LNJ Foxwoods’s Covfefe (Into Mischief–Antics, by Unbridled), who last month was named champion 3-year-old filly and champion female sprinter at the Eclipse Awards, has been retired from racing and will be bred to boom sire Constitution for the upcoming breeding season. She will reside at Gainesway Farm.

Bred in Kentucky by Alexander-Groves Thoroughbreds, Covfefe was a $250,000 purchase out of the 2017 Keeneland September yearling sale by Alex Solis II and Jason Litt of Solis/Litt Bloodstock on behalf of Larry, Nanci and Jaime Roth of LNJ Foxwoods. Turned over to trainer Brad Cox, Covfefe graduated by 9 1/4 lengths at first asking and would go on to win five of her six starts during her sophomore season in 2019.

The 8 1/2-length winner of the GIII Miss Preakness S. in a track record-setting time of 1:07.70 (video), the bay bounced back from a narrow defeat in the Roxelana S. in June with a hard-fought success in the GI Longines Test S. at Saratoga Aug. 3, outslugging GI Kentucky Oaks victress and fellow Eclipse finalist Serengeti Empress (Alternation), with three-time Grade I winner Bellafina (Quality Road) back in third (video). Covfefe prepped for the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint with an eight-length score over next-out Grade II winner Bell’s The One (Majesticperfection) in the Sept. 21 Dogwood S. in Louisville and spotted Bellafina a home-court advantage on Breeders’ Cup weekend, but held sway by 3/4 of a length to cement her championships (see below). She retires with a record of 8-6-0-1 and earnings of $1,110,025.

Covfefe is the epitome of why one gets into the game and did everything we could ask for as a racehorse. As LNJ Foxwoods is primarily a breeding operation, my family has now chosen to focus on the next stage of her career. She has given us some of the most incredible moments of our lives and we look forward to campaigning her offspring in the near future.”

Added Cox: “I feel privileged to have trained a dual champion. She has been brilliant since day one. Her entire campaign enamored me, but the performance that stands out was her Miss Preakness. Covfefe broke the Pimlico track record by over a second, running in 1:07.70. We are sad to see her go, but glad she is retiring 100% sound. I support the Roths’ decision entirely and look forward to having the opportunity to train her progeny.”

A 3/4-sister to Albiano (Harlan’s Holiday), a two-time group winner and twice Group 1-placed in Japan; and to the French stakes-placed and stakes-producing Going Day (Daylami {Ire}), Covfefe is out of an unraced daughter of SW & GSP Aurora (Danzig), the dam of Grade I winners Arch (Kris S.) and Acoma (Empire Maker); UAE champion Festival of Light (A.P. Indy), MSW Alisios (Kris S.); Aztec Pearl (A.P. Indy), the dam of Grade III winner Aztec Sense (Street Sense); and the dams of MGSW Campaign (Curlin) and MSW Tea Time (Pulpit).
