emblem to start his stud career outside the US. War Emblem was also sold stand in to Japan as was the 1989 winner Sunday Silence, who became an outstanding stallion.

I’ll Have Another joins a roster of 11 other stallions at Big Red Farm including Conduit, Sir Michael Stoute’s dual Breeders’ Cup Turf winner, and Stay Gold, the sire of last season’s Japanese Horse of the Year Orfevre.

I’ll Have Another retires as the winner of five races from seven starts and $2,693,600 for owner Paul Reddam. Trained by Doug O’Neill, whose brother Dennis purchased the colt for $35,000 at the OBS April Two-year-old Sale, the son of Flower Alley took the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby before sweeping the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

He was bred in Kentucky by Harvey Clarke out of the winning Arch mare Arch’s Gal Edith. She is the dam of two other winners and hails from the further family of Grade 1 winner Roanoke.
