Imperious Enable sweeps Crystal Ocean aside for winning return
Last season’s spectacular Arc heroine Enable returned in style from an 11-month absence to leave King George runner-up Crystal Ocean in her wake and earn a quote of 9-4 to defend her crown at Longchamp on October 7.
Enable, a five-time Group 1 winner last year, looked well up for it in the preliminaries and was full of it on the way to post, but that did not put off punters who backed her in to 8-15 (from 8-11) minutes before the off.
After the morning absence of pacemaker and stablemate Weekender, Frankie Dettori took the initiative on the Khalid Abdullah-owned four-year-old, who showed the way at a decent clip to Crystal Ocean in the early stages.
Turning for home, he pushed the button at the two-furlong pole and surged clear of Sir Michael Stoute’s colt to score cosily by three and a half lengths without resorting to the whip.
Trainer John Gosden said: “I was confident Enable would do that today as she’s high class. That was a nice race for both horses if you’re having a prep for an Arc and it was good to see Enable back, as it’s been a long wait.
“She’ll come on for that as she was only 80 per cent fit – 85 at a stretch – but she’s in a good place mentally and she’s enjoyed it. It’s been very frustrating for her, as it has for us, especially when she’s seen the other horses going out on the Heath “
Gosden said of the second, who was giving Enable 8lb: “I thought David Probert showed a lot of class by not leaning on her early, and fair play to him.”
Dettori was also impressed: “That was awesome. I wasn’t sure how fit she was as she’s only being going a mile at home, but then she’s trained by a master trainer. She got the job done and felt as good as ever. Bring on the Arc!”
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to the winning owner, said: “We came here wanting a good comeback and we got one.
“If it had turned into a ding dong battle with Crystal Ocean and she lost she would still have gone to the Arc, but to see her return like that was very pleasing. It’s great that after 11 months out she came here and still knows what it’s all about.”
Probert, who was riding Crystal Ocean for the first time, said: “I was happy enough down the back, but with the 5lb penalty it was hard to serve it up to Enable properly in the straight.”
He added: “He handled the surface well and if Sir Michael wants to take him to the Arc he’s run a nice prep, make no mistake.”

Khalid Abdullah’s Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) was itching for a return to action having spent the entire season in the shadows and she exhibited all her customary exuberance as she put Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) firmly in his place in Kempton’s G3 188Bet September S. on Saturday. Sent off the 8-15 favourite, last year’s G1 English, Irish and Yorkshire Oaks and G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine enjoyed an easy lead under Frankie Dettori with Crystal Ocean sat no more than two lengths adrift. As she went up through the gears in the straight, the G2 Hardwicke S. winner and G1 King George runner-up could not match her and at the line she had stretched the margin to 3 1/2 lengths. She is back on her “A game” as she is Arc-bound now and trainer John Gosden was understandably delighted. “She found a beautiful rhythm and it was a lovely trial back for the big one in four weeks’ time tomorrow,” he said. “I couldn’t have been more happy with her going into the race and with how she is now. She was 80-85% and so it will bring her on. She handles any ground and we’ll point firmly towards the Arc. It is all down to her, she gets frustrated not training and racing and is very strong. The hardest thing for her is to have to stand around doing nothing. Some like that, but she’s not one of them.” The runner-up’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute said, “There is nothing that can beat that filly on those terms,” he said regarding the eight pounds that Crystal Ocean was giving the Juddmonte ace. “There are lots of options for him, the Arc, the Champion Stakes, the Canadian International and the Breeders’ Cup.”
Juddmonte’s outstanding Enable will be emulating the comparable Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) if she repeats her Chantilly antics without the weight-for-age advantage in the Oct. 7 feature. The portents are strong that she will achieve it, as her family have traditionally thrived with age and experience with her relative Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}) being the prime example. Twice runner-up in the Arc, he captured two editions of the GI Sword Dancer Invitational with the latter being as a 6-year-old. The dam, the Listed Prix Charles Laffitte winner and G3 Prix de Flore runner-up Concentric (GB) (Sadler’s Wells), is a full-sister to the G2 Prix de Royallieu scorer and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine (GB) who aside from producing Flintshire is also the second dam of last year’s GII Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup scorer Projected (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). Concentric’s 3-year-old colt Centroid (GB) (Dansili {GB}) is now a winner for Dermot Weld, while her 2-year-old filly Entitle (GB) also by Dansili was sixth on her sole start for this stable in June. She also has an as-yet unnamed yearling filly by Frankel (GB) and a 2018 colt by Sea the Stars (Ire).

The Tin Man makes it third time lucky as Oisin Murphy works wonders
Oisin Murphy worked his magic on The Tin Man, who won the 32Red-sponsored Group 1 sprint at the third time of asking and gave his rider another success at the top level in his amazing season.
Trainer James Fanshawe had turned to Murphy to replace Tom Queally, who had ridden the six-year-old to his previous eight career wins including last year’s British Champions Sprint at Ascot.
But Murphy had not sat on the top-class sprinter prior to the race, which was run at a furious pace despite the heavy ground.
Last year’s winner Harry Angel, who broke cleanly from the stalls, led the early charge with Hey Jonesy but both were spent forces before the final furlong.
The Tin Man scythed through the field down the middle of the track and consigned Brando to yet another second in a Group 1 after his July Cup effort with Gustav Klimt third nearest the stands’ rail.
Murphy said: “It was my first go on The Tin Man – he is very laid back and a very easy ride. I didn’t travel great early but they went very fast. He really picked up for pressure and I got there sooner than I wanted in the end.”
Paddy Power reacted by making The Tin Man 3-1 favourite to repeat his win in the British Champions Sprint on Ocotber 20.

The subject of a jockey change in mid-week, The Tin Man (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) came in for the Oisin Murphy treatment and duly produced some magic to come out on top in a rain-affected G1 32Red Sprint Cup at Haydock. Staying on into third in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest over 6 1/2 furlongs at Deauville last time Aug. 5, the 7-1 shot had more in front than behind early as Hey Jonesy (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) refused to give the free-running defending champion Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) a moment’s peace on the front end. Slicing between rivals in his inimitable style, The Tin Man struck the front approaching the furlong pole and held off Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Gustav Klimt (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by a half length and a neck. “I’m absolutely thrilled, as he’s run some great races without winning this year,” trainer James Fanshawe said of the 6-year-old who was recording a third success at this level after the 2016 G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint S. and last year’s G1 Diamond Jubilee S. under the substituted Tom Queally. “I was worried about the ground, but I always had it in the back of my mind that the rest of the family loved it. He’s been a great servant and hats off to him.” Murphy, who was registering a fifth group 1 win since early July, added, “He’s very laid-back and an easy ride. No horse enjoys this kind of ground, but he’s by Equiano and they usually do. The team have done a wonderful job with the horse and I was just lucky enough to ride him today. He didn’t travel and I got him going a bit sooner than ideal in hindsight, but he won anyway.” The returning 6-4 favourite Harry Angel was again upset in the stalls and faded out of contention to be sixth, with jockey Adam Kirby blaming the testing ground for the disappointment.
