De Vries says Secret has ‘serious chance’ as heavy rain threatens
German raider among 20 left in Chantilly race
With the threat of heavy rain at Chantilly on Sunday and his trials day winner in tip-top shape, jockey Adrie de Vries is relishing his first Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe ride on Dschingis Secret.
Trained in Cologne by Markus Klug, Prix Foy winner Dschingis Secret is a 14-1 shot to give Germany only a third winner of Europe’s premier race – but her rider insisted on Monday she has a “serious chance” of toppling Enable and co.
Dschingis Secret was one of 20 left in the Qatar-sponsored showpiece after the first forfeits on Monday, with red-hot favourite Enable due to be added at a cost of €120,000 on Wednesday.
Juddmonte International winner Ulysses is second favourite at 7-1, although connections will be hoping conditions do not become too testing for a colt who also has the Breeders’ Cup Turf on his agenda.
Leading French-trained hopes Brametot, Zarak and Cloth Of Stars remain on track, while Aidan O’Brien is responsible for seven of the horses left in the €5 million contest, including Winter and Capri, who are among only five three-year-olds standing their ground, although hot favourite Enable is set to join them.
The ground on Monday morning was soft with a penetrometer reading of 3.7, identical conditions to trials day when Dschingis Secret impressed in beating Cloth Of Stars and Japanese challenger Satono Diamond.
While temperatures will be lurking around the 20C mark for most of the week, some forecasts are predicting up to 25mm of rain on raceday – which is music to the ears of de Vries.
“It’s great news,” said the Dutch-born rider. “We’ve been checking the weather for the last two weeks. There wasn’t much forecast but now it looks like there may be some coming Thursday, then again on Sunday. I’m delighted because it’s a big help if the ground is soft.”
Dschingis Secret had been trading at around 16-1 since his win in the Foy but the removal of one major rival in fellow trials day winner Cracksman, combined with the potential deterioration of the weather, means he has been trimmed to a best-priced 14-1.
“He’s proven he likes Chantilly and if the ground is soft we’re very hopeful he can run a good race,” added de Vries, who landed the Group 1 Preis von Europa in Cologne at the weekend for Klug.
“The horses are running really well, what with Windstoss being a Group 1 winner on Sunday, and it’s always nice to go there with the stable in good form.
“Dschingis Secret has come out of the Prix Foy well and didn’t have a hard race. He’ll have a little grass gallop tomorrow morning – it won’t be anything serious – and we just want to keep him sound and happy for Sunday.
“I’ve never had an Arc ride so it’s very exciting. He has a serious chance and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Dual Group 1 winner Iquitos is a second Arc string to the German bow, and the nation is 14-1 with Ladbrokes to provide the winner. The UK is favourite at 4-7, and rain would be no deterrent to Enable, who has already won the Oaks and King George in downpours.
Ireland is 7-2 to come out on top, although O’Brien’s line-up has yet to be confirmed.
Jean-Claude Rouget put the finishing touches on Monday to Prix du Jockey Club winner Brametot, who breezed at Deauville racecourse under big-race jockey Cristian Demuro.
“He worked well, picking up the bit halfway round the home turn and galloping to the line,” reported Demuro. “If the horse you saw in the Jockey Club turns up he can be involved in the finish.”

Star Appeal caused one of the biggest shocks in the 97-year history of the race when bursting between runners at the furlong marker to score under Greville Starkey at odds of 118-1 in 1975.
Arguably a bigger surprise was that Waldemar Zeitelhack’s five-year-old, who had been trained earlier in his career by John Oxx, was allowed to start at such a price given Starkey had won the Eclipse at Sandown on him that season.
The only other Arc winner to be trained in Germany was the Peter Schiergen-trained Danedream, who scored by five lengths from Shareta in race-record time in 2011 partnered by an overjoyed Andrasch Starke.
Teruya Yoshida bought a share in the filly shortly before she was supplemented for the Arc and, having gone on to land the King George at Ascot the following season, she would have been among the leading contenders in 2012 but was prevented from travelling to Paris following an outbreak of equine infectious anaemia.
Among compatriots to have run well in the race are It’s Gino, who dead-heated for third behind Zarkava in 2008, the same placing occupied by Tiger Hill in 1998 and the Kieren Fallon-ridden Borgia 12 months earlier.
But there was disappointment in 1986 when three-time German Horse of the Year Acatenango could finish only seventh to Dancing Brave, while another King George winner, Novellist, suffered a setback in the week of the 2013 Arc which ruled him out of the race.

Raining champion: why Enable doesn’t care about the weather
Enable, this year’s superstar three-year-old and hot favourite for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, is a filly for all seasons – which is a good job as she simply loves winning in the rain.
Some weather forecasts suggest Chantilly on Sunday could be decidedly dodgy, with heavy rain anticipated throughout Arc day, but connections and punters should not worry, given Enable’s outstanding record when the heavens open.
So, what evidence do we have?
Her CV is impressive. Dual Classic star and four-time Group 1 winner, all by margins of more than four and a half lengths and, remarkably, she’s achieved most of that in weather more commonly seen in deep midwinter.
Come rain or shine, queen Enable delivers – most notably in this year’s Oaks and King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, in which she triumphed in torrential rain.
The freak storm at Epsom certainly failed to stop her as she went on to win by five lengths from Rhododendron.
And it was no different against the boys in the King George at Ascot in July, when again the weather gods were powerless to prevent the inevitable, an incredible Enable victory – this time against Eclipse and Juddmonte winner and potential Arc rival Ulysses by four and a half lengths.
So, with Enable’s stunning record whatever the weather, it’s fair to say her Arc opponents should run scared, and perhaps even more so if the forecast proves correct.

