Sackatoga Stable’s favored Tiz the Law surged to the front turning for home and then drew clear to take the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) for 3-year-olds March 28 at a Gulfstream Park facility that was closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The victory earned the son of Constitution trained by Barclay Tagg 100 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby point series. But instead of pointing to a race five weeks away, he, and everyone else in the field of nine will have to wait about five months for the Run for the Roses switched to Sept. 5.
Shivaree was second at 80-1 followed by Ete Indien and Gouverneur Morris. The second through fourth finishers received 40-20-10 qualifying points, respectively.
Ridden by Manny Franco, Tiz the Law covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 while winning for the fourth time in five starts.
The Florida Derby has accounted for 24 winners of the Kentucky Derby, a figure higher than any other prep race.
