Big Orange and St George teed up for another battle royale
Big Orange is ready for a stayers’ title showdown with Order Of St George at the Curragh next Sunday with the last two Ascot Gold Cup winners on course for the Irish St Leger.
The pair brought the Royal Ascot house down with their pulsating duel up the home straight in the Gold Cup, with Big Orange foiling the Coolmore stayer’s bid for a repeat victory.
Paddy Power make Order Of St George their red-hot favourite at 4-6 to gain his revenge, with Big Orange second best at 5-1.
The British hope’s trainer Michael Bell is waiting for the weather to play its part to commit Bill and Tim Gredley’s popular stayer to the Comer Group International-sponsored Group 1 over 1m6f.
“He’s locked and loaded, as Donald Trump says,” said Bell. “He worked very well this morning and we’re keen to go, provided the ground is okay for him.”
‘He bounced back quickly’
The Big Orange team want to avoid another war of attrition on softer ground after the six-year-old was defeated by three-year-old Stradivarius in his bid for a Goodwood Cup hat-trick.
“I’ve never seen him so tired as after the Goodwood race,” added Bell. “But he bounced back very quickly and has been fine.”
Bell confirmed the Melbourne Cup was never on the radar after Big Orange’s Ascot triumph and he was never nominated for the Australia trip.
“If he doesn’t run in the Irish St Leger there are plenty of alternatives. He could run in the Doncaster Cup and then there’s the Cadran and the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, but we’ll be looking for the better ground for him, wherever that is.”
Aidan O’Brien, reporting Order Of St George in good shape, said: “Obviously, he hasn’t done much since winning at the Curragh the last day but he seems in good form.
“He had a little break after Ascot and we were delighted with how well he won at the Curragh on his first run back. We’re hoping he’ll run in the Irish St Leger now and we’re happy with him.”
Brendan Sheridan, clerk of the course of the Curragh, said: “I’m very happy with the state of the ground and there will be fresh ground in use.
“We will know a lot more on Monday as there rain forecast for tonight [Saturday] and tomorrow. It depends on how much we get. There is an unsettled forecast for the week ahead.”

GOLDRUSH (IRE) (f, 3, Frankel {GB}–Alexander Goldrun {Ire} {Hwt. 3yo Filly-Ire at 9 1/2-10 1/2f, Hwt. Older Mare-Ire at 9 1/2-10 1/2f, MG1SW-Ire, G1SW-Eng, Fr & HK, G1SP-Sin, $3,387,103}, by Gold Away {Ire}), a daughter of the same stable’s remarkable Alexander Goldrun who had taken time to make her debut after costing €1,700,000 as a GOFORB yearling, raced behind the leading duo throughout the opening stages. Sent to the front with a quarter mile to race, the 6-1 shot was pushed out to assert for a ready three-length success from Wooster (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}). “It’s always nice to win with a filly as well-bred as she is,” Jim Bolger told Irish Racing.com. “She has been working well, but we’ve had a few little hiccups along the way. She was a bit weak last year so we didn’t run her and a few times we had her ready to run this year and she had small little problems, nothing serious. She was declared to run a few times and she got rained off one day. She doesn’t want soft ground, but she handled that well today so she might handle a little ease in it. Hopefully she will go on now and be a Stakes filly.” Alexander Goldrun was the winner of the G1 Pretty Polly S. twice in her native Ireland, the G1 Nassau S. in Britain, G1 Prix de l’Opera in France and G1 Hong Kong Cup and that is only half her story. Also a half-sister to the sire Medecis (GB), who won the G3 Prix de la Jonchere and placed second in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix de la Foret, she has a 2-year-old daughter of Shamardal named Une Alliance (Ire) who sold at Goffs Orby last year for €600,000. Tried in the G1 1000 Guineas last May, Aljazzi was 10th in that Newmarket Classic before headinng to Haydock to capture the Listed Dick Hern Fillies’ S. also over a mile in August. Limited to only two more outings at three, the bay was fourth in the G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies S. over an extended nine furlongs at Gowran Park the following month and ninth in the Listed Gillies Fillies’ S. attempting 10 furlongs on soft ground at Doncaster in November. Returning at this trip to take Kempton’s Listed Snowdrop Fillies’ S. Apr. 15, the homebred failed to see out the extra furlong of the G2 Dahlia S. when fifth in that Newmarket contest May 7 before outrunning her 40-1 odds when second in the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. at Royal Ascot June 21. That meant that bar her Guineas effort, only Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) had beaten her at this trip so far in her career but the punters remained unconvinced and sent her off only third best in the market.
