Soustraction | Scoop Dyga

Beaten three lengths by TDN Rising Star Efaadah over 7 1/2 furlongs on debut at Deauville Aug. 8, Soustraction rewarded trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias’s guile in pitching her back in against that rival by readily reversing the form. Settled third early by Maxime Guyon, the chestnut snuck up the fence to gain the lead with 300 metres to race as Efaadah and fellow TDN Rising Star Wild Illusion got going from behind. Pressed all the way to the line by that duo, the homebred was too strong for either on a day when closers had tough assignments around this circuit.
This race is significant in its own right, but also serves as a vital trial for the Oct. 1 G1 Prix Marcel Boussac over the same course and distance. “I have to say I was very disappointed not to see her win first time out, but in a race for newcomers you never know and you can run into a very fit horse,” Laffon-Parias commented. “I did not hesitate to run her here, as I knew she had improved and I knew she stays very well and this course would suit her better than Deauville. This is the first time I have won a group race with a maiden and she has earned a place in the Marcel Boussac.” Efaadah’s trainer Freddie Head could not hide his dismay at the result. “I am disappointed, certainly, but I think it was a combination of the ground being unsuitable for a Dansili and not having the best of trips,” he said. “I have no plans for her at this stage.”
Soustraction’s dam Mathematicienne is a full-sister to the Listed La Coupe des Trois Ans winner Galipad (Ire), with their respective dam Never Green having taken the Listed Prix Occitanie. She is a daughter of the G3 Prix Cleopatre winner and outstanding producer Brooklyn’s Dance, whose six black-type winners are headed by the surprise G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Solemnia (Ire) (Poliglote {GB}). She is also responsible for the dual pattern-race scorer and G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Prospect Park (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and his G2 Prix Greffulhe-winning full-brother Prospect Wells (Fr) who was also runner-up in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Poliglote and Galileo share Sadler’s Wells as a sire and Never Green’s Listed Prix de la Pepiniere-winning half-sister Gold Dodger (Slew O’Gold) is the second dam of another son of Galileo in last year’s G1 Sussex S. and G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains hero The Gurkha (Ire). Mathematicienne’s yearling filly is by Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) and is named Mathematica (Ger).

Stage Magic | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Godolphin’s productive weekend continued here, with Stage Magic pulling another rabbit out of the hat for the organisation by getting the better of TDN Rising Star Olmedo. Having beaten the subsequently listed-placed Albishr (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) by 4 1/2 lengths on debut over seven furlongs at Newbury July 21, the bay was a short-head second in the Listed Criterium du FEE over a mile at Deauville Aug. 19 and was placed in front from the outset by James Doyle keen to utilise his mount’s knowledge. With Cristian Demuro keen to obtain cover on the 3-5 favourite Olmedo from his wide draw, he had to sit in rear which gave the upper hand to the leader on easy ground which was against the Rouget runner. Stage Magic was tackled and headed by Zyzzyva with over a furlong remaining as Olmedo tried to get organised on the outside, but the Godolphin representative battled gamely against the rail to retrieve the advantage. As Zyzzyva gave best 75 metres from the line, Olmedo found a surge but it was too late for the market leader.
Charlie Appleby was a happy trainer afterwards as he reflected on his stable’s strength in depth among its juveniles. “This horse had good experience and loved the ground and maybe that made a little bit of difference today,” he said. “We might have something better for the [Oct. 1 G1] Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere–maybe Masar who won the Solario yesterday–so we’ll see and make a decision about this colt in time.” Olmedo’s trainer Jean-Claude Rouget said, “Obviously, he lacked experience and I did not want him to have a hard race today so he did what he did on his own. The post just came a stride too soon, but it was a very good effort and he will improve a lot. He will run in the Lagardere if he is in good form and will definitely be two lengths better next time.”
Stage Magic’s dam Witnessed is a daughter of the GIII Royal Heroine S. winner Magic Mission, who also produced the recent G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil winner Talismanic (GB) (Medaglia d’Oro). Magic Mission’s dam Dream Ticket is a daughter of the GIII Vineland H. scorer Capo Di Monte (Ire) (Final Straw {GB}), who is herself a half-sister to the G1 Aral-Pokal heroine Wind In Her Hair (Ire) (Alzao). Her claim to fame came as the dam of the Japanese Triple Crown winner and G1 Japan Cup hero and leading sire influence Deep Impact (Jpn). Witnessed’s yearling filly is by Bungle Inthejungle (GB).

