05/01/2019. MOSHAHER’S MONSTROUS DEBUT TOPS CARNIVAL-WORTHY NIGHT OF ‘RACING AT MEYDAN’ // Eclipse Award Finalists Announced // KOREA : Seoul & Busan Sunday: Race-By-Race Preview (January 6)

Meydan Racecourse hosted its seventh meeting of the 2018-19 season

DUBAI (January 5, 2019)—Racing at Meydan on Saturday officially featured The District One Magnificent Stretch, a 1600m turf handicap, but the main event was upstaged from the outset when H And B’s Moshaher decimated a group of 3-year-old maidens with UAE Derby dreams in the opener. The 1600m (one mile) affair, titled the District One Panorama Win, saw the Doug Watson-trained son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents track the leaders like a seasoned older horse before toying with his foes in the straight. Kept lightly to task, he finished up the race in 1:40.81, while finishing 6¼ lengths clear of the well-bred duo of Lacienegaboulevard and Raayan.

An $87,000 OBS April 2-year-old purchase and out of a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Fleet Renee, Moshaher will now move on to the rich Dubai World Cup Carnival 3-year-old stakes program that culminates with the world’s richest dirt derby, the $2.5 million UAE Derby (G2). It was a second debut winner for the ‘Classic’ generation for the owner after their Al Seel Legacy’s made a victorious start to his career a fortnight ago.

“We were very hopeful coming into the race, because his work at home has been exceptional, but you just never know if they will reproduce that,” Watson said. “He did not trial as he arrived a bit late, but we did work him out of the gates and he did everything right. We think he is a nice horse, so it is nice to see him win like that first time out. Hopefully, there is more to come with the (Group 3, $250,000) UAE 2000 Guineas (on Feb. 7) his next race.”

In the previously scheduled feature, Musabbeh Al Mheiri-trained Azmaam proved simply too good for his rivals, wearing down Ajwad in the final furlong to win by a measured 1½ lengths. Jim Crowley was riding for his main employer, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Crowley said: “That was actually the first time I have ridden him, but the trainer was pretty confident and he is a horse who tends to finish his races strongly, so I was happy to take my time. He was not the best away and I had to hassle him a bit early on, but after that he has carried me there nicely before quickening well.”

Surely one of the gamest horses trained locally, Heraldic, ideally drawn in stall three, was never headed in the 2200m dirt handicap, the District One Landmark Award, responding to the urgings of Richard Mullen to hold off Hucklebuck, who tried valiantly to get past throughout the duration of the straight. Fresh off

Mullen said: “This horse is just so genuine and does not want to be passed, as he showed last time, and again today. That was another very gutsy effort and he is a credit to Satish and the whole team.”

Owners, trainer and jockey doubled up with arguably the easiest winner of the night, Bochart, who was sent straight to the front by Mullen in a 1400m dirt handicap, the District One Elegance Stretch Cup, and had the race won from the moment they shot clear early in the straight. A course and distance winner in November, in similar fashion, the 6-year-old Dubawi gelding carried top weight of 62 kg and appears to be a possible Carnival player.

Mullen said: “That was a career-best from him and that was always the plan, to go forward and give him a breather, then go for home. When I asked him, he quickened nicely. It would be nice to get him into the Carnival.”

Out of luck with Hucklebuck, trainer Ahmad bin Harmash was soon celebrating victory with the well-deserved success of Rua Augusta in the following 1600m turf maiden, the District One World Class Run. A 4-year-old gelded son of Arch, he was running for the 12th time in the UAE and 15th overall. With several good efforts in defeat on his resume, including finishing third in last year’s Al Bastakiya (Listed) on Super Saturday, he battled on strongly to deny Paleolithic; asserting clearly that this is his preferred surface.

Bentley, riding his first winner of the UAE season on just his second mount, said: “He has really stuck his head out and seemed to appreciate being back on the turf, as he probably does not relish the kickback on the dirt surfaces. There are not many spare rides around this season with so many good jockeys here, but hopefully I will pick up more mounts.”

Caught close home on his previous two outings, when third over 1600m and second over 1200m, both at Meydan, Pirate’s Cove was never headed in the 1200m dirt handicap—the District One Picturesque Run—to gain a popular victory for trainer Sandeep Jadhav and owner Hamad Rashed bin Ghadayer. Reunited with Mickael Barzalona, aboard for the only previous local victory registered by the 6-year-old gelded son of Dubawi, over the same course and distance last January, he was able to track across from his middle draw to get the rail and the lead. Stalked by Alraased, he was kicked clear by Barzalona about 250m out, after which they never appeared likely to be caught.

Jadhav said: “He has been so unlucky the last twice when only caught close home, so he deserved that and I am delighted for him and his owner. Full credit to Mickael, who is a world-class jockey and has given him the perfect ride from the front.”

The finale, the District One Crystal Lagoon Trophy, a 2000m turf handicap, Barzalona and mount Rio Tigre roared home a determined winner over Crowley and Mudaarab. The winner is owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and trained by Jadhav—providing doubles for the jockey-trainer combination. It was the son of Teofilo’s third win of the UAE 2018-19 season.

