In a renewal of the G1 Darley July Cup dominated by the 3-year-olds, TDN Risings Star Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (No Nay Never) led his group all the way up the centre under a determined Ryan Moore to inflict a heavy defeat on the 3-1 favourite Advertise (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), with Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in third.

King Power Racing’s Mystery Power (Ire)(No Nay Never) entered Saturday’s G2 bet365 Superlative S. at Newmarket as one of the darker types despite the obvious promise of his Haydock debut win, but emerged the other side of a strong renewal with genuine 2000 Guineas pretensions. Tickled at by the punters at 7-1, the bay who beat the subsequent wide-margin winner Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) at the Merseyside venue June 22 was the picture of professionalism racing without cover close to the pace set by Godolphin’s 9-4 favourite King’s Command (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Committed by Oisin Murphy approaching the two-furlong pole, he was chased to the line by Juan Elcano (GB) (Frankel {GB}) but held him at bay to score by a length, with 3 1/4 lengths back to Maxi Boy (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who was representing the Coventry form. “He’s a super little horse and I was happy to get a tow and keep it simple,” Murphy said. “He’s tough and and hit the line very strongly, so hopefully he’ll get a mile in time but he doesn’t need to at the moment.”
Interestingly, it was the Mark Johnston runner Subjectivist who had succumbed to Juan Elcano on debut also at Haydock earlier last month before advertising the prowess of his two conquerors when winning by seven lengths at Chelmsford last week. Mystery Power was probably better served by these quick conditions than Juan Elcano, but it is clear that both were clear-best here. Maxi Boy had been beaten 3 3/4 lengths by Arizona (Ire) (No Nay Never) in Royal Ascot’s G2 Coventry S. June 18, where Ropey Guest (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) was just 2 1/2 lengths in arrears, so this form looks rock-solid.
“He is a lovely colt and it didn’t surprise us when he won first time out, but we have taken our time with him,” Hannon said. “Getting racing from a long way out would have probably helped him a bit. He won well and is a proper horse. Seven furlongs is clearly no problem for him, but a mile is what he will want. I seem to have a lot of seven-furlong two-year-olds as opposed to the fast fireballs. We have some lovely juveniles and they are coming along nicely. We will now have to look at races like the [G2] Vintage [at Goodwood July 30] and the [G1] Dewhurst [at Newmarket Oct. 12].”
Kevin Ryan said of Juan Elcano, “The ground was no problem, he just ran a little bit green into the dip and he got a little unbalanced and Andrea [Atzeni] just had to wait for him to find his stride again. The winner had gone, but he has finished out the race really well. He is a lovely horse for the future. There are no immediate plans. I will speak to the owner then make a plan.”
Mystery Power, whose stable also have the Coventry runner-up and TDN Rising Star Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), is a half-brother to the 2017 G3 Prix Miesque runner-up Seaella (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) whose dam Gems (GB) (Haafhd {GB}) won over 13 furlongs at a moderate level. She is a half-sister to the dual listed-winning and multiple group-placed middle-distance performer Frank Sonata (GB) (Opening Verse) and the Listed Sweet Solera S. and G3 Prix du Calvados third Peaceful Paradise (GB) (Turtle Island {Ire}). Gems, who is also connected to the sire Alhijaz (GB) (Midyan) and the G2 Princess of Wales’s and G2 Hardwicke S. winner Beauchamp Hero (GB) (Midyan), has a yearling colt by Australia (GB) who was sold to Glenvale Stud for €56,000 at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Frankel’s Veracious Takes the Falmouth

