Vase unlucky for some but not for Exultant as Purton pounces in opener
There was an inauspicious start for the European contenders at Sunday’s Hong Kong International Races as local runner Exultant pounced under champion jockey Zac Purton to score by a neck from Japanese contender Lys Gracieux at Sha Tin.
Eziyra finished best of the Team Europe horses two and a half lengths third under Christophe Lemaire – the Aga Khan’s four-year-old filly would prove the only European-trained horse to place all day.
The win was a first in the race for former Hong Kong champion trainer Tony Cruz, who has now won the full set of Hong Kong International races, becoming only the second trainer to do so.
“This season he’s been much better, much stronger – and Zac gave him a perfect ride,” said Cruz. “He hasn’t really got any speed at all, but over a mile and a half we had a chance to put him up front [and set the pace], so we went and did it that way.”
Lys Gracieux loomed large a furlong out, but Purton and Exultant doubled down to power on and win by a nose.
“I thought at that point Joao [Moreira, on Lys Graceiux] had the better of me, he had the momentum,” said Purton. “When he got to me he rolled into me a little, but that actually fired my horse up.”
On Eziyra, Lemaire said: “She had a dream run behind the winner and she has plenty of stamina – she just lacked an instant reaction but kept on galloping and fought all the way to the line.”
Arc fourth Waldgeist, who started favourite, was next best of the European contingent, finishing fifth under Pierre-Charles Boudot. The Andre Fabre-trained colt made rapid progress in the closing stages, having survived a collision with the Ed Dunlop-trained Red Verdon turning up the home straight when moving in for a gap.
Dunlop said of Red Verdon, who finished 13th of 14: “He was knocked over by Waldgeist just as he was challenging. He was almost down on his knees, and that was that.”
Beauty Generation puts in a performance for the ages with back-to-back victories
Breathtaking, awe-inspiring, brilliant. That’s not hyperbole when describing Beauty Generation’s Hong Kong Mile demolition job – in fact, it may not even do him justice.
It may not have been the result the British wanted, but what a result for racing as John Moore’s stable star – not an easy title to earn – put in a flawless performance to win back-to-back renewals of the race by three lengths under a hands and heels ride from Zac Purton.
It was an ice cool performance from the jockey who, unfazed by his draw in stall 12, took his time out wide in the early stages before easing his way to the front. From then on the eventual result never looked in doubt.
“That’s what we all hoped we would see today,” said Purton of the 1-2 favourite. “I’m just happy for the horse that’s he’s come out on the big stage and showed everyone how brutally good he can be.
“His high cruising speed is his best attribute, he’s very comfortable rolling along at that speed and then he can still kick off it. For the horses at the back of the field they’re already struggling to keep up with the pace, then they’ve got to try to reel him back in. It’s not an easy thing to do.”
Moore, a seven-time champion trainer in Hong Kong, seemed as awestruck as the crowd at what his horse had achieved.
“That’s the most impressive [performance] I’ve seen so far,” said Moore, adding that Beauty Generation had even surpassed the achievements of his champion miler Able Friend. “Taken on on the inside, he had to do it the hard way as far as I’m concerned, but once he hit the front and those high RPMs, away he went.”
Racing fans keen for another glimpse of Beauty Generation may need to start booking flights, with Moore nominating the Dubai Turf in March as a first potential international foray.
Japanese mare Vivlos was best of the rest under William Buick, just pipping local runner Southern Legend by a neck for second.

- Il Longines Hong Kong Sprint (Group 1) (3yo+) (Course A) (Turf) G1 sui 1200 metri in pista dritta e l’equivalente di £1 milione al primo, è stato vinto dal locale Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) per F C Lor, trainer che ne ha rilevato la formazione da John Size, e questa è l’unica variante per un cavallo cresciuto e pasciuto ad Hong Kong.

- Nel Longines Hong Kong Mile (Group 1) (3yo+) (Course A) (Turf) G1 sul miglio e l’equivalente di £1,3 milioni al primo, prestazione monstre da parte di Beauty Generation (Ready To Rock), allenato da John Moore e montato da Zac Purton, che ha onorato al massimo il suo ruolo di favorito a mezzo. - La Longines Hong Kong Cup (Group 1) (3yo+) (Course A) (Turf) G1 sui 2000 metri, con £1,5 milioni di dotazione di Sha Tin, ha visto la vittoria andata ancora una volta dei locali che hanno messo sul gradino più alto del podio Glorious Forever (Archipenko), altro che aveva iniziato la carriera in Europa, che ha risolto con Silvestre De Sousa in sella nei confronti di Deirdree (Harbinger) e Time Warp (Archipenko), fratello pieno del vincitore, altra curiosità, allenato da F C Lor. Lo ha fatto in pista stravolgendo i pronostici con arrivi strabilianti nelle 9 corse in programma, lo ha fatto sul palco con le note della Fanfara del XII Reggimento Carabinieri Sicilia diretta dal maestro Paolo Mario Sena, con la straordinaria voce della soprano Elisabeth Vidal e del Baritono Cognet, con i ritmi del gruppo d musicisti e ballerini tunisini, con l’eleganza e il portamento dei cavalli lipizzani del CREA trainanti due raffinate carrozze, con la sicilianità soavemente cantata dal soprano Manuela Infalletta. Desire to Fire ha spodestato gli anziani e si è eretto ad attore principale del Gran Premio Francesco Faraci, Hp “A”, che ha impegnato qualitativi cavalli di 3 anni ed oltre sui selettivi 2300 metri della pista grande. Non poteva esserci debutto migliore, sul tracciato siciliano, per la new entry di Marcello Restuccia che, con in sella Giuseppe Gentilesca, ha attaccato e passato il buon Cortese e l’ha arginato al posto d’onore. È solo terzo il battistrada Cuore del Graco, che si conferma sul podio. Tra i giovanissimi al confronto nel Criterium dell’Immacolata, Hp “B” sui 1500 pista grande emerge il pesino di Juamento. In sella un ispiratissimo Gabriele Cannarella che la spunta su un’ottima Miss Concy e un progredito Coach Me Softly. Tornano al successo Kylach Me If U Can e Antonino Cannella, protagonisti del Gran Premio Unire, HP “C”, abbinato alla TQQ, che ha ingaggiato 14 anziani sui 1700 metri di pista grande. Bene Lord Schekin e Guapo che si assicurano la seconda e la terza moneta, mentre i due del team di Giusy Guida Clockwinder e So You Zen vanno a concludere la quartè e la quintè. Si replicherà con lo spettacolo domani, domenica 9 dicembre, quando i protagonisti del trotto di stanza al Mediterraneo si confronteranno su 7 corse tra cui il GP Città di Siracusa e la tappa finale del Campionato Guidatori dell’Unione Ippica del Mediterraneo.
