Tuesday, July 19: King George countdown, Royal Ascot winner sold to race in Hong Kong plus your exclusive daily tip. All this and more in today’s newsletter . . .

The big story

Saturday’s headline act, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (3.35), has been whittled down from 15 to six - but what a field we have.

Westover, Emily Upjohn, Mishriff, Pyledriver, Torquator Tasso and Broome remain on course to clash in the big one at Ascot and the small but select field is sure raise eyebrows once more.

Small fields have blighted racing over the last year, and indeed this summer, but Ascot’s director of racing isn’t too concerned.

‘Who was going to run?’

Nick Smith told us: “It has all the elements you would want, even without Desert Crown. You have potentially the best three-year-old colt, the most exciting three-year-old filly in training, the Arc winner and Mishriff who brings the Eclipse form.

“We’ve seen this throughout the summer. The Eclipse had a small field, the Prince of Wales’s, the Coronation Cup, the horses just aren’t there. It’s quite hard to say what horse could you put in that field that’d make it a better race – apart from Desert Crown, who was going to run?”

Bring on the super six.
