Opening Day at Fasig October:

What Did We Learn?

Monday’s first day of the Fasig-Tipton October sale produced an average and a median which were both ahead of the sale records set for those metrics at the 2021 auction. The sale average set during last year’s four-day sale is $45,672, while the record median, also set last year, is $25,000. During Monday’s session, 253 yearlings grossed $12,342,100 for an average of $48,783 and a median of $27,000.

The Green family’s DJ Stables, which purchased the top lots at Fasig-Tipton July and at OBS October, was in action Monday, purchasing the day’s highest-priced colt, a $400,000 son of Into Mischief. The operation also purchased a colt by Gun Runner for $200,000 and a son of Vino Rosso for $60,000.

Into Mischief had the day’s two top-priced yearlings, with Ben McElroy and trainer Wesley Ward bidding $425,000 for a filly by Spendthrift’s super sire and DJ Stable going to $400,000 for a colt by the stallion.

The first yearlings by Into Mischief’s son Audible continued to be popular in the sales ring with three selling for six figures Monday, led by a $220,000 filly who sold to Main Line Racing,
John Servis agent.

Arrogate was represented by a pair of yearlings in the top five Monday, with Donato Lanni going to $350,000 for a daughter of the late champion and Oracle Bloodstock going to $275,000 on behalf of Pine Racing Stables for a colt.

Sam Brown
Charlie Hall Chase, Wetherby, October 29
1pt each-way at 25-1 with bet365, Betfair and Paddy Power, 16-1 generally

What a weekend we have in store with the possibility of Ahoy Senor and Bravemansgame renewing their rivalry for the fourth time in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday (3.35).

The scoreline reads 2-1 to Ahoy Senor, but this is a deeper race than the pair’s early odds suggest and it is always worth treading cautiously with novices (even high-class ones) running in open company for the first time. Both are likely using this as stepping stones to bigger things too.

Eldorado Allen is officially rated superior to both, while Dashel Drasher and Secret Investor are each rated 3lb lower but receive 3lb from the big two.

This will be a cracking race if the big guns all stand their ground. However, that is no guarantee looking at the weather forecasts.

The ground is good to soft at the time of writing but plenty of rain is forecast from Wednesday through to Saturday and conditions could ease quickly.

Bravemansgame was withdrawn on account of soft going at last season’s Cheltenham Festival and lightning could feasibly strike twice, while Ahoy Senor’s trainer Lucinda Russell is also keeping an eye on the weather.

One horse who won’t mind testing conditions is the improving Sam Brown, who produced an outstanding handicap victory off a mark of 147 at Aintree last April. He pulled 15 lengths clear of the well-handicapped Shan Blue off similar terms that day and they were ten lengths ahead of the third.

While Sam Brown is a ten-year-old, he remains incredibly lightly raced for his age and has surprisingly ran in as many races as the seven-year-old Bravemansgame (13).

I definitely think Sam Brown could progress again this season and he has run well fresh in the past, so I was shocked to see him available at odds of 20-1 for the Charlie Hall.

Presumably that is partly due to Sam Brown’s additional entry in the Grand Sefton, run for similar prize-money at Aintree the following Saturday.

However, the 2m5f trip there might be sharp enough and he would concede lumps of weight to the field off a mark of 157. His best form is over three miles and beyond.

Winning the Charlie Hall would be the biggest achievement of trainer Anthony Honeyball’s career so far and Sam Brown could catch some of the bigger names off guard. He doesn’t have loads to find to be a major player and an each-way bet is advised as only ten runners are entered with three places available.

Glittering Weekend For Goffs Graduates

Just as the dust settled on a record breaking Goffs Orby renewal, graduates of the flagship sale ripped up a storm on the international stage this weekend, headed by Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Dubai Mile. The son of Roaring Lion just held off November Foal joint Sale topper Arrest by a head for second.

The Group 1 win was the highlight of a phenomenal weekend for Goffs graduates which saw nine Group and Listed wins on the international stage including five Stakes wins for Orby graduates across the UK, France & Germany, a Listed win & Group 1 second for November Foal graduates, Group 2 success for Autumn Yearling graduate Vero Atleta and Grade A Handicap Chase victory for Land Rover graduate The Big Dog.

Dubai Mile leads home Arrest in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud

Dubai Mile was sold by Hollyhill Stud to Mark Johnston at the Orby Sale and joined Tranquil Lady in providing an across the card Stakes double for Orby graduates with the latter recording a taking win in the Group 3 Prix de Flores. The half-sister to the formidable State Of Rest was bought by Richard Ryan for Teme Valley Racing in 2020 from her breeders Tinnakill House.

Another Saturday Stakes double for Orby graduates was recorded at Newbury, where Max Vega landed the Group 3 St Simon Stakes for Ralph Beckett and the Pickford Hill Partnership, while Magical Sunset demolished her rivals by five lengths in the Listed Radley Stakes for Richard Hannon and Amo Racing. Magical Sunset  was sold by Alice Fitzgerald to Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock whilst Max Vega was sourced by her trainer from her breeder, Stanley Lodge.

Meanwhile in Germany, 3YO Orby graduate Goldana trounced her opposition by five lengths in the Listed Alson-Trophy at Hanover. The black type win further bolsters the pedigree of Killourney Mor’s star mare Humble And Proud, dam of Orby graduate, Listed winner & leading Breeders Cup contender Love Reigns. Goldana was also an Orby yearling when bought by Brummerhof Stud from her breeder.

Along with the aforementioned Group 1 runner-up Arrest, the Ger Lyons trained Power Under Me provided further black type success for graduates of the November Foal Sale, with a second win at Listed level in the Knockaire Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday. The tenacious son of sire sensation Mehmas was bred by Nanallac Stud who sold him to Wyanstown House for 28,000 at the 2018 November Foal Sale.

Meanwhile, Vero Atleta paid testament to the quality of the commercial yearlings on offer at the Autumn Yearling Sale, with the 2YO following up a recent Listed win with Group 2 glory in Sunday’s Premio Gran Criterium at San Siro, Italy. Marco Bozzi sourced the son of Gleneagles from the Castletown Stud draft for €28,000 last year.

3YO filly Emily Dickinson ran away with the Group 3 Comer Group International Loughbrown Stakes at Leopardstown for the Coolmore contingent. While the Dubawi filly has never gone through a sales ring, her dam is none other than Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale topper Chicquita, who set a record for the sale when realising €6,000,000 from the Castlebridge Consignment by way of Peter and Ross Doyle for Coolmore.

Lastly in Limerick, Land Rover graduate The Big Dog took the honours in the Grade A JT McNamara Ladbrokes Munster National Handicap Chase for Peter Fahey. The Land Rover 3YO was bought by Aidan Fitzgerald for €20,000 from Derrygrath Stud.
