It was the at the 2016 Goffs Sportsman Sale where China-based businessmen Yuesheng Zhang picked up a smart yearling filly by Casamento for €3,000. Earlier this year, at the prestigious Goffs London Sale, Whitefountainfairy was sold to King Power Racing for £300,000.
On Saturday evening as part of the Association of Irish Racehorse Owners Awards, Mr Zhang collected the award for Best Value Purchase At The Sales in association with Goffs. There in person to pick up the award, which was presented by Goffs Chairman, Eimear Mulhern, Mr Zhang commented: “I am very thankful for this award and for all the support I have been given especially from Goffs, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, BBA Ireland and all the Irish companies and individuals who have helped develop Yulong and the thoroughbred industry in mainland China.”
The China based businessmen is over in Ireland to support next week’s Horses in Training Sale and Open Yearling Sale which takes place from Tuesday 24 October through to Thursday 26 October, with guidance from Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland.
Donohoe added: “It is great to see Mr Zhang recognised by the Irish Owners Association and Goffs with this award. When he first came over to Ireland, we picked up about 40 yearlings from across the Sportsman and Horses in Training Sales and had been lucky to have plenty of success with a number of them.
He is over here this week to support the sales again and the plan will be to assess each individual after purchase before deciding whether they remain in training here in Ireland or if they are shipped to China in due course .”
Recent successes for the prominent racehorse owner includes an impressive win by Yulong Gold Fairy at Naas last Sunday for trainer Dermot Weld. The bay filly by Mount Nelson was purchased last year at the Sportsman’s Yearling Sale for €8,000 and looked the part last weekend when winning by eight lengths.

“Mr Zhang’s support of Goffs and Irish Bloodstock in recent years has been enormous, and the industry is in his debt. I was delighted to visit his Yulong Racecourse earlier this year and was very impressed with the entire set-up as well as the very high standards he has ensured in every area. The horses looked magnificent and the racing was exciting and competitive, whilst I was made to feel extremely welcome“.
Mr Zhang, owner of Yulong Racecourse in the Shanxi province on mainland China is also currently developing a sales complex with state-of-the-art stables and facilities being shipped from Ireland.
Goffs one-day Horses-In-Training Sale starts on Tuesday 24 October and will be immediately followed by the two-day Open Yearling Sale on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 October. |

Easing ever closer once passing halfway, the well-backed 9-4 favourite made continued headway off the home turn to seize control approaching the final furlong and ran on well thereafter to easily account for Alghabrah (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) by an impressive 1 3/4 lengths. “She just could be very good and it takes a good filly to win from stall 18,” enthused trainer Dermot Weld. “She is a lovely, big staying filly, she has a lot of class and also has plenty of pace. Obviously, that’s it for the year and we’ll review everything in the spring. She is a beautiful filly to look forward to and wouldn’t have any problem on any ground.” The homebred bay is the third scorer produced by G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Proportional (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}) and she is kin to Listed Finale S. victress Variable (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a colt foal by Frankel.
