05/03/2022. Mondo Ippico Internazionale, Dubai: Alfareeq upsets in Group 1 Jebel Hatta as Lord Glitters comes unstuck

Alfareeq (right) wins the Group 1 Jebel Hatta as Lord Glitters (left) finishes sixth – Edward Whitaker – By Scott Burton

A slow pace and trouble in running meant it wasn’t to be for evergreen Lord Glitters as Alfareeq and Dane O’Neil powered up the rail to score for trainer Musabeh Al Mheiri.

It was O’Neill’s second Group 1 success, having partnered Muhaarar to land the 2015 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot

Alfareeq has proved tricky at the start but boasted smart form earlier in the carnival, having finished second to Real World in the Group 2 Zabeel Mile.

O’Neill said: “They’ve done a great job with him doing the stalls work, Shane Ryan and Musabeh, and he’s got plenty of ability. He quickens up good, this horse.

“It was probably a little bit stop start for the favourite, they didn’t go a true enough gallop to come from off the pace. I stalked it and got lovely splits. This horse has got a lovely turn of foot.”.

Simon and Ed Crisford had to settle for second with Finest Sound in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, having also filled the runner-up spot with the same owner’s Without A Fight behind Hukum earlier on the card.
