Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal cruises to March Stakes victory at Goodwood
Saturday: William Hill March Stakes (Group 3), Goodwood
Hoo Ya Mal justified clear favouritism to land the Group 3 March Stakes under William Buick.
The George Boughey-trained three-year-old, who finished second to Desert Crown in the Epsom Derby at 150-1, was sent off at 30-100 and pulled two and a quarter lengths clear of the Queen’s Perfect Alibi.
Only four contested the Group 3 renewal, with Animato and the 64-rated Pink Fire Lilly completing the field.
Despite his comfortable victory, there was slight concern with Hoo Ya Mal after the race as Buick dismounted him when returning to the winner’s enclosure as he appeared to be moving gingerly after losing a shoe.
“He took a funny step when pulling up and I think the ground shifted beneath him, but I’m not too sure what the problem is,” said Buick.
Tougher assignments are expected for the colt as he holds entries for the St Leger at Doncaster, Irish St Leger at the Curragh and Melbourne Cup.