Eclipse Award Finalists Announced

Saturday, January 5, 2019

Justify | Coady photography

Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky), Triple Crown hero and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Justify (Scat Daddy) and the exceptional 3-year-old filly Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) will battle it out for hotly contested and much-debated Horse of the Year honors as the finalists for the 2018 Eclipse Awards in 12 equine and 5 human categories were revealed Saturday morning.

Accelerate, whose owner Hronis Racing was among the three finalists in that particular division, won six of his seven outings in 2018, including a wide-trip success in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.

Justify’s rise to glory in 2018 was nothing short of sensational, going from a February maiden score to become the second Bob Baffert-trainer runner in four years to win the Triple Crown, albeit in the remarkable space of less than four months.

But for a somewhat questionable disqualification in the GI Cotillion S., Monomoy Girl would have amassed a perfect record in 2018, with marquee victories in the GI Kentucky Oaks, the GI Acorn S. and GI CCA Oaks ahead of a brave success in the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff. All three are also well-positioned to be named unanimous champions in their individual divisions.

KOREA : Seoul & Busan Sunday: Race-By-Race Preview (January 6)

by gyongmaman

There are 12 Sunday races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 and 5 at Busan from 13:45 to 17:05. Here is the race-by-race for Seoul (Busan selections below):

RH7_8728

Race 1: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(11) RAON SERENA is yet to win in five attempts but has never been worse than 3rd. She overcame a heavy bump at the start last time and still ran a good 2nd, beating a couple of these in the process and today can be her day in this filly/mare maiden. (10) HOMECOMING has had a similarly good start to her career with a pair of runner-up finishes and a 3rd place and she looks to be the main danger. (8) EOMJI YEOWANG has finished 4th behind Raon Serena in both her latest two outings and while she will need to improve to overturn that, she looks good for a potential place here. (7) ROMAN BLADE seemingly lost her way a little last autumn but should be better here for an eight-week break. (4) QUEEN FORCE ONE and (6) DASANUI CHODAE others to look out for.

Selections (11) Raon Serena (10) Homecoming (8) Eomji Yeowang (4) Queen Force One
Next Best 7, 6, 3
Fast Start 4, 6, 7, 10

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Time for (3) MAMMA ROMA to win. Luigi Riccardi’s filly has improved across three starts so far culminating in 3rd place last time and today can sit just behind the early speed and finish strongly in this maiden which is restricted to three-year-old fillies. The other top contenders are the ones likely to be on that early speed. (1) BLACK WINGWING ran reasonably well for 3rd on debut at the beginning of November and can improve while (2) NEW PARADIGM has had six weeks off since a solid effort at 1300M. Biggest danger though may be (4) WONDERFUL MARIA. Both her starts so far have been at 1300M with a 5th and a 2nd. She’s drawn well today to get that early lead and could go all the way. (11) SSOARAUTS, an improved 2nd at the distance a month ago, looks best of the rest.

Selections (3) Mamma Roma (4) Wonderful Maria (2) New Paradigm (1) Black Wingwing
Next Best 11, 6
Fast Start 1, 2, 4

Race 3: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(1) DAE UNHA remains a maiden after eight attempts but has been consistently close and it would be no surprise if he to make the breakthrough here. He likes the distance, has drawn well, and can win. The big danger is (4) BEST EVER. A winner on debut in October, he ran a good 2nd (behind a shock winner) four weeks ago, overcoming a poor start, and looks to have more in him. (3) SKY MARINE can get a pass on her latest effort in tricky company and should go much better today. (6) DIA PUNCH and (10) MISS PYEONGCHON are others who may be considered for places, the latter likely to try to lead early.

Selections (1) Dae Unha (4) Best Ever (3) Sky Marine (6) Dia Punch
Next Best 10, 2
Fast Start 5, 10

Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Only eight runners here and (3) MYEONGJIN MAN is the one the rest will need to beat. His solitary win came at this distance last July and after a couple of shaky attempts at this level, he ran well for 3rd last time despite getting a huge bump at the start. He’ll sit behind an early pace set by main rivals (4) INDY LADY and (7) STAR LIST. Indy Lady is up in class having won by three-lengths over 1300M on December 1st, while Star List remains a maiden but recent form reads well, and this company should suit. (5) NAEGA KKEUTPANWANG and (6) SPECIAL LIGHT are others with claims on at least a place.

Selections (3) Myeongjin Man (4) Indy Lady (7) Star List (6) Special Light
Next Best 5, 8
Fast Start 4, 7, 8

Race 5: Class 4 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(7) THE QUEEN GRACE has run a good 2nd in both her latest starts, both at this distance. She’ll be looking for a fast start here under David Breux and if she gets it, she’ll be hard to beat. (2) GIVEN WEEKEND is up in class after winning two of his last three. The most recent was a seven-length score at the distance on December 1st in a fast time and he’ll surely be competitive at this level too. (11) TOHAMSAN POWER comes up in class too and drops back in trip after a very good 2nd over 1300M last time. (1) GEOSEN MAPUNG and (4) JEJUI BARAM are others in the hunt.

Selections (7) The Queen Grace (2) Given Weekend (11) Tohamsan Power (1) Geosen Mapung
Next Best 4, 10
Fast Start 1, 4, 7, 8

Race 6: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(4) WONDERFUL TRUTH is two for two and is up in class as she seeks her hattrick. She should complete it too with her four-length win over this distance on November 11thsuggesting there is much more to come. She hasn’t raced since then but should be on Read more of this post