Held up in rear racing keenly after a tardy start, Aljazzi needed rousting along at the end of the back straight and needed to be kept up to her work to close down the outer once straightened for home. When she hit her stride, it was over as soon as she struck the front approaching the furlong pole and she powered up the incline to put the solid yardstick Nathra firmly in her place. “The plan was to sit a bit closer to the pace, but she hasn’t run for over two months and she was a bit rusty early on,” jockey Andrea Atzeni said. “I left her alone and she likes to pass horses anyway. She picked up really well. She’s quite light and busy, so I think the two-month break suited her.”
Trainer Marco Botti will aim Aljazzi at the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket Oct. 7. “She’s definitely a filly who has got better as a four-year-old. She’s more mature and stronger,” he commented. “The plan was to be a bit closer to the pace, but they went a genuine pace all the way and Andrea sat at the back and she picked up well. She’s progressing and she’s a nice filly to have in the yard. If she did well here the plan has always been to go straight to the Sun Chariot and I think that will be the plan.”
The first foal out of the Listed John Musker Fillies’ S. winner Nouriya, Aljazzi descends from Shy Danceuse whose progeny list includes the Listed Oppenheim-Rennen scorer Shy Lady (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}). She in turn can boast four black-type winners among her own progeny, headed by the G1 St James’s Palace S.-winning sire Zafeen (Fr) and the G3 Prix du Calvados winner Ya Hajar (GB) (Lycius). She is herself the dam of the Listed Patton S. winner and G3 Diamond S. runner-up Prince of All (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}). Nouriya’s 2-year-old colt by Henrythenavigator is not currently named, while her yearling filly is by Australia (GB) and she also has a filly foal by Frankel (GB).

Earning TDN Rising Star status with a defeat of the subsequent G2 Gimcrack S. runner-up Invincible Army (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) on debut over six furlongs at Goodwood May 25, Masar was third to the leading fillies September (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Nyaleti (Ire) (Arch) in the Listed Chesham S. over this trip at Royal Ascot June 24 and came into this staging post fresh after a break. Settled behind the leading duo early, the homebred was roused to take over with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and stayed on strongly up the hill. “I thought it was a nice, professional performance,” jockey James Doyle commented. “He had good form in the book, obviously and we knew he’d see out the trip well so we just kept it simple. He took a little bit of time to drop down into gear, but once he did he powered away nicely. I’d say a step up in trip will suit him.”
Charlie Appleby is looking at the G2 Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket Sept. 30 for the chestnut. “He got a dream run round and I was confident going into the final furlong he was going to carry on galloping and he did nicely,” he said. “It was a pleasing performance and I hope he’s a horse with a bright future. He’s potentially a horse for the Royal Lodge. We feel next year will be his year, so we’ll treat him with some kid gloves, hopefully get another run under our belts and then put him away for the winter.”
Masar is the second foal out of the G2 UAE Derby and G3 UAE Oaks heroine Khawlah, who is herself a half-sister to the G2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano scorer and G1 Jebel Hatta runner-up Vancouverite (GB) (Dansili {GB}). The third dam Melikah captured the Listed Pretty Polly S. before placing in the G1 English and Irish Oaks and produced three black-type winners headed by the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville hero Masterstroke (Monsun {Ger}) who also finished third in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Her other notable performer is the G3 Meld S. scorer Moonlight Magic (GB) who shares Cape Cross as a sire with Khawlah. Melikah is in turn a daughter of the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine and outstanding producer Urban Sea (Miswaki), whose Sea the Stars (Ire) is also by Cape Cross, suggesting Masar’s juvenile achievements are only a bonus over trips short of his ideal. Khawlah’s yearling colt is by Shamardal.