SWEETY DREAM (FR) (f, 2, Dream Ahead–Excellent Girl {GB}, by Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who was scratched from her intended debut at Deauville Aug. 8, broke well and cut across from an outer gate to lead after the initial exchanges of this belated unveiling. Holding sway thereafter, the 73-10 chance was shaken up with 300 metres to go and pushed out in latter stages to comfortably best Skrei (Ire) (Approve {Ire}) by 2 1/2 lengths. “She is a nice filly and was supposed to run at Deauville, but for some unknown reason she got scared going into the gates and flipped over and fell so was withdrawn by the starter,” trainer Pascal Bary explained. “She had been working well and that was most promising.” The €30,000 AROCT yearling, kin to a yearling colt by Siyouni (Fr), is the third scorer from as many foals to race for G3 Prix Cleopatre third Excellent Girl (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), herself out of a half-sister to GI Garden City Breeders’ Cup S. victress Luas Line (Ire) (Danehill) and G2 International Bosphorus Cup hero Lost in the Moment (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Cape Cross’s Guignol Takes the Grosser Preis Von Baden

Guignol | Galoponline.de

By Tom Frary

Rested since a disappointing fourth in the July 1 G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis at Hamburg, Guignol showed what an effective front-runner he is on his best days by dominating this renewal under a perfectly-judged ride from Filip Minarik. Jumping out of the shadows when sent to the lead by Michael Cadeddu in Munich’s G1 Grosser Preis Von Bayern in November, the Ullmann homebred had upset the Godolphin raiders Racing History (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy). He traded at odds of 33-1 for that 12-furlong contest which were inflated given that he had finished third to the country’s standard-bearer Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) in both Hamburg’s G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis in July and the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten the following month. Cutting no ice when sixth on his return in the G1 Prix Ganay over 10 1/2 furlongs at Saint-Cloud at the beginning of May, the bay returned to domestic duty to upstage Iquitos by a neck in the 11-furlong G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft here May 28 prior to his below-par effort in the Hansa-Preis.
Enjoying it easy initially, he started to wind it up a long way from home with Godolphin’s Prize Money (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) keeping him honest and by the time he had turned into the straight he looked to have all his opponents in trouble. With old rival Iquitos failing to pick up in his usual style on the inner and running slightly flat, Guignol stayed out on his own for a commanding success as Colomano fared best of the 3-year-olds.
Guignol is one of two group 1 winners out of the G1 Oaks d’Italia heroine Guadalupe, with the other being the G1 Grosser Dallmay-Preis hero Guiliani. Guadalupe is also the dam of the dual listed winner and G3 Walther J Jacobs-Stutenpreis runner-up Guantana (Ger) (Dynaformer), who is herself the dam of three black-type performers headed by the G2 Gerling-Preis scorer Guardini (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}). Guadalupe is a full-sister to the 2009 winner of this prestige event Getaway (Ger), who also captured the and G1 Grosser Preis von Dusseldorf, as well as being a half-sister to the Listed Grand Prix de Lyon winner and G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Geoffrey Freer S. runner-up Guadalajara (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}). This is also the family of the five-times group 1-winning Alexander Goldrun (Ire) (Goldaway {Ire}) and the high-class stayer Royal Rebel (GB) (Robellino). Guadalupe’s as-yet unraced 2-year-old filly by Lawman (Fr) is named Guardian Witch (Ire), while her yearling filly by Australia (GB) is named Gympie (Ger).

Reliable Man | Emma Berry

By Tom Frary

Becoming the first black-type winner for her first-season sire, Narella built on the promise of her debut win over seven furlongs at Cologne July 9 to maintain her perfect tally with authority here. Settled towards the rear early, the grey was delivered wide in the straight by Adrie de Vries and after taking over approaching the furlong pole drew away in style from the previously unbeaten Auenperle, with the market leader Julio well adrift. Narella is a daughter of the listed winner Naomia, who is also the second dam of last year’s G2 Oaks d’Italia heroine Nepal (Ger) (Kallisto {Ger}). The dam, who has a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire) named Navega (Ger) and a 2017 full-sister to Narella named Nadira (Ger), was the leading performer for another Oaks d’Italia winner in Nagoya, who is herself the best daughter of the G2 Hessen-Pokal scorer Nuas (Ger) (Aspros {Ger}). KOREA: Indian Star Successfully Defends Jeju Governor’s Cup

by gyongmaman

Indian Star made it difficult for herself but had enough in the tank to win her second consecutive Jeju Governor’s Cup at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday afternoon.

Strangely the defending champion, who returned to form with a very good 2nd place in a recent tough handicap at Busan, was’t sent off as favourite but under jockey Lim Sung Sil, Indian Star took the race by the scruff of its neck and raced into an early lead. At the top of the stretch, it looked set to be a procession, however, then the antics started.

First Indian Star ducked one way and then the other, losing her momentum and giving away her advantage. Bright Star attacked on one side and Chang Se on the other but jockey Lim managed to rouse Indian Star for one final push to get home on top by  a neck.

Indian Star, a half-sister to this year’s KRA Cup Mile winner Indian King, has now won 11 of 23 starts.
