Continuing was has become sort of a family tradition, Enforceable became the fourth graded stakes winner produced by his dam when stylishly taking the $200,000 Lecomte (G3) at Fair Grounds on Saturday night.

The John Oxley-owned gray also earned 10 qualifying points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby series prep, increasing his total to 13 after previously running third in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) and fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) last fall.

Under Julien Leparoux, Enforceable settled in 11th place early in the field of 13, made a wide rally into contention on the far turn, and then a six-wide bid for the lead, which he grabbed well before the eighth pole. The son of Tapit powered to a 1 1/2-length victory at odds of 6-1., paying $15.60 to win.

“On the backside he was just dragging me,” said Leparoux. “He’s a horse I think the more distance the better.”

Silver State finished second by a neck over Mr. Monomoy, with Finnick the Fierce fourth. They earned Derby points of 4-2-1, respectively, with Finnick the Fierce increasing his total to five after running second in the Kentucky Jockey Club. The order of finish was rounded out by 3-1 favorite Scabbard, Shashashakemeup, Excession, Halo Again, Bango, Perfect Star, Jack the Umpire, Sycamore Run, and New Eagle.

Out of multiple Grade 2 winner Justwhistledixie, by Dixie Union, Enforceable is a half-brother to 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner New Year’s Day. He’s a full brother to multiple Grade 2 scorer Mohaymen, who ran fourth in the 2016 Kentucky Derby, and Grade 3 turf winner Kingly.

“He trained beautifully down here. He’s starting to fill out and mature,” said David Carroll, assistant to trainer Mark Casse, who confirmed the nine-furlong Risen Star (G2) and 1 3/16-mile Louisiana Derby (G2) later in the Fair Grounds meet were likely targets as Enforceable continues on his road to Louisville.

Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms, Enforceable has compiled a record of 7-2-1-2, $267,150.

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah has gotten off to a fantastic start at stud, with his first crop propelling him to the top of the 2019 freshman sire earnings list.

The 2015 Horse of the Year sent out 27 winners, and his progeny collectively amassed more than $2.7 million in 2019 according to the Blood-Horse statistics (or in excess of $2.8 million if you use the Thoroughbred Daily News tabulation). Not only was that bankroll the best of any first-crop sire in North America and Europe, but American Pharoah also finished second on the list of all sires with 2-year-old runners. The established Into Mischief, who reigned as North America’s overall champion sire of 2019, was the only one with higher 2-year-old progeny earnings.

American Pharoah’s winners included high-quality performers, chief among them Four Wheel Drive, hero of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2), Futurity (G3), and Rosie’s S. in course-record time at Colonial Downs.

Three others won stakes, also on turf. Maven, a stablemate of Four Wheel Drive from the Wesley Ward barn, ventured to France to capture last summer’s Prix du Bois (G3) and become their sire’s first stakes winner. Another Miracle, winner of the Skidmore S. at Saratoga, was third to Four Wheel Drive in the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Sweet Melania dominated the Jessamine (G2) at Keeneland on her way to a third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), ensuring that all of the American Pharoah progeny hit the board on “Future Stars Friday.”

Aside from the four stakes scorers, American Pharoah was responsible for seven who placed in stakes last term including a pair at the top level. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Monarch of Egypt , his sire’s first winner, went on to finish second in both the Railway (G2) and Phoenix (G1) in Ireland. American Theorem was runner-up in the American Pharoah (G1) at Santa Anita , but like his sire, had a setback that ruled him out of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).

Skygaze appeared to give “Pharoah” his fifth stakes winner in the Mazarine (G3) on Woodbine’s Tapeta, but she was disqualified for interference and placed third. Homeland came close in another respect, missing by a head in the grassy Central Park at Aqueduct.

Sharp Belmont debut winner Princesa Caroline, half-sister to turf champ Lady Eli, rallied for third in the Jimmy Durante (G3) at Del Mar. Envied was third in the Happy Ticket at Louisiana Downs, and Godolphin’s British-based Saqqara King placed in a pair of listed stakes in France.
