2022 Breeze Up: a top-quality catalogue with exceptional sire power

The leader in Europe, each year the ARQANA Breeze Up brings together a selection of the highest quality two-year-olds through the ring at Deauville. A quality that is then shown on the racetrack, like MALAVATH, bought by David Redvers from Star Bloodstock last year, that won the Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte (Gr.2) before finishing runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf (Gr.1). Also on American turf, ROCKEMPEROR took the Joe Hirsh Turf Classic Invitational (Gr.1).

This season, Breeze Up graduates CASH, CHANCELLERY, ELDAR ELDAROV, MARE NOSTRO, MASCAGNI, KNIGHT OF HONOUR, THUNDER ROAR, TYLOS and WAKABURN are among the European classic prospects.

Leading Sires of 2YOs

The two-year-old sales season has kicked off with OBS March,
and once again, Into Mischief distinguished himself with strong sales figures, including two of the four seven-figure sales horses at the auction.
That stands to reason: he’s almost always the leading sire of 2yos in North America, taking the crown in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020.
He was dethroned only twice in that period, by the late Scat Daddy
in 2017, when Mendelssohn earned over $700,000, and again last
year, in 2021. As we get ready for 2yo racing, we thought it would be
interesting to know who knocked him off the top spot then,
and is sure to do battle with him again in 2022?
Who is he?

Goffs: Flooring Porter Lands Second Consecutive G1 Stayers’ Hurdle

The Goffs Land Rover Sale continued to make headlines on the third day of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival with another Grade 1 victory, this time in the day’s championship race.

Flooring Porter’s second successive triumph in the Stayers’ Hurdle for Gavin Cromwell, the Flooring Porter Syndicate and Danny Mullins was the third Grade 1 win by a Land Rover Sale graduate at this year’s Festival and it was a 1-3 in the race for the Land Rover Sale as Paisley Park, victorious in the 2019 renewal and third to Flooring Porter last year, was sold at Kildare Paddocks in 2015.

Not only was the sale celebrating a 1-3 in the race, so too was Richard Rohan who bought both Flooring Porter and Paisley Park as foals and offered them through his brother-in-law Michael Moore’s Ballincurrig House Stud at the Land Rover Sale.

Rohan purchased Flooring Porter, who was bred by Sean Murphy, from Ryehill Stables at the 2015 Goffs December National Hunt Sale and he is now the producer of eight Cheltenham Festival winners headed by the Gold Cup heroes Looks Like Trouble and War Of Attrition.

I am delighted with the result especially as they weren’t expensive horses and I try to buy around 20 foals every year that are relatively inexpensive to sell as three-year-olds so to have two of them go on to be Stayers’ Hurdles winners is wonderful,” said the delighted Rohan.

“He was out of a good racemare and by Yeats who I was fond of as a stallion and I liked him as a foal. I don’t spend too much time going over pedigrees, I like to see a nice, athletic individual and go from there. He didn’t leave me much profit when I resold him but he has paid me back many times over

“He was always a little tiger and I knew he was going to make it as a racehorse because he had that attitude, he is a big man in a small man’s body like a terrier and was always the boss of the group.

“It is great to see a syndicate winning a Grade 1 race at Cheltenham with a horse that was relatively inexpensive. It shows that racing is for everyone and it is important that people going to the sales with less than €20,000 to spend see that it is possible to buy top-class horses for an affordable price. Hopefully that encourages people to come to the Goffs Land Rover Sale and see the Ballincurrig House Stud draft this year.”

Goffs: Sir Gerhard Heads Land Rover Sale Double On Day 2 At Cheltenham

The second day of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival continued where Tuesday had left off with further Grade 1 success for Goffs Land Rover Sale.

Sir Gerhard, a dual Goffs graduate, won his second successive top level race at the Festival following on from last year’s victory in the Champion Bumper. The son of Jeremy added a third Grade 1 from just seven starts in today’s opening Ballymore Properties Novice Hurdle for Cheveley Park Stud.

Trained by Willie Mullins, Sir Gerhard was bred by the late Jonathan Fitzpatrick whose family’s Keatingstown House Stud sold him as a foal to Peter Molony at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Molony’s Rathmore Stud went on to produce him for the Goffs’ Land Rover Sale where he sold to Ellmarie Holden’s Coolmeen Farms.

A delighted Molony reflected on Sir Gerhard’s comprehensive success in the rain-softened ground at Cheltenham.

“It was an amazing win and really exciting, he is such a big powerful horse. We went down to see him before the race in the pouring rain and he looked so imposing. The fact that he has stepped up the extra half mile in trip opens all sorts of doors for him and he is a very exciting horse for the future.”

Sir Gerhard’s victory was the second Grade 1 success in less than 24 hours at Prestbury Park for a Molony purchase at Goffs. Tuesday’s outstanding Champion Hurdle heroine Honeysuckle was bought by Molony on behalf of Kenny Alexander at the 2018 Goffs Punchestown Sale.
“I keep saying it but Honeysuckle is an unbelievable dream, it’s incredible. The main thing is she can run any way – from the front or held up, slow or fast pace, quick ground or heavy ground – she always finds a way to win,” remarked Molony of the unbeaten champion.

Molony is an integral member of the Goffs’ Land Rover inspection team and with duties almost complete ahead of this year’s sale, he is looking forward to another strong catalogue with potential Cheltenham stars.

“We have seen some lovely horses on our inspection tours and I think we are near enough finalising the selections. It’s a very exciting time and over the last ten years the sale has turned inside out with the quality and depth to be found now in the catalogue. It’s a privilege to be part of the team and we are really looking forward to this year’s sale.”

Grade 3 Coral Cup Handicap winner Commander Of Fleet was the second Land Rover Sale winner on the second day of the Festival. The winner of the 2018 Goffs Land Rover Bumper was sold by Mount Eaton Stud to Margaret O’Toole at the previous year’s sale and the Grade 1 winning novice hurdler was also runner up in the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle on his previous visit to Cheltenham.

Having won the very aptly named Goffs Future Stars Bumper (Gr2) in scintillating style at the Dublin Racing Festival last month, it was wonderful to see Facile Vega, the son of Quevega and Walk In The Park, go on to land today’s Grade 1 Weatherbys Champion Bumper in similarly impressive style for the Hammer & Trowel Syndicate and Patrick Mullins, giving trainer Willie Mullins a remarkable 12th win in the race.