Equalling the pre-war record of six successes in the Falmouth S. set by the “Wizard of Manton” Alec Taylor, Jr., the “Wizard of Newmarket” Sir Michael Stoute conjured something special from TDN Rising Star Veracious (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Friday’s Tattersalls-sponsored group 1 prize. Slow to come to herself this term, Cheveley Park Stud’s homebred was too free in front when fourth last time in the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. at the Royal meeting and was initially kept away from the remainder by Oisin Murphy in front. Having to battle late as One Master (GB)(Fastnet Rock {Aus}) arrived on the scene, the 6-1 shot proved equal to the task and hit the line with a neck to spare, with the heavily-backed I Can Fly (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) 2 3/4 lengths away in third. “Things didn’t really go to plan at Ascot, but they have done a fantastic job at home with her,” Murphy said of the winner, another to set a track record on a day of them. “She was a little bit fresh going to post, but thankfully the first two furlongs were smooth and chilled. That’s due to all the hard work put in at home. She’s small, but she rides quite strong and obviously takes racing well.”
Stoute’s first winner of this race came in 1983 via the eventual Breeders’ Cup Mile scorer Royal Heroine (Ire) (Lypheor {GB}) when it was a group 3 race known as the Child S. The high-class dual winner Sonic Lady (Nureyev) was next up in 1986 and 1987, while the other pair came in these silks in 1998 and 2014 courtesy of Lovers Knot (GB) (Groom Dancer) and Integral (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}). Stoute’s ability to build this operation’s fillies into top-level performers is uncanny, but Veracious looked like one that could be heading in the wrong direction during the early part of the season.
Only fourth when the 5-4 favourite for the nine-furlong G2 Dahlia S. on the Rowley Mile May 5, last year’s G3 Atalanta S. winner and G1 Coronation S. and G1 Nassau S. third had two in front racing under a penalty in Epsom’s G3 Princess Elizabeth S. over an extended mile June 1. Over-racing in the Duke of Cambridge, Veracious was in danger of doing too much again here but Murphy’s manoeuvre towards the stand’s rail seemed to settle her perfectly. From an early point, the rest were playing catch-up and that Frankel stride was always going to make it a thankless task for the pursuers.
“It was a very brave performance and Oisin rode her beautifully,” Stoute said. “She ran very well at Ascot, but was doing a little too much and we didn’t want that to happen today. We wanted to let her flow. She has taken a long time to ripen, but Ryan [Moore] rode her in work 10 days ago and said ‘she is there now’. We have a lot of choices and she has got form at mile and a quarter from the Nassau last year. We don’t have to decide that today and we will take our time. Cheveley Park have been wonderful supporters and I’m always thrilled to win a good race for them.”
James Doyle said of One Master, who looked to stay the mile well, “She is so brave and I travelled into the race well, but she tightened up a bit when I got after her and she didn’t appear to let down on me.” Trainer William Haggas added, “She is very game, but she doesn’t like fast ground. Her best trip is seven furlongs, but there are not any seven-furlong group 1 races until the [Oct. 6 G1] Prix de la Foret, so I don’t know where she’ll run. We will work backwards from that.” Aidan O’Brien said of I Can Fly, “It was a very good run. There are no plans, but we will see how she is. There are no excuses.”
Veracious is a half-sister to the dual G2 Summer Mile winner and G1 Queen Anne S., G1 Juddmonte International S. and GI Woodbine Mile-placed Mutakayyef (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), and to the G3 Prix de Flore scorer Intimation (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). The dam Infallible (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who captured the G3 Nell Gwyn S. and was runner-up in this race and the G1 Coronation S., is out of the listed-winning and group-placed sprinter Irresistible (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), who also produced Infallible’s listed-class full-brothers Remarkable (GB) and Watchable (GB).
Irresistible’s unraced daughter Penchant (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) was responsible for the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and G2 Lennox S. hero Garswood (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) and Zagitova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was third in last year’s G2 Debutante S. Infallible’s 3-year-old colt Sea Wings (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was fifth on his debut here last month, while she also has the unraced 2-year-old colt Galata Bridge (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) and a yearling full-brother to Veracious.

Following in the steps of the former Mark Johnston luminary Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}), Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum’s Raffle Prize (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}) was able to defy a penalty for her G2 Queen Mary success in Friday’s G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket. On the front end from the outset, the 9-2 shot never looked like being reeled in by the 5-4 favourite Daahyeh (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and gave generously for Frankie Dettori to win by 1 3/4 lengths, with TDN Rising Star Final Song (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) a head back in third. “She’s very smart–I can’t believe she won over five,” Dettori said of the winner, who remarkably set a new all-age track record in the process. “She saw out the six very well and has improved. It was an amazing performance and she’s got lots of scope.”
Runner-up to the June 21 G3 Albany S. winner Daahyeh on debut over this trip on the Rowley Mile course May 18, Raffle Prize secured a scintillating five-length success also over six at Chester a week later before outlasting Kimari (Munnings) over five in the June 19 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. This was another outstanding effort–faster than any July Cup run in history–and marks her as the leading 2-year-old filly so far seen in 2018. The G1 Prix Morny is her target at Deauville Aug. 18 and it will be all the better for her inclusion.
“Stepping up to six was a little bit of a question mark and obviously the second horse beat her before first time out and was the talk of the town,” trainer Mark Johnston said. “Our filly showed fantastic speed that day and got tired. She had every right to have come on from that. We couldn’t expect to turn the tables, but hoped to and she clearly looks better over the six. Frankie said go for the Lowther or the Morny. That will be up to the owner, but she has won two group twos and I think we have got to have a shot at the group one next.”
Trainer Roger Varian said of Daahyeh, “We are always disappointed when they don’t win, but she ran a good race. Full credit to the winner, as she has probably improved since we beat her in May. We could never quite make up the ground, but I thought David [Egan] gave her a good ride. The fillies in front of her didn’t quite take us to the winner, so we have had to go wide into the middle of the track and she could never make up the ground. She finished off well and shaped as though she might get a furlong further. I don’t think she has harmed her reputation and she remains an exciting prospect.” Saeed bin Suroor said of the third, who was filling the same spot as in the Queen Mary, “Final Song has run another excellent race and was beaten by two very good fillies. We have no immediate plans and will give her a break before bringing her back for some of the nice group races later in the season.”
Raffle Prize is out of Summer Fete (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who took the seven-furlong G3 Oak Tree S. and Listed Radley S. and was third in the G2 Celebration Mile. The second dam Tamarillo (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) is a half-sister to the listed-placed pair Take It To The Max (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and Wake Up Call (GB) (Noverre). Interestingly, the latter is the dam of Godolphin’s Zaman (GB) by Slade Power’s sire Dutch Art who took the Listed Meydan Classic over a mile, was second in the G2 Vintage S. and comfortably stayed a mile and a quarter. This family also features the GII San Clemente H. winner Up In Time (GB) (Noverre), the Listed Atalanta S. scorer and G1 Sun Chariot S. third Musicanna (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and her G2 Godolphin Mile-winning son One Man Band (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), and the high-class sprinter Overdose (GB) (Starborough {GB}).
