Tiger Roll holds off Pleasant Company to give Russell an emotional success
There is something about Tiger Roll and unorthodox fences. Gordon Elliott’s Cheltenham Cross-Country Chase star just held on to deny the enthusiastic Pleasant Company to win the Randox Health Grand National for Gordon Elliott and Davy Russell.
Tiger Roll, the smallest horse in the field and who has recorded three victories at the Cheltenham Festival in his fantastic career, travelled like a superstar throughout the race and cleared away from the Willie Mullins-trained runner-up after the last, only to almost come to a stop at the line.
However, after the result went to a photograph, he was judged to have held on to provide Russell with an emotional success.
Russell, who was lost for words when interviewed after the race, said: “I was afraid he wouldn’t take to the fences as he’s very economical with his jumping and, once again, Keith Donoghue has done a marvellous job with this horse.
“What can I say. I’ve won this race a thousand times in my head, in my dreams as a child, and I’m just thinking of my kids at home now that I’m taking part in this wonderful event that I love so much.
“It’s just amazing to have finally done it. Credit to Gordon and his team, the owners and everybody at home.”
Russell went on to dedicate the success to Irish Flat jockey Pat Smullen, who is currently being treated for a tumour. He added: “This one is for Pat Smullen. I was speaking to him the other morning – he’s as tough as nails. This one is for Pat.”
Not only did Elliott train the winner, but he also saddled the third home Bless The Wings, who was one of Irish five runners to finish in the first six home.
He said: “It’s unbelievable. I can’t believe it. Tiger Roll is the stable favourite. It’s brilliant for the yard and the owners Gigginstown.”
Anibale Fly took fourth sport with Milansbar and Bryony Frost finishing best of the home contingent in fifth. Another Gigginstown runner, Road To Riches, was back in sixth.
Paddy Power introduced Tiger Roll at 33-1 to follow up his success in Aintree’s showpiece in 2019.
