Magic Lily headlines Dubai Future Champions Festival day one contenders
Highly promising two-year-olds Magic Lily, Sound And Silence and Expressiy feature among seven Godolphin runners on day one of the Dubai Future Champions Festival at Newmarket, UK, on Friday, October 13.
The three juveniles are trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick. Magic Lily has been supplemented for the G1 Fillies’ Mile following a comprehensive eight-length victory over the same course and distance on her September 23 debut.
The New Approach filly, drawn 12, faces 11 rivals including the first three from the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes – Happily, Magical and September.
Charlie Appleby commented: “Magic Lily was impressive over this course and distance on her debut and came out of that race well.
“We had been toying with the idea of supplementing her and decided to let her take her chance after she worked on Saturday.
“She is a filly for next year but won’t look out of place in this field and we are confident that she will run a nice race.”
Sound And Silence goes for a second straight G3 success in the opening five-furlong Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes after storming to a decisive win over a furlong further in the Prix Eclipse at Maisons-Laffitte, France, on September 20.
The Exceed And Excel colt, who will exit from stall eight, has to give weight all round to his 11 opponents.
Expressiy, who lines up in the G3 Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp Stakes over seven furlongs, disappointed over a mile in the G3 Prix d’Aumale at Chantilly, France, on September 3, but bounced back to form with a clear-cut success in a seven-furlong Polytrack novice race at Chelmsford City on October 5. The filly is drawn eight of the 14 runners.
Charlie Appleby added: “Sound And Silence has run consistently well all season and his last performance on soft ground at Maisons-Laffitte was another step up compared to his previous form.
“We are coming back to five furlongs on a sounder surface, but he has ticked both of those boxes before when winning the Windsor Castle Stakes and Roses Stakes.
“Expressiy went to France and found the experience a little bit too much, too soon for her. She didn’t see out the mile that day, but won nicely over seven furlongs last time out.”
Godolphin is also represented in the day’s main race for older horses as Dutch Connection (Charlie Hills/James Doyle) aims for a second G2 victory over seven furlongs in the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards Challenge Stakes.
The five-year-old horse captured the G2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood in 2016 and drops back down a furlong after coming home a creditable sixth in the G1 Woodbine Mile at Woodbine, Canada, on September 16.
Charlie Hills commented: “Dutch Connection had to miss the Prix de la Foret earlier this month due to soft ground, but I couldn’t be more pleased with him at home.
“He would have his best chance on quicker going and I am hoping that the weather stays dry.”
First Nation (Charlie Appleby/James Doyle) lines up in the Old Rowley Cup, having run consistently well in major handicaps throughout this season, including when filling the runner-up spot behind Atty Persse in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot in June.
He is joined in the 12-furlong heritage handicap by High End (Saeed bin Suroor/Jim Crowley), who won his first three starts before going down by half a length when second in a Yarmouth handicap over an extended 11 furlongs on September 19.
Charlie Appleby declared: “First Nation has been consistent all season. He is one of those horses that deserves to win a decent handicap like this as he always runs a very solid race.
“He is in good order and should be bang there again.”
Saeed bin Suroor said: “High End has been working nicely and looks in good condition. He is a progressive horse and is ready to go again.”
Winter Lightning (Saeed bin Suroor/Oisin Murphy), a half-sister to dual G1 winner Thunder Snow, makes her debut in a seven-furlong maiden for two-year-old fillies on the same card.

O’Brien Closing in on Frankel’s Magic 25 Top-Level Wins
Aidan O’Brien has the potential to tie the record of 25 wins in one year over the weekend
Champion trainer is two wins shy of Hall of Famer’s mark for top-level victories.
O’Brien has the top three choices in a field of 12 for the Oct. 13 bet365 Fillies Mile (G1). The trio is led by Happily, a Galileo filly out of the Storm Cat mare You’resothrilling, who comes to the Newmarket tilt fresh from a convincing triumph over colts in the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1) at Chantilly Oct. 1 at the same distance.
She contributed another group 1 win to O’Brien’s tally before that, in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh Sept. 10 and overall has four wins from six starts.
Happily’s margin of victory in the Moyglare Stud was only a short head over stablemate Magical and Magical returns to try again in the Fillies Mile. Magical’s Oct. 1 trip across the Channel resulted in a fourth-place finish in the Total Prix Marcel Boussac (G1). She also is by Galileo, from the Pivotal mare Halfway To Heaven.
O’Brien’s third chance in the Fillies Mile is September (JPN), by the Japanese-bred Deep Impact, a son of Sunday Silence, out of the Danehill mare Peeping Fawn. September will try to improve on a third-place finish in the Moyglare Stud Stakes.