Six lettres. Soit une de plus que dans les patronymes des deux dernières pouliches ayant réussi à intégrer le palmarès du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
A l’instar des championnes Trêve et Found, Enable porte un nom simple, comme évident. De ceux dont on a l’impression de les connaître depuis toujours. Il faut dire qu’avec son palmarès incroyable à seulement trois ans, Enable a pas mal fait parler d’elle ces derniers mois…
Fille du champion Nathaniel vainqueur en 2011 à seulement 3 ans des King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes et de Concentric, une lauréate de Listed ayant évolué sur les hippodromes français en 2007-2008, Enable porte à l’instar de sa mère la casaque du Prince Khalid Abdullah.
Auteure de débuts victorieux lors de son année de 2 ans à Newcastle, la jument connait son seul échec en course pour sa deuxième sortie, une rentrée de 5 mois à Newburry, 3e de sa compagne d’écurie et de casaque Shutter Speed (4e du Diane 2017). En mai 2017, Enable n’est encore qu’une chic pouliche. C’est alors qu’elle est associée à Lanfranco Dettori pour la première fois de sa carrière…
Avec cette victoire, la pouliche décroche son ticket pour Epsom. A l’issue de la course, son jockey Lanfranco Dettori déclare au Sun : « C’est une belle pouliche, très intelligente. Elle commence à connaître son métier ». C’est que l’homme n’a qu’entrevu le potentiel de sa monture.
Dans les Oaks d’Epsom, la petite Enable va continuer de montrer au monde de quoi elle est réellement capable.
Elle remporte la course, devançant sous une pluie battante une certaine Rhododendron, l’une des leaders de la génération. Lanfranco Dettori confessait alors aux médias anglais qu’avant la course « dans un petit coin de sa tête il y croyait un petit peu », avouant toutefois n’avoir pu totalement savourer son succès à cause de la terrible météo.
Les observateurs ne pouvaient alors être totalement formels : la performance hors du commun d’Enable pouvait facilement être mise sur le compte d’une meilleure aptitude au terrain et à la météo que ses adversaires du jour. Elle devait confirmer.
Et c’est dans les Oaks irlandaises au Curragh que tout le monde a enfin compris qu’Enable était une pouliche sortant largement de l’ordinaire.
Waouh ! Après sa victoire dans les Oaks anglaises, elle remporte donc les Oaks irlandaises et s’annonce comme la grande favorite à seulement 3 ans des King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, « l’Arc d’été », que son père avait remporté à son âge. Qu’elle survole, devançant Ulysses ou encore Highland Reel, ses illustres aînés.
« C’est la meilleure pouliche que j’aie jamais entraînée », déclare John Gosden, après ce succès. Sa jument devient la première dans l’histoire à remporter le triplé Oaks anglaises & irlandaises et King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Sa dernière course avant l’Arc, The Yorkshire Oaks, est une nouvelle formalité pour la pouliche, décidément de plus en plus impressionnante.
Enable se présente au départ du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe avec le statut d’immense favorite, d’incroyable attraction. Avant le coup, ils sont peu nombreux à l’imaginer battue, voire même poussée dans ses retranchements. Enable doit gagner, parce qu’Enable gagne toujours, et qu’on ne s’en lassera jamais.

Siamo a lunedì, ufficialmente siamo entrati nella settimana del Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe G1 di domenica pomeriggio a Chantilly, il 1 Ottobre, con in palio 5 milioni di euro e la gloria eterna, di gran lunga più preziosa dell’oro nero che brilla al sole parigino.
Alla fine sono in 20 i rimasti e non ci sono assenze significative tra i rimasti, tranne 2. Una, Cracksman, era già stata annunciata da Anthony Oppenheimer nella tarda mattinata di domenica. L’altra riguarda Enable (Nathaniel) che non figura nei 20 rimasti ma solo perchè non era iscritta e verrà supplementata entro mercoledì al costo di €120,000. Dunque, niente paura, la campionessa ci sarà ed il suo ruolo è quello di protagonista. Al momento il market la vede favorita a 4/5, un quotone se pensiamo che direttamente ed indirettamente ha già battuto tutti. Il dubbio è legato al tracciato ed al tipo di corsa, sarà fondamentale capire quale steccato avrà per venire a capo di una corsa che per una come lei è assolutamente alla portata.
Aidan O’Brien, che sta cercando di emulare il record di Bobby Frankel che vanta 25 G1 in una stagione, è responsabile del training di 7 dei 20 rimasti alla prova parigina, tra questi c’è la campionessa Winter che con Enable divide il ruolo di reginetta d’Europa, ma su distanze più brevi. Il miglio e mezzo sembra essere nelle sue corde, dunque Padre Aidan prepara la sorpresa. Sarà interessante capire la scelta di Ryan Moore. Gli altri rimasti sono Highland Reel, Order Of St George, Idaho, Seventh Heaven, Cliffs Of Moher e l’altro grigio Capri. Problemi di abbondanza? Ad avercene…
Sir Michael Stoute ha confermato Ulysses (Galileo), Hajime Satomi ha lasciato dentro Satono Diamond ed il compagno Satono Noblesse, Andre Fabre difenderà la Francia con Doha Dream, Cloth Of Stars (quota troppo alta per un cavallo che arriva perfetto all’appuntamento) e Plumatic, mentre Alain de Royer-Dupre ha lasciato dentro Zarak e One Foot In Heaven.
Brametot, che ha lavorato ieri molto bene con Cristian Demuro in sella, poi Silverwave e Left Hand rappresenteranno il resto della Francia, con la Germania che invierà il progressivo Dschingis Secret ed il vincitore di G1 Iquitos.
