Vente d’Elevage reaches new heights
|
|
|
The fourth and final day of the Vente d’Elevage saw 159 mares, fillies and foals go under the hammer. More than 80% of the lots that went through the ring changed hands for an average price of €4,578, generating a turnover of €586,000.
Assessment of the 2021 Vente d’Elevage: an exceptional edition
The last sale of the year in Deauville, the Vente d’Elevage recorded record results at all levels. Over the four days, 76% of the 907 horses offered were sold for an unprecedented average price of €60,314 which for the first time rose above €210,000 for Part I.
The final turnover of €41,556,000 exceeding the €40 million mark for the first time.

Sumbe tops consignors’ table
Offering their first ever consignment in their blue and yellow colours which included the exceptional performers ROUGIR and SPEAK OF THE DEVIL, Sumbe topped the consignors’ table with a turnover of €5,352,000. The runner-spot went to Haras des Capucines, that sold 22 lots for a total of €3,373,000, with a top price of €2 million for PURPLEPAY. Notably the vendor of GRAND GLORY, Haras de Castillon completed the podium with 18 lots sold for €3,155,500.
Fourth on the list, Ecurie des Monceaux sold 21 lots for a total of €2,519,000, followed by Gestüt Ammerland, that also had a very good sale, notably offering WILDFEDER, a half-sister to Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr.1) winner WALDGEIST, that was sold for €2,050,000 to Crispin de Moubray.

Buyers’ table: Oceanic Bloodstock takes top spot
The purchaser of seven lots for €4,950,000, Michel Zerolo (Oceanic Bloodstock) was leading buyer at the sale. He was followed by Anne Sophie Yoh (YOHEA) with four lots bought for a total of €2,572,500 and Crispin De Moubray with three purchases for €2,096,000.
Following the sale, ARQANA Chairman Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said: “After a turbulent 2020, 2021 has been marked by tremendous resilience at all levels and concluded with an outstanding Vente d’Elevage that exceeded all our expectations. With five millionaire fillies in the first session and a turnover in excess of €40 million for the first time, the sale continued its upward trajectory and has now taken on a whole new dimension. All the ingredients were present and this resulted in very good prices in the ring. Four of the five fillies sold for a seven-figure price were acquired as yearlings at Deauville in August or October, and some owners did not hesitate to reinvest during the sale, such as with Tickle Me Green and Sun Bear. The quality of the catalogue attracted many buyers from the United States, Japan, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Spain, Italy, Turkey and all over France. We would like to thank our vendors who entrusted us with the best of their breeding and racing stock as well as all our teams who worked tirelessly to make this sale a success. We wish everyone a very happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you in February.”

HISA to Take Over OOC Testing in July 2022, Race-Day Testing Start of 2023 (by TDN)
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) announced the proposed implementation date of the Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program Tuesday, saying out-of-competition testing would be administered, under HISA’s jurisdiction, beginning with the program’s effective… [To read this entire TDN News Story, click here.]

A bit of juice has been squeezed from the price of Silver Hallmark in Saturday’s Racing Post Gold Cup at Cheltenham (1.50) in recent days but he is still a decent each-way bet at 8-1.
The Fergal O’Brien-trained chaser is as short as 5-1 with a couple of firms and I make that a fairer reflection of his chances.
Silver Hallmark simply must have a few pounds in hand based on his comeback fourth in the Colin Parker at Carlisle in October.
He was badly treated by the conditions of the race and had to give 6lb to the winner Fiddlerontheroof, who since ran a stormer when second in the Ladbrokes Trophy and is rated 159.
The improving seven-year-old was also conceding 6lb to the 160-rated Espoir De Romay, who finished only a nose ahead of my selection in third.
I was surprised the handicapper left Silver Hallmark on the same mark of 145 after he produced a career-best RPR of 152 at Carlisle.
He has also been entered at Doncaster in a 3m handicap chase on the same day but I can’t see why connections would go there instead.
The Doncaster race is run for vastly inferior prize-money and Silver Hallmark doesn’t shape as if crying out for that trip just yet either.
This heavy-ground Grade 2 winner is expected to get the conditions he relishes at Cheltenham as plenty of rain is forecast up until racetime.
Gabynako
Faugheen Novice Chase, 2.40 Limerick, Sunday, December 26
1pt each-way at 10-1 with Betfair and Paddy Power
Betfair and Paddy Power are the only firms to have priced up the Grade 1 Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick on December 26 and it is no surprise they are offering 8-15 quotes about Bob Olinger.
However, the gifted six-year-old might not be bulletproof as a novice chaser. His enormous engine is undeniable but he showed a tendency to jump out to his left at Gowran Park in his beginners’ chase victory and looked a little sloppy at times.
It is unknown whether he will run at this right-handed track for the Faugheen anyway. He has been entered at Cheltenham on Saturday and I find it hard to believe he will tackle both races.
The last four runnings of this Grade 1 show you should never run scared of one horse as four odds-on favourites have been beaten.
Asterion Forlonge (SP 4-6) in 2020, Samcro (4-6) in 2019, Getabird (8-15) in 2018 and Al Boum Photo (1-2) in 2017 all failed to deliver in fields with fewer than eight runners.
Field sizes in that period of 5776 suggest betting each-way for three places is the value ante-post play and Gabynako appeals at 10-1.
His trainer Gavin Cromwell also has Albert Bartlett winner Vanillier in the race (also 10-1), but he has been crying out for further over fences and will surely line up in the 3m Grade 1 novice chase at Leopardstown a few days later.
There is no doubt Gabynako would have beaten Beacon Edge in the Grade 1 Drinmore last time had he not met the last two fences all wrong. He rallied admirably when headed but it was too little too late.
The six-year-old jumped well apart from those two errors and definitely has the ability to land a top-level novice chase.
The beauty of betting ante-post in races like this is Gabynako could finish third of five runners on the day and we’d still collect a few quid.
I remember backing Janidil each-way at 10-1 for three places for this race in advance last year. He plodded round to finish a remote third of five runners at 11-2 but I was still paid out a small profit.