Ryan Moore, who has ridden all three, has the mount on Happily with Donnacha O’Brien up on Magical and Seamie Heffernan engaged for September.
None of the other nine fillies has a group 1 win to her credit.
Should the Fillies Mile go his way, the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes (G1) Oct. 14 at Newmarket would give O’Brien a chance to tie Frankel’s mark, set in 2003. That might require an upset, however, as the antepost favorite is Expert Eye, an Acclamation colt trained by Sir Michael Stoute for Juddmonte Farms. Expert Eye is 2-for-2, impressively.
Pending final confirmations, O’Brien’s best chance would seem to be U S Navy Flag, a War Front colt who upset the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (G1) Sept. 30 at Newmarket going six furlongs. U S Navy Flag, out of the Galileo mare Misty For Me, is a full brother to Roly Poly, who provided O’Brien’s 23rd group 1 of the year Oct. 7 in the Sun Chariot Stakes (G1).
After the Sun Chariot win, O’Brien acknowledged surpassing Frankel’s record “would be incredible for everybody.” But, he quickly added, “The horse always comes first. That’s the important thing. The horse always comes first.
“After every race, the lads (the Coolmore partners) sit down and have a chat among themselves and see what race they want to pick. They have a big discussion with the people around them, make a target and we go with that. It’s race-to-race, horse to horse. The horse always comes first and we’re doing our best in every race. It’s all we can do.”
If all he can do is not enough at Newmarket, there’s still the British Champions card Oct. 21 at Ascot with four group 1 events up for grabs. And O’Brien is expected to have a significant presence at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Nov. 3-4 at Del Mar.

Siamo all’11 Ottobre ed è esattamente il terzo giorno del Book 2 di Tattersalls del quale parleremo dettagliatamente nelle prossime ore. La notizia però di rilevante interesse per noi italiani e che ci riempie di orgoglio riguarda il top price del Book 2 realizzato dal Lot 1063 figlio di Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) e Biz Bar (Tobougg), presentato dall’Allevamento Le.Gi. di Massimo Parri ed acquistato da Shadwell per la cifra autorevole di £850,000! Sebbene in altre occasioni ci sono stati top price italiani a Tattersalls, questo è un vero e proprio record per un cavallo venduto ed ad una cifra così alta per la seconda sessione delle Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, da sempre rinomata come nonplusultra della qualità per un puledro da acquistare.
A produrre l’offerta è stato Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum in persona, di concerto con Angus Gold quale braccio destro alle aste, che ha risolto la lotta a colpi di bid, dopo averlo visionato molto negli ultimi giorni prima dell’asta come da foto diffusa dalla pagina ufficiale dell’Allevamento Le.Gi..
Per la famiglia Parri si tratta di una grandissima soddisfazione, così come per mamma Biz Bar che ha prodotto prima di questo maschio nato il 26 Aprile, anche i campioni Biz The Nurse (Oratorio), vincitore del Derby Italiano G2 e del Premio Milano G1, poi Biz Heart (Roderic O’Connor) vincitore di Gran Criterium G2 e venduto ad Hong Kong, Biz Power (Power) vincitore di Listed e piazzato di G3 e venduto ad Hong Kong.
Poi ancora Cospirator (Ivan Denisovich) vincitore di tantissime corse, specializzato della distanza, Misterious Boy (Arcano) vincitore di Premio Guido Berardelli G3 da imbattuto e venduto ad Hong Kong e Biz Honor (Dawn Approach), vincitore intanto di una maiden.

Intanto vi diciamo che la prima giornata del Book 2 in programma lunedì ha prodotto questi risultati: 271 in catalogo, 251 offerti, 214 venduti (l’85%) con un movimento globale di £16,563,000 (+31%), con la media a £77,397 (+23%) ed il mediano a £60,000 (+20%).
Il secondo giorno ha visto 267 cavalli in catalogo, di cui 240 effettivamente offerti con 203 acquisti (l’85%) ed un movimento complessivo di £15,197,000 (+15%), con la media a £74,862 (+12%) ed il mediano a £60,000 (+20%).
Il terzo giorno lo analizzeremo appena avremo dati definitivi, ma intanto il top price sembra ben saldo nelle mani del Sea The Stars e Biz Bar. Questo è un giorno storico, ad ogni modo. Complimenti.
Milano: Grave infortunio per Val Nanda, una delle migliori velociste italiane. Si prega per la sopravvivenza
L’Italia soffre paurosamente per mancanza di attori protagonisti, se poi ci si mette anche la sfiga vuol dire proprio che abbiamo fatto qualcosa di male al dio dell’ippica.
