Sizzling Pace Set at Opening Night

at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga

Monday night’s session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale put the auction on pace to top the past two record-setting years.

For the session, 77 yearlings grossed $38,910,000 for an average of $505,325 and a median of $400,000. With 20 horses reported as not sold, the buy-back rate was 20.6%.

Those figures are well ahead of last year’s opening session.

The number of $1-million horses on the evening tripled in number, to 6 this year, while the number of yearlings selling for over $500,000 was up by 62%.

The $3.4-million topper, a Not This Time colt from the family of MGISW Colonel John, was the only horse Kim Nardelli consigned to the sale. He was purchased by Amr Zedan, who also bought the topper last year, a $4-million Curlin colt out of champion Beholder.

Young Hill ‘n’ Dale sire Charlatan was represented by five first-crop yearlings that grossed $3,075,000 and an average of $615,000. His top seller was a $1.5-million half-brother to leading freshman sire Complexity, consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised, who went to Resolute Bloodstock.

Resolute Bloodstock’s John Stewart bought five yearlings at Monday night’s session, including a $1.7-million Gun Runner colt, and a $1.5-million Charlatan colt who is a half to Complexity. Resolute’s gross for the five purchases was $5,425,000 for an average of $1,085,000. They marked his first-ever purchases at Saratoga.

Airdrie stallion Complexity, who is leading all the freshman sire metrics this year and was just represented by his first European graded winner last weekend, had only one yearling entered, a $130,000 filly (hip 73) purchased by August Dawn Farm. An ownership share in the stallion will open Tuesday’s session.

Tonight’s final session starts at 6:30 p.m.

This session will open with a keynote presentation titled “Lessons From The Battle To Do Good” by sustainability expert Bob Langert, who led McDonald’s social responsibility and sustainability efforts for more than 25 years and shaped the corporation’s commitment to supply chain, animal welfare, environmental protection and nutrition strategy.

He also led the development of McDonald’s 2020 Sustainability Vision and Framework, and in 2019, he published The Battle To Do Good: Inside McDonald’s Sustainability Journey, which explores lessons learned from the fast-food giant’s journey across turbulent times, in particular the importance of how – and why – leaders should confront societal issues to help both their business and society prosper in an increasingly intricate and interconnected world.

Bob will lead the delegates on a deep dive into how these lessons can be applied to racing and other sports, including the importance of transparency, proactive social management and the need to engage with your toughest critics.
