NIJINSKY INFLUENCE BURNS BRIGHT FIFTY YEARS ON

We always begin a new year full of optimism for the months to come. Within racing, we all hope to be lucky enough to see another superstar, generally focusing on the horse who has just established himself as the champion 2-year-old. In 2020 we are naturally all anticipating the Classic campaign of Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal). Will he delight or disappoint? Only time will tell; but, however well he does, he will be hard-pressed to emulate the achievements of the colt on whom racing fans were pinning their hopes 50 years ago. Nijinsky (Northern Dancer) had ended 1969 as the unbeaten champion 2-year-old, but the best was still to come.
Nijinsky’s Triple Crown campaign of 1970 remains the stuff of legend, and the mighty bay horse still ranks as one of the most notable sires of the modern era. A member of the second crop of the 1964 Kentucky Derby, Preakness S. and Queen’s Plate winner Northern Dancer (Nearctic), Nijinsky could well have done his racing in America but for the genius of Vincent O’Brien. Dispatched by Charles Engelhard to Windfields Farm in Ontario to inspect E. P. Taylor’s yearlings, O’Brien reported that one stood out: a colt by the totally unproven sire Northern Dancer from the 1962 Queen’s Plate and Canadian Oaks heroine Flaming Page (Bull Page).

Nel segno di Mister Guida e di Sun Devil si concretizza l’ultimo convegno dell’anno di galoppo all’Ippodromo del Mediterraneo, che ha regalato prove ricche e interessanti. Terzo successo consecutivo per un magnifico Mister Guida che nel Criterium d’Inverno 2019, che ha riservato ai giovanissimi 2000 metri della pista piccola, si erge a migliore cavallo di due anni. Diretto magistralmente dal solito Giuseppe Cannarella, vince in duello Dreamerfilly, respinta a un passo dal traguardo. Torna sul podio di una bellissima condizionata Rockey Racoon che si assicura la terza moneta, cancellando l’ultima opaca prestazione. Non poteva sperare in un debutto siciliano migliore Sun Devil, che si adatta perfettamente agli onerosi 2100 metri del Memorial Gaetano Francicanava, ipotecando un successo pesante in un Handicap Principale per cavalli di tre anni e oltre. Fiducioso alla vigilia Federico Bossa, alla guida di un Sun Devil che attacca e passa Desire To Fire e si lancia sul traguardo. Fa benissimo Jllary che serra il podio. Tris Quartè Quintè abbinata al Premio Miss Griss, ha chiuso il convegno di Santo Stefano.
Ritorno al successo per Common Black, per il doppio di Bossa, nonostante la perizia. Giungono vicinissimi sul traguardo Diloal, che sfrutta invece peso agevole e anticipa Complimentor sul podio. Una piazza, al termine dei previsti 1400 metri della pista piccola, anche appannaggio di Nonno Aurelio e Sambuco che chiudono il quintè.