La notizia che serpeggia nelle ultime ore e di cui abbiamo avuto riscontro è stato l’infortunio molto grave occorso martedì mattina a Val Nanda (Fast Company), una delle migliori velociste italiane in circolazione, che stava preparando la sua stagione della consacrazione a certi livelli.
La 3 anni di Daniele Leoni ha infatti patito una grave frattura dopo un lavoro mattutino, mentre stava rifinendo la condizione in vista di obiettivi italiani e stranieri. L’infortunio, per quanto siamo riusciti a carpire anche per una questione di delicatezza e sensibilità nei confronti di chi la cura ogni giorno, è grave e riguarda il sesamoide ma siamo ancora in attesa di capire la diagnosi completa. Per ora non ancora da ritenere fatale, nel senso che si sta facendo di tutto per salvarle la vita dopo pronta ingessatura e cure del caso post trauma.
Il problema più serio infatti, dopo infortuni di questo genere, è la ricaduta da infezioni post operazione ma anche in questo caso siamo in attesa di capire l’entità dell’infortunio e le percentuali di sopravvivenza. In sintesi sarà impossibile rivederla in pista, speriamo bene per lei stessa, per chi l’ha sempre considerata come un pezzo della famiglia, e poi che si riesca a preservarne la genetica in razza.
Sta di fatto che l’Italia perde il potenziale di una cavalla che aveva fatto stropicciare gli occhi in occasione del suo rientro stagionale a San Siro, nel Premio Camillo Dubini sui 1000, dove la cavalla di Cristiana Signorelli ha fatto un vero e proprio canter finendo in 58 spaccati senza mai essere sollecitata pur non essendo al top della condizione ed al rientro dal secondo posto nel Prix Hampton Lr a Maisons-Laffitte in Giugno. Figlia di Fast Company (Danehill Dancer) e Krystal Xenia (Xaar), era stata pagata solamente €10,500 alle Goffs irlandesi di Novembre pescata dalla New Racing Factory di Gianluca Di Castelnuovo. A 2 anni ha vinto il Perrone Lr a Capannelle, quest’anno si era distinta con un terzo posto nel Certosa Lr ma soprattutto con quel secondo posto in Francia con linee di tutto rispetto. In generale ha corso 9 volte vincendo in 5 occasioni e piazzandosi in 3 per un bottino parziale di €71,000.

America: #Arrogate in razza dal 2018. In pista l’ultima volta nella Breeders’ Cup Classic di Del Mar il 4 Novembre
Come ampiamente preannunciato nei mesi scorsi, il campione Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) difenderà la corona nella Breeders’ Cup Classic G1 di Del Mar il 4 Novembre e quella sarà l’ultima volta che lo vedremo in pista perchè il campione di Juddmonte entrerà direttamente in razza presso la succursale americana di Juddmonte a Lexington, in Kentucky ad un tasso di monta non ancora reso noto ma che sarà di sicuro a 6 cifre.
Il 4 anni figlio di Unbridled’s Song (Unbridled) sta lavorando nella calma di Santa Anita Park per prepararsi al meglio al suo ultimo show, e nell’ultimo lavoro sostenuto in ordine temporale ha prodotto un bel canterone finendo in 1:00 1/5 martedì mattina, in preparazione al Classic appunto soddisfacendo in pieno Bob Baffert. Per lui ora solo mantenimento e qualche breeze prima di presentarsi a Del Mar sotto le luci della ribalta.
Cominciamo con il tirare le somme della sua carriera, ed in particolare con il 2016 scintillante. In generale ha vinto 4 corse a livello di G1 tra cui le Travers Stakes G1 per 13 lunghezze e mezzo a tempo di record, poi la Breeders’ Cup Classic G1 battendo California Chrome e portandosi a casa anche l’edizione inaugurale della Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes G1 per 4 lunghezze e 3/4 a Gulfstream a fine Gennaio, senza dimenticare l’esibizione monstre nella Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline G1. In quella occasione il race caller di giornata, Terry Spargo lo ha descritto come il “the Man o’ War of the 21st century.”
Quest’anno non sono state tutte rose e fiori, perchè non si può dimenticare il secondo inatteso nel TVG Pacific Classic G1 di Del Mar ad Agosto e prima ancora il quarto nel TVG San Diego Handicap G2. Ma forse non era al top della condizione e per stessa ammissione del suo allenatore la preparazione non era filata liscia come l’olio. Resta comunque impresso a caratteri cubitali il titolo di cavallo più ricco d’America con i suoi $17,302,600 guadagnati in pista. Molti di più ne guadagnerà in razza. Allevato in Kentucky dalla Clearsky Farms è prodotto della fattrice Bubbler (Distorted Humor) e fu pagato $560,000 alle Keeneland September yearling sale del 2014. Un buon affare, diremmo.
