Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith’s Nelson (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) enjoyed a profitable juvenile campaign, backing up an Aug. 17 breakthrough score going one mile at this track in his third start with victory in the Sept. 9 G3 Golden Fleece S. over that trip here once more. The bay closed last term with a neck second to subsequent G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) in the Sept. 30 G2 Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket and carried a three-pound impost for his juvenile highlight in this seasonal return. Sent to the fore after the initial strides and enjoying a comfortable lead until turning for home, he was shaken up inside the two pole and kept on resolutely under continued rousting in the closing stages to withstand the persistent attention of stable companion Delano Roosevelt (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) and double his black-type tally. Delano Roosevelt had lowered Nelson’s colours when the pair met in their July 27 debuts over one mile at this track, the former earning a ‘TDN Rising Star’ tag for that effort. Fellow ‘TDN Rising Star’ and G1 Racing Post Trophy third The Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was the first of four runners off the bridle, but nonetheless kept on to complete a Ballydoyle trifecta.
“Nelson handles soft ground and we had to have something make the running,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien. “He had gone forward in his races before and won around here making the running. He’ll come back here next month for the [G3] Derrinstown [Stud Derby Trial] and that’s what they’ll probably all do. Donnacha [O’Brien] was delighted with the horse and said he stays well.”
The Ballydoyle conditioner was satisfied with the performances his other two runners and added, “Seamus [Heffernan] was very happy with Delano Roosevelt and said he just got a little bit lonely when he got there. Ryan [Moore] was very happy with The Pentagon. He wants real nice ground and will come on a ton. It was great because you need to get the racing miles into them.”
Pedigree Notes…
Nelson is one of five stakes winners for G1 Irish Oaks heroine and G1 Epsom Oaks second Moonstone (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), headed by G3 Chester Vase victor and G1 Epsom Derby runner-up US Army Ranger (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Munster Oaks victress Words (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Moonstone, who has also produced a yearling colt by Galileo (Ire), is herself kin to a slew of black-type performers including stakes-winning MG1SP Irish highweight L’Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) and G1 Prix Saint-Alary victress Cerulean Sky (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), who in turn is the dam of G1 St Leger third and G2 Doncaster Cup-winning sire Honolulu (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Who’s Steph (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) bettered a Sept. 9 debut ninth over this course and distance with a breakthrough score upped to one mile at Naas in her only other prior start Oct. 4, and she took a giant leap forward with a game win in this black-type bow and sophomore return. The grey broke well to race in a handy third initially and bounded to the front before halfway. Last off the bridle in the straight, she ran on powerfully under a final-furlong drive to turn down all challenges and register a career high. “She did that well and went through the [heavy] ground,” said trainer Ger Lyons. “If it was good ground we wouldn’t have run her because she wants every bit of a mile. You’d have to be impressed with her and her temperament is to die for. She does everything I want at home and I’m impressed with her. We’ll go home, sit down and make a plan, but we don’t have big early closing entries with her. I’m not a traveller and I love staying at home, so we’ll find something for her here [in Ireland] and there will be no firm in the going description. There’s every chance she could come back here [for the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial] next month, but if a good offer comes in she’ll be sold because she’s a filly. This is the first batch of fillies we’ve ever bought. The horses are well, I’m delighted with them and the ways things are going. The only negative is that I didn’t have the balls to put her in the [G1 Irish 1000] Guineas. The second closing was the other day and I told the lads we’ll leave it and not be silly.”
Who’s Steph is one of two scorers and the leading performer for Llew Law (GB) (Verglas {Ire}), and she is a half-sister to the gelded dual winner Thunder Crash (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who is one year her senior, and a 2-year-old colt by Rock of Gibraltar (Ire). Llew Law is a half-sister to stakes-winning G3 Molecomb S. third Hototo (GB) (Sleeping Indian {GB}), out of Listed Prix de Thiberville placegetter Harlem Dancer (GB) (Dr Devious {Ire}), and the winner’s fourth dam is G1SW French champion juvenile filly Hippodamia (Hail to Reason).

Bypassing a potential partnership with last term’s G1 Middle Park S. and G1 Dewhurst S. hero U S Navy Flag (War Front), Ryan Moore’s decision to instead partner G2 Superlative S. victor Gustav Klimt paid a handsome dividend here as the former pounced late to seal a decisive win in his first start since annexing that July 15 career high. Steadied last of the four runners as stablemate and G3 Killavullan S. winner Kenya tanked along on the front end, he was uncoiled in the straight to go second entering the final furlong as Imaging took over in front and was ridden out to inhale that rival nearing the line, winning with plenty in hand. “The [heavy] ground was far from ideal, but it was nice to get a run into him–as it’s a long time since he ran–and we’re very happy,” said Aidan O’Brien. “Ryan [Moore] was very impressed with the way he quickened in that ground. He’s a real good-ground horse and Newmarket [for the May 5 G1 2000 Guineas] is the plan if everything is well.” Reflecting on the last-of-four finish of leading juvenile U S Navy Flag, the trainer added, “We knew US Navy Flag would hate the ground, but he needed to get out. He might go to the [2000] Guineas and he’ll grow another leg between now and then.”
