Teofilo’s Massaat Impressive In the Hungerford

Saturday, August 19, 2017

Massaat | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

MASSAAT (IRE), c, 4, Teofilo (Ire)–Madany (Ire), by Acclamation (GB).

O-Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum; B-Shadwell Estate Company Ltd (IRE); T-Owen Burrows; J-Jim Crowley. £85,065. Lifetime Record: MG1SP-Eng, 7-2-3-0, £307,689.

Making his comeback having been injured in the G3 Sovereign S. at Salisbury last August, Massaat was straight back in the swing as he conjured up his basic class to re-establish himself in an elite position he had previously enjoyed when runner-up in the 2015 G1 Dewhurst S. and in last year’s G1 2000 Guineas. Tanking along for Jim Crowley over two lengths off the other Shadwell representative Ibn Malik (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) throughout the early stages, the 12-1 shot moved to the front smoothly with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and was pushed out to secure a comfortable 1 3/4-length defeat of Librisa Breeze (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}), with a half length back to Nathra (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) in third. “It’s a great training performance to have him ready,” Crowley said. “It’s the first time I’ve ridden him and he gave me a great feel. He loved that slower ground and I think it’s quite important to him as he’s a big horse who hits the ground quite hard. Seven furlongs was ideal first time back, as he was a little bit fresh and free early on. He saw it out well and galloped out well. He’s a strong traveller and a mile will be fine for him when he relaxes better next time.” Trainer Owen Burrows added, “I thought he’d be rusty and I was just looking to get him back on track but he won impressively. He had a chip removed from his front fetlock and then was injured in recuperation at Shadwell, so the whole team have done a great job with him. We’ll get him back home and fingers crossed he’ll be fine in the morning and we’ll plot then. We’ll have to look at Group 1s, but it’s important that he has a bit of cut in the ground as it was firm at Salisbury when he injured himself. We’ll keep away from that ground.”

Galileo’s Order of St George Back To His Best At The Curragh

ORDER OF ST GEORGE (IRE), h, 5, Galileo (Ire)–Another Storm, by Gone West. ($550,000 Ylg ’13 KEESEP).

O-Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & LLoyd J Williams; B-Paget Bloodstock (IRE); T-Aidan O’Brien; J-Ryan Moore. €37,170. Lifetime Record: Hwt. 3yo-Eur at 14f+, Hwt. Older Horse-Eur at 14f+, G1SW-Ire & Eng, G1SP-Fr, 19-9-6-1, €909,730. *1/2 to Asperity (War Chant), GSW-Fr & GSP-Eng, $245,483; Angel Terrace (Ghostzapper), GSW-US, $298,848; and Sehoy (Menifee), SW-Swe, $144,199.

Losing his G1 Gold Cup title by a short head to Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) at Royal Ascot June 22, Order of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) returned to home soil to dominate this trial for the G1 Irish St Leger he also surrendered in 2016 having been so impressive in it a year earlier. Shaken up from the break by Ryan Moore to gain a prominent position in third, the 1-2 favourite was committed passing the quarter pole and drew clear powerfully to win by 4 3/4 lengths from the 3-year-old G2 Curragh Cup winner Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), with 2 1/2 lengths back to Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in third. “He’s a high-class horse and the race suited him well, so hopefully he can keep going forward from here,” his rider said. “He likes that nice ground and it helps him, but he was third on fast ground in the Arc.”

Oasis Dream’s Polydream Clear Best In the Calvados

Saturday, August 19, 2017

5th at DVL, Gr. Stk, €80,000 G3 Shadwell Prix du Calvados (7f) Winner: Polydream (Ire), f, 2 by Oasis Dream (GB)

Polydream | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

POLYDREAM (IRE), f, 2, Oasis Dream (GB)–Polygreen (Fr) (SW-Fr & GSP-US, $173,671).

O/B-Wertheimer & Frere (IRE); T-Freddy Head; J-Maxime Guyon. €40,000. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, €53,500. *1/2 to Evaporation (Fr) (Red Ransom), MSW & MGSP-Fr, $366,599.

Registering a decisive success on debut over six furlongs here July 30, Polydream was outnumbered by the British raiders but was well on top at the end of this hot renewal to remain unbeaten. Settled off the pace early racing down the centre by Maxime Guyon, the 8-5 favourite was sent to the front travelling strongly 1 1/2 out and after establishing an unassailable lead was being patted down the neck as she won by 1 3/4 lengths from Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), with Bonita Fransisca (Fr) (Pedro the Great) 2 1/2 lengths back in third. “She’s a lovely filly and a real good one,” trainer Freddy Head said. “She’s a lovely mover with a lot of speed and we now have to make a decision about whether we drop back down to six for the [G1] Cheveley Park S. [at Newmarket Sept. 30] or step up to a mile for the [G1 Prix] Marcel Boussac [at Chantilly Oct. 1]. Nothing is definite.”

Dubawi’s Sobetsu Takes the Nonette

Saturday, August 19, 2017

SOBETSU (GB), f, 3, Dubawi (Ire)–Lake Toya (SW & GSP-Fr, SW-Eng, $135,852), by Darshaan (GB).

O-Godolphin; B-Darley (GB); T-Charlie Appleby; J-James Doyle. €74,100. Lifetime Record: G1SW-Fr & G1SP-Eng, 7-3-0-2, €319,004.

