If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That appears to be the mantra of Sandy Thomson as the Borders trainer attempts to win the Coral Scottish Grand National for the first time on Saturday.

 

Thomson hit the crossbar in the 4m Ayr marathon when popular chaser Seeyouatmidnight came third in 2016, while Dingo Dollar was a narrow second last year behind Mighty Thunder.

 

He will be doubly represented this time with The Ferry Master, fourth 12 months ago, and Hill Sixteen, who concedes weight all round.

 

“We’ve been second, third and fourth in it now so hopefully we’ve found the one to get his head in front!” he said.
