(fonte : ippodromimilano.it)
KOREA : Cheongdam Dokki Bounces Back To Retain KRA Cup Classicby gyongmaman |
Cheongdam Dokki successfully defended his KRA Cup Classic crown at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday afternoon, taking victory on the 2000M Korean Group 2 event by two-and-a-half lengths and taking the first steps to putting defeat in the Billion Won Korea Cup International race last month firmly behind him.
Dolkong was a morning scratching, the Korea Cup runner-up having injured the frog of his hoof in a gallop this week. Although close to making the race, discretion proved the better part of valour and he was withdrawn as a precaution with the future in mind but that still left a high-quality field for Chongdam Dokki to defeat if he was to bounce back from the humbling he received when trying to match Japan’s London Town for pace in the Cup.
Defeat them he did. Sent off at long odds-on, Cheongdam Dokki led from the gate under jockey Lim Gi-won, who was restored to the mount, and looked a winner every step of the way. Triple Nine, racing for the first time since finishing 3rd behind him in the Busan Mayor’s Cup three months ago, hit his top gear late to come home 2nd while three-year-old US import Munhak Chief (by Pioneerof The Nile) scored a very promising 3rd.
Champion mare Silver Wolf came home 4th but there was no luck for two-time SBS Sports Sprint winner Doraonpogyeongseon, who ended up 6th of the 8 on his first try at 2000M.

Group 1 Number Five For Siyouni’s Laurens

Laurens rolls to her fifth Group 1 win | racingfotos.com

Whereas the arguably superior Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) has been and gone, John Dance’s Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) is still churning out wins at the highest level and there was a fifth to celebrate in that category as the increasingly-formidable bay made virtually all in Saturday’s G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket. Kept close company throughout by last year’s G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the 11-4 favourite who had prevailed in another battle in Leopardstown’s G1 Matron S. Sept. 15 was the last off the bridle with jockey Danny Tudhope still motionless heading towards the “dip”. What looked a foregone conclusion there was ultimately far from the case, as Laurens needed the line with that Ballydoyle trainee pressing her all the way. Giving her all as per the norm, the Northern princess was a head to the good at the finish, with Altyn Orda (Ire) (Kyllachy {GB}) 2 1/4 lengths further back in third. “She was a bit fresh today and I was just a passenger for the first half of the race,” Tudhope explained. “I was trying to hang on to her as much as I could, but they weren’t going quick enough at the start and so I sent her on and she never relaxed. She kept changing her legs and I could never get into a rhythm. She has some stride on her–I didn’t want to break that and so I let her enjoy herself. The line came just in time, it wasn’t easy but we got there. I think she was always doing a bit too much, but she’s very tough and when the second horse came she battled. She was more relaxed going round a bend at Leopardstown, but she’s very straightforward and such a nice ride. A super filly.”
The finishing scenes were reminiscent of those in evidence as she grimly held on to a fast-diminishing nose margin from another of Ballydoyle’s fillies in September (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Fillies’ Mile over this course and distance last October. That followed a second to the Wertheimer star Polydream (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the seven-furlong G3 Prix du Calvados at Deauville in August and a first black-type success in Doncaster’s G2 May Hill S. tackling this trip for the first time. Second in the G1 1000 Guineas back here May 6, the bay was successfully upped to 10 furlongs when edging out George Strawbridge’s subsequent G1 Prix Rothschild heroine With You (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp May 27 and again proved toughest in the 10 1/2-furlong G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly June 17. Her sole disappointment came when her stamina was stretched too far and she wound up sixth in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks Aug. 23, but her gallant Matron performance proved that her enthusiasm was undimmed.
What was notable in this latest showing was the way she was able to shell off smart rivals one by one while still within her comfort zone. Only Happily was able to withstand the harsh treatment dolled out by the winner’s superior stride pattern and stay in the hunt as she posted her finest effort since last autumn. Laurens cracked all else, including the briefly threatening TDN Rising Star Veracious (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and trainer Karl Burke was not ruling out attempting to gain further acclaim before the end of the year. “She’s a superb filly and deserves her status,” he said. “Hopefully, she’ll get the praise she deserves now. John [Dance] is happy to supplement for the [Oct. 20 G1] QEII if that’s what we want to do and I think we’ll stick at a mile now. She’s also in the Breeders’ Cup as well, but the main thing is to get her home and see how she comes out of this.”
The last known foal out of Recambe (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who is kin to the Hong Kong Derby victor Salford Mill (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), Laurens descends from Raysiya (Ire) (Cure the Blues) whose best performer was the listed scorer Raysiza (Ire) (Alzao). She is herself the third dam of the G1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Kinnaird (Ire) (Dr. Devious {Ire}) who in turn produced the G2 Royal Lodge S. scorer Berkshire (Ire) (Mount Nelson {GB}). She also features as the second dam of the G2 July S. hero and G1 Middle Park S. runner-up Ivawood (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}), who was also third in the G1 English and Irish 2000 Guineas. This is also the family of the G3 Killavullan S. scorer and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up Rayeni (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and another Prix de l’Opera heroine in Ridasiyna (Fr) (Motivator {GB}).

Dubawi’s Turgenev a New Rising Star At Newmarket
2nd at NMT, Novice, 10000 | British EBF Crown At Stowupland Novice S. | (8f) | Winner: Turgenev (GB), c, 2 by Dubawi (Ire) |
Turgenev | Racing Post
By Tom Frary
Blessed with an industrious nature, a willing attitude and a fair amount of class, Princess Haya of Jordan’s Turgenev (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was able to turn back some bluebloods and defy a six-pound penalty to earn TDN Rising Star status in Saturday’s British EBF Crown At Stowupland Novice S. over a mile at Newmarket. Runner-up to Godolphin’s G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere contender Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) on debut over seven furlongs at Doncaster Sept. 14, the first foal out of Godolphin’s triple group-winning stalwart Tasaday (Nayef) was off the mark with a minimum of effort on Newcastle’s Tapeta 10 days later. Out again just 12 days after that, the 10-11 favourite travelled with enthusiasm behind the leading trio and after tanking his way to the head of affairs with 2 1/2 furlongs remaining stretched away from Ballydoyle’s Il Paradiso (Galileo {Ire}), who had caught the eye last month at Gowran. At the line, Turgenev was heavily eased to record a 1 1/2-length success, with Il Paradiso in turn six lengths clear of the winner’s unraced stablemate Franz Kafka (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in third.
“He did it well and has improved a lot from his first two races,” trainer John Gosden said. “We took him to Newcastle because the straight mile there is very fair and it’s a good surface. It takes a little bit of getting and the races are usually truly-run. He’s given six pounds here and done it in good style–Aidan’s horse was second and wouldn’t have been here just for the air and the third horse is one we like as well. Turgenev is in the [Oct. 27 G1] Futurity [at Doncaster] and we’ll see how he is in the next ten days and decide, as these two-year-olds can change at this time of year.”
Tasaday, who began her career with Andre Fabre, captured the G2 Prix de la Nonette and was second in the G1 Prix de l’Opera and third in the G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Yorkshire Oaks. She is a daughter of Tashelka (Fr) (Mujahid), who also took the Nonette when it was a group 3 and the G3 Prix Fille de l’Air. She is also the dam of the G3 Desmond S. scorer Tribal Beat (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}). She also has a colt foal by Sea the Stars (Ire).
TURGENEV (GB) (c, 2, Dubawi {Ire}–Tasaday {Hwt. Older Mare-UAE at 9 1/2-11f, SW & G1SP-Eng, MGSW & MG1SP-Fr, SW-UAE, $817,731}, by Nayef) Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, £13,109. Video, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
