Prolific source of Group 1 success…

Results on the international stage and pinhooking profits are why Goffs November Foals are simply unmissable for anyone interested in buying a foal, whether they aim to resell or race.

For end users, the past year has seen a number of star performers illustrate this point.  Three-time Group 1 winner Alcohol Free was bought to race by her owner Jeff Smith as a foal at Goffs November, as was the recent Keeneland Grade 1 winner Blowout for Chad Brown and owner Peter Brant who purchased her as a November Foal.  Last season’s World’s Best Racehorse Ghaiyyath is another excellent example having been purchased by Godolphin at the November Foal Sale.

Other Group 1 graduates include our cover horse Romantic Proposal who was pinhooked from the November Sale by Amy Lynam and won the Group 1 Flying Five Stakes on Irish Champions Weekend, River Boyne who was a Grade 1 winner in the US last year having been pinhooked from the November Sale while Thundering Nights, winner of the 2021 Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes, was also offered for sale as a foal in November.

Spectacular pinhook triumphs…

The pinhook results from Goffs November Sale saw numerous touches landed at the 2021 yearling sales headed by the half-brother to Lucky Vega that was pinhooked from €300,000 as a November Foal to become one of the highlights of Orby 21 when sold by Coulonces Sales to BBA Ireland/Yulong Investments for €630,000.  The Orby also saw a €70,000 November Foal resell for €270,000, a €30,000 foal become a €150,000 yearling and €75,000 grow to €225,000, whilst elsewhere a €260,000 November purchase returned a mighty profit of over €730,000.

Commenting on publication of the catalogue, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said:

“As the premier European foal sale, Goffs is proud to present the very cream of the Irish crop at this year’s November Sale.  The 1015-strong November Foal catalogue is sure to draw every major buyer to Kildare Paddocks next month in search of their next Group 1 winner or pinhooking triumph.

Our message to vendors this year was to stay close and go far by selling in Ireland at Goffs, and we are thrilled and supremely grateful that so many are sending their best foals to the November Sale once again”.

First day of the October Yearling Sale: a lively market

The second major event of the year dedicated to yearlings, the October Yearling Sale began on Monday with Part 1 of the catalogue. The day was marked by a buoyant market, with all the indicators reaching unprecedented levels. Of the 218 yearlings sold in the Deauville ring, 83% were sold for an average of €88,983, up 10% on the 2019 edition when it broke the €80,000 barrier for the first time. Testifying to the dynamism of this first day, 53 yearlings were sold for €100,000 or more compared to 29 in 2019. The turnover amounted to €16,017,000.

Son of Camelot makes top price at €440,000

Consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux, a son of Camelot out of dual Group 3 winner and Group 1 runner-up BOARD MEETING (lot 209) was subject to long battle between Nicolas de Watrigant (Mandore International Agency) and agent Anthony Stroud. It was the former that had the final say at €440,000 for the colt, a half-brother to Listed winner BIG BLUE, from the family of French Champion Three-Year-Old BRIGHT SKY.

“He’s a lovely colt by Camelot and his dam was placed in the Prix de l’Opera (Gr.1). I’ve bought him for M.V. Magnier, for whom I bought a son of Camelot in 2018 named MYTHICAL, that is now Group 1 placed. He’s a stallion that we like a lot and we’ve had a lot of success with. We’re very pleased,” said Nicolas de Watrigant.

€420,000 for a son of Wootton Bassett

Making their presence felt throughout the day, Anthony Stroud and Matt Coleman bought a total of 14 yearlings for a total of €2,315,000, spearheaded by lot 49, a son of Wootton Bassett from Ecurie des Monceaux, the first foal out of a half-sister to triple Group 1 scorer CHARM SPIRIT.

“He’s an exceptional colt that we like a lot,” commented Anthony Stroud. “We still have to discuss his future plans, but we’re very happy with our purchase.”

Later in the day, the agent also struck for another son of Wootton Bassett (lot 153) from Haras de la Louviere at €310,000. The colt is a grandson of dual Group winner TOP TOSS.

Son of Siyouni for M.V. Magnier

Several buyers were in attendance around the ring for a son of Siyouni out of Listed winner MODERN EAGLE (lot 67) from Ecurie des Monceaux. The hammer finally fell at €420,000 in favour of Laurent Benoit (Broadhurst Agency) and M.V Magnier for the half-brother to multiple Listed placed MASTERPIECE from the excellent family of Prix Saint-Alary (Gr.1) heroine MOONLIGHT DANCE.

After signing the docket, the agent said, “He’s a son of Siyouni out of a mare by Montjeu. For me he was the best colt in the sale. We knew we would have to fight for him as he was very popular. We’ve bought him for a partnership for Coolmore. We don’t yet know where he’ll go into training.”