Gustav Klimt is one of five black-type performers produced by Listed Empress S. winner and G2 Prix Robert Papin runner-up Massarra (GB) (Danehill), and he is kin to G1 Gran Criterium-winning Italian highweight Nayarra (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), G3 Silver Flash S. victress Wonderfully (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Listed Naas Sprint S. scorer Cuff (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 St James’s Palace S. third Mars (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Massarra is herself a sibling of G1SW sire Invincible Spirit (Ire) (Green Desert), out of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha (GB) (Kris {GB}), and she has also produced the 2-year-old filly Fire Fly (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Galileo (Ire).

Korea: Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (April 15)by gyongmaman |
Sunday sees an 11-race card at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 and a 6-race card at Busan from 12:40 to 17:05:
Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
Three debut-makers among the ten who go here and one of them stands-out. That’s (2) NAE GIRUI BIT, a Raconteur gelding, who went through a couple of trials in March, making all in the latest of them. That was impressive enough to suggest that if he runs anything like it in this modest contest, he could win. Fellow first-timer (6) RISING SOCKS trialled well too and should be in the hunt although the biggest danger is likely to be (3) TIAGO TOUCH. While indifferent on debut over 1200M in December, he returned at the end of February to run a much improved 2nd at this trip and must be taken seriously here. He’s certainly the best of those with prior race experience although (1) SEUNGNI LIKE and (8) DAEJI GONGJU may improve.
Selections | (2) Nae Girui Bit (3) Tiago Touch (6) Rising Socks (1) Seungni Like |
Next Best | 8, 9 |
Fast Start | 2, 3, 4, 10 |
Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million
(6) NAEGA KKEUTPANWANG has been close in each of his latest four with two 3rds and two 4ths, all of them at this distance. He’s drawn well to get on speed early here and can win. Luigi Riccardi’s (9) DUAL CHOEGANG enters in promising form too. He beat a couple of these on his way to a useful 4th last time out and can get closer here. One of those two in that race three weeks ago was (1) CHOWON YEOJEONSA back in 5th. Just like Dual Choegang, she remains a maiden after thirteen attempts but has enough about her to beat plenty here. She’s not a fast starter but can pick off horses late on. (2) RAON PRO SENSE and (7) WHITE PUNCH are others to take into account.
Selections | (6) Naega Kkeutpanwang (9) Dual Choegang (1) Chowon Yeojeonsa (7) White Punch |
Next Best | 3, 10 |
Fast Start | 2, 6, 10, 122 |
Race 3: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
(1) BEST CHAPEL secured her maiden win at the third time of asking with a front-running performance at this distance on March 3rd. She’s up in class today but has little to fear and can make it two in a row in this all filly/mare contest. (6) SEOUL STORY and (9) NEUNGRYEOK SIDAE join her up in class following maiden wins of their own and while the pair of them perhaps have a little more to find, both can be competitive. Of those with prior experience at this level, (4) KWAEHAN YEBONGSAN is the biggest danger. She was a decent 5th last time at this distance and is likely to join Best Chapel in competing for the early lead. She has every chance. (10) LEAD UP also comes in with encouraging recent form and is another one with good gate speed.
Selections | (1) Best Chapel (4) Kwaehan Yebongsan (6) Seoul Story (9) Neungryeok Sidae |
Next Best | 10, 5 |
Fast Start | 1, 4, 6, 10 |
Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
(10) SUPER FLY returned from a nine-month layoff to run a good 3rd over class and distance on March 10th, beating a couple of these in the process. He should have come on for that run and if he has, he’s take some beating. (9) THE FINAL finds herself up in class after beginning her career with three consecutive 3rd place finishes. While the level may be different, the strength of the opposition is nothing to fear and she can be competitive. (5) SPECIAL LIGHT ran 5th behind Super Fly last time and while he has plenty to make up on the favourite, he should be beating plenty of the others. (11) HAETSAL WANGJA and (12) JAJINMORI both enter off encouraging latest runs and can come into consideration.
Selections | (10) Super Fly (5) Special Light (9) The Final (11) Haetsal Wangja |
Next Best | 12, 1 |
Fast Start | 8, 10, 12 |
Race 5: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
Jimmy Creed colt (4) SPEED JOY was a very encouraging 2nd on debut at 1000M back in January running on nicely. He’s had plenty of time off since and should appreciate the additional distance that he has to play with here. (9) GEUMA FALCON gave out similarly positive signs on his first start last month and looks to have an excellent chance of Read more of this post
