Ajman Princess enhances British record in Group 1 contest
British raiders have an excellent record in the Group 1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet and Ajman Princess added to the tally by landing this year’s running under a great ride from Andrea Atzeni, denying Siyoushake and Aurelien Lemaitre.
Sent off at an unconsidered 11-1, the Roger Varian-trained filly, who only lost her maiden tag in March this year, led the field into the straight when Atzeni angled her off the rail before quickening up well and holding on gamely to claim the prize.
She survived a stewards’ inquiry to make it five wins in the last six years for British-trained runners.
Varian said: “That was very satisfying. She liked the ground.”
Siyoushake launched the strongest challenge for the home nation, finishing runner-up, while the gambled-on Left Hand was third and the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Smart Call was fourth.
Favourite backers would have been excited as Frankie Dettori brought 6-5 market leader So Mi Dar into contention entering the straight, but the lightly-raced filly flattened out and finished a well-held fifth.
Ajman Princess earned quotes between 14-1 and 20-1 for the Qipco Champion Fillies and Mares Stakes.

All recent form suggested Ajman Princess had it to prove here, especially as she was only second in the Listed Lyric S. at York last time July 28, but this was a below-par renewal and the Roger Varian improver was able to dictate from the front under a perfect ride from Andrea Atzeni and register an ultimately decisive 14-1 upset. With the 6-4 favourite So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) failing to fire, only Siyoushake (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) emerged with a genuine threat in the straight but she outstayed that rival to win by 1 1/4 lengths, with Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a short head away in third.
