Needing to come down some a couple of pegs after a latest sixth in the G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville July 30, Usherette duly returned to the winner’s spot for the first time since last year’s G2 Duke of Cambridge S. In the interim, the homebred had suffered two knocks to her confidence when sixth in the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket last July and on her latest outing but had shown she retained all her ability in between when third in the G1 Prix d’Ispahan at Chantilly May 28 and the latest edition of the Duke of Cambridge at Royal Ascot June 21. Unlike in the Rothschild, when she was ridden from the front, the bay was anchored with two behind early tanking along for Mickael Barzalona. Getting a couple of smacks to deliver her winning effort, she veered left as she gained the lead in the final 50 metres but was allowed to keep it by the officials after an inquiry.
Usherette is the first foal out of the useful Monday Show, whose second was the winner’s full-sister Show Day (Ire) who was a listed winner in Germany and finished third in the G3 Premio Elena E Sergio Cumani. The second dam is the G3 Prix Penelope scorer La Sylphide (Swi) (Barathea {Ire}), who produced two other black-type performers headed by the GII Red Smith H. and GIII Fair Grounds H. winner Expansion (Maria’s Mon) who was also third in the GI Man o’ War S. and GI Manhattan H. From the family of the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Vespone (Ire) and the G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Hong Kong Vase runner-up Purple Moon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), as well as the top-level scorers Vallee Enchantee (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), Volga (Ire) (Caerleon) and Maids Causeway (Ire) (Giant’s Causeway), Monday Show’s 2-year-old colt by Cape Cross (Ire) is named African Jazz (Ire), while she also has a yearling filly by Exceed and Excel (Aus).

JULIET FOXTROT (GB) (f, 2, Dansili {GB}–Kilo Alpha {GB} {SW-Fr}, by King’s Best), an Aug. 12 debut fifth going seven furlongs at Newmarket last time, broke well and accepted a tow in third until inching closer in the straight. Challenging on the bridle passing the two pole, the 8-11 chalk quickened clear approaching the final eighth and was pushed out to score by an impressive seven lengths from Richenza (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). She is out of Listed Prix de Bagatelle victress Kilo Alpha (GB) (King’s Best) and is thus kin to G3 Prix Thomas Bryon third Alpha Bravo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a yearling filly by Siyouni (Fr) and a colt foal by Kingman (GB).
