Blowout Breaks Through In Distaff Turf Mile
Blowout | Susie Raisher
Having gone painfully close to earning a graded-stakes victory on a half-dozen occasions, Peter Brant’s BLOWOUT (GB) (m, 5, Dansili {GB}–Beauty Parlour {GB}, by Deep Impact {Jpn}) audaciously opened a long lead through the middle stages of Saturday’s GII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile and when they came to her at the midstretch marker, she had a bit more in the locker and kept on doggedly for the victory. Allowed to race loose up front through fractions of :24.28 and :48.39, Blowout built up about an eight-length bulge as the field hit the three-eighths pole. They began to zero in on her nearing the entrance to the final furlong, but Flavien Prat had reserved enough for a final-quarter sprint that was clocked in :23.31 and was home first. New York Girl (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and Zofelle (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) rounded out the minor awards. A two-time listed winner as a 3-year-old, Blowout made just three trips to the races last year, finishing second by a neck in the GIII Noble Damsel S. in September and by a nose with Prat up in the GI Matriarch S. when last seen Nov. 29. Sales history: €450,000 Wlg ’16 GOFNOV. Lifetime Record: 12-4-7-1. O-Peter Brant; B-Dayton Investments Ltd; T-Chad Brown.
Dawn Approach’s Poetic Flare Prevails In Guineas Thriller

Eight years on from the G1 2000 Guineas success of Dawn Approach (Ire), Jim Bolger’s Poetic Flare (Ire) emulated his sire with a resolute win in the QIPCO-sponsored Newmarket Classic on Saturday. Always near enough to the furious tempo set by Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the 16-1 shot was joined by Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) as they stayed on past that pacemaker a furlong from home. Headed and seemingly held, the homebred who took the Apr. 11 Listed 2000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown dug deep for Kevin Manning to win it on the bobber by a short head, with Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) just a neck away in third as the low-drawn horses dominated.