This race lost a key player when Shutter Speed (GB) (Dansili {GB}) was ruled out due to the rain-affected ground, but another TDN Rising Star in Sobetsu stepped forward to inject a touch of class over the course and distance over which she had won the May 14 G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Third in the G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood last time Aug. 3, the 2-1 favourite was in front initially before settling in third for James Doyle. Moving forward to take command with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, the homebred stayed on strongly to beat Onthemoonagain (Fr) (Cape Cross {Ire}) by 2 1/2 lengths, with the returning G1 Prix de Diane heroine Senga (Blame) 3/4 of a length away in third. “We have had this in mind for her for a long time, ever since her run in the Oaks where we hoped for ease in the ground and it didn’t happen,” trainer Charlie Appleby commented. “The truth is, she didn’t stay a mile and a half at Epsom and she had run a very good race in the Nassau. With the ground like it is in Deauville at present, we were quite confident. She has had two solid races in a short period of time, so maybe she needs a break. She could possibly go for the [G1 Prix de l’] Opera [at Chantilly Oct. 1], but we also have in mind the [GI] QEII Cup at Keeneland.” Senga’s trainer Pascal Bary said, “It looks like she might have needed it and she was also a bit wide throughout, so we will stick to the plan which is the Opera followed by the [GI] Breeders’ Cup Fillies & Mares Turf.”

O-Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum; B-Darley (IRE); T-Roger Varian; J-Andrea Atzeni. £34,026. Lifetime Record: 7-5-1-0, £137,829.

With the G1 St Leger already looking a strong renewal, there was another potential big player entering the mix for that Doncaster Classic as Defoe upstaged some smart older horses. Dropped out in rear early by Andrea Atzeni, the 13-8 favourite who took the Listed Glasgow S. last time July 21 travelled easily to the front with two furlongs remaining. Going across Wall of Fire (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) soon after and sparking an inquiry in the process, he had 3/4 of a length over that rival at the line, with Frontiersman (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) 3 1/2 lengths back in third. “He’s a gentleman of a horse and is very laid-back–he travelled beautifully and got there fairly easily,” Atzeni said. “He definitely stays really well and although the Leger is turning out to be a good race, he’s there with a big chance.”

New Approach’s Hey Gaman Wins the Washington Singer

O-Sultan Ali; B-Rabbah Bloodstock Ltd (GB); T-James Tate; J-Martin Harley. £14,461. Lifetime Record: 6-3-1-0, £29,715.

Having dispensed a five-length beating to the dual listed runner-up Roussel (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in a six-furlong conditions event at Newmarket last time July 29, Hey Gaman led from pillar to post under Martin Harley to register a first black-type success. Working hard in front to battle the elements, the 10-3 second favourite had to contend with the 9-4 favourite Red Mist (GB) (Frankel {GB}) from the furlong pole but toughed it out to prevail by a short head, with 1 3/4 lengths back to Another Batt (GB) (Windsor Knot {Ire}) in third. “It was tough out there–the testing ground was one thing, but the headwind was another,” Harley said. “The second pressed me a long way down, so it was a good performance from a good horse. He’s got a big heart and it rode like a good race.” Trainer James Tate added, “He has always worked really well and although I was disappointed with a couple of his runs it turns out he likes it soft. There was nothing good enough to lead him today and I felt the second had the advantage of slipstreaming him so the best horse won. He’ll go for a seven-furlong group race next and we hope he’ll get a mile next year. I’d be nervous about running him on ground with no mention of soft in the description.”

+ROARING LION (c, 2, Kitten’s Joy–Vionnet {GISP-US, $175,140}, by Street Sense) broke in mid division and found a smooth rhythm there through halfway in this debut. Coaxed into contention approaching the final quarter mile, the 7-2 chance quickened smartly to lead passing the eighth pole and ran on strongly up the hill to comfortably account for Abandon Ship (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) by 1 3/4 lengths. Ghostwatch (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was the joint-second highest priced yearling at Tattersalls October Book 1 when knocked down for 2.1-million guineas last year, shaped with some promise and finished a further 1 3/4 lengths adrift in third. The $160,000 KEESEP yearling is the first foal out of GI Rodeo Drive S. third Vionnet (Street Sense), who is a daughter of GIII Las Cienegas H. and GIII Senator Ken Maddy H. heroine Cambiocorsa (Avenue of Flags), and therefore kin to four black-type performers headed by GII John C Mabee S. winner Moulin de Mougin (Curlin) and GII Royal Heroine Mile victress Schiaparelli (Ghostzapper). Vionnet has also produced a yearling colt by Medaglia d’Oro and was bred to More Than Ready this year. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $5,827. Video, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

By Sean Cronin

Eirene, who hit the board going six furlongs and three yards at Yarmouth in her June 13 unveiling, broke through over one yard shorter at Doncaster June 30 before running second over an extended six panels at Nottingham last time Aug. 3, and stepped forward to register a career high in this stakes bow. Restrained at the tail of the far-side group through swift early fractions, she made eyecatching headway from halfway to deliver her bid with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and ran on strongly once taking over at the eighth pole to win going away in impressive fashion. “She bumped into a decent sort [Sands of Mali] at Nottingham and it was very heavy that day over six furlongs,” explained rider Robert Winston. “She just got outstayed on the ground and the drop back to five on soft ground has helped her today. She has always been very highly thought of at home and today was a chance to prove herself in Listed company. I think the long-term goal could be the [Sept. 30 G1] Cheveley Park [S. at Newmarket] and she will get six furlongs when it’s not so soft.”

Eirene, half-sister to a yearling colt by Champs Elysees (GB) and a colt foal by Iffraaj (GB), becomes the second black-type winner for her freshman sire (by War Front) and is the leading performer out of Listed Radley S. second Za Za Zoom (GB) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}). Za Za Zoom is herself a full-sister to Listed Wentworth S. runner-up Highland Colori (Ire) and a half-sister to G3 Chipchase S. victor and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup third Genki (Ire) (Shinko Forest {Ire}).

Nudged into an outright lead with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, the 6-4 favourite was pushed out in the latter stages to comfortably best Mountain Guard (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) by 2 1/2 lengths.
