R1C5 : Prix Gontaut-Biron (Gr. 3)
First Sitting rit, Almanzor pleure

Deauville’s Assumption Day bank holiday fixture was the scene of a shock as last year’s champion Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) proved flat on his return and ended up a disappointing fifth. With the long odds-on favourite a shadow of his former self when never a factor and beaten 3 1/2 lengths, the race became an ordinary group 3 and it was left to the British raider First Sitting (GB) (Dansili {GB}) to capitalise under Gerald Mosse. Last seen finishing third in the G3 La Coupe at Chantilly June 17, the 7-1 shot tanked along in second early following the favourite’s pacemaker Zafiro (Fr) (Sageburg {Ire}) and after committing 500 metres out stayed on to beat Garlingari (Fr) (Linngari {Ire}) by 3/4 of a length, with Zafiro two lengths back in third. “All we were coming here for was to be second to Almanzor, but we thought if we ever had a chance to beat him today would be the day,” winning trainer Chris Wall said. “Gerald got him in a good position and gave him a perfect ride. He had not run so well in the past on firm ground, but today the good ground was perfect for him and he’s a very honest horse who gives his all. That’s a step up again and we’ll enter him in the [Sept. 30 G2] Prix Dollar at Chantilly and he is also entered in the Istanbul meeting, but I don’t know if it is right to go that far with him.”

Representing the English 2000 Guineas and Derby form, Eminent was allowed his head by Ryan Moore in this hot contest and rewarded that decision to outclass the domestic team including the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Brametot (Ire) (Rajsaman {Fr}). Quickly into a clear advantage tracked by fellow British raider Salouen (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) with the French colts all sitting and waiting initially, the 10-3 shot was still full of energy turning for home as his rivals all came under pressure from their jockeys. Despite the game effort of last year’s G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere runner-up Salouen, it was the Apr. 20 G3 Craven S. scorer who at last was able to demonstrate his class and hit the line with three lengths to spare over his compatriot, with 1 3/4 lengths back to the best of the home-trained representatives Avilius (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in third. If Almanzor was disappointing in the Gontaut-Biron, then fellow Rouget trainee Brametot was much more so here, finishing almost 10 lengths back in fifth. Again slowly away as he had been earlier this season, it ultimately did not matter as he was never able to land a blow. “That’s vindicated all our thoughts about him and he showed how good he is,” winning trainer Martyn Meade said. “There was no lead here and so we had no other tactic than to make it and it worked out on this particular occasion. He has come through some difficult times and has struggled a little bit, but today he bowled along and said this is me and what I can do. Beating a dual Classic winner in France is exciting and that’s what made this race so good.” Al Shaqab spokesman Rupert Pritchard-Gordon said of Brametot, “He broke even slower than usual and it was a truly-run race so it was impossible to get into the race. We will have to regroup and see how he is, but we can’t make plans at this stage. Let’s not forget he had two tough races in the Classics and although he needed a break, it might be that he is still not at the top of his game.”

Pursuing the Dream was a 150-1 sixth tackling Royal Ascot’s June 21 Queen Mary S. in her fourth start before running fourth in a July 5 Bath conditions event and lined up for this second black-type attempt coming back from a fifth in Newbury’s July 22 Weatherbys Super Sprint last time. Racing under a firm grip in rear until well beyond halfway, she eased into contention with 300 metres remaining and ran on strongly once stoked up at the eighth pole to claim a first win of any kind nearing the line. “It was a bit of a gamble to come for a Listed race with a maiden, but we knew we could win a maiden race at any time in England so we decided to take the shot and it paid off nicely,” explained winning trainer Jamie Osborne. “She’s a well-bred filly out of a Dubawi mare so she now has a future. We will consider all options for her next race and, as her limit is five furlongs, it might be the [Sept. 2 G3] Prix d’Arenberg [at Chantilly] or the [Sept. 22 Listed] Harry Rosebery [S. at Ayr].”
Pursuing the Dream, who is a half-sister to a yearling filly by Footstepsinthesand (GB) and a colt foal by Fast Company (Ire), becomes the third winner and first stakes scorer produced by a half-sister to Listed Firth of Clyde S. winner Femme Fatale (GB) (Fairy King) and MSW G2 Sun Chariot S. runner-up Foodbroker Fancy (Ire) (Halling). Femme Fatale is the granddam of G3 Coral Charge victor Extortionist (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) while Foodbroker Fancy is the dam of four black-type performers headed by GIII Long Island H. victress Dalvina (GB) (Grand Lodge) and Listed Lupe S. winner Soft Centre (GB) (Zafonic), who in turn produced G1 Nassau S. heroine Sultanina (GB) (New Approach {Ire}).

Capping a stellar day for Frankel, TDN Rising Star Lady Frankel was able to overcome a troubled trip and swoop late to book a ticket to bigger things. Given a rest since finishing third as the favourite for Maisons-Laffitte’s Listed Prix des Lilas June 10, the 9-2 shot waited in last early under Pierre-Charles Boudot and was travelling strongly when stopped in her run with just over a furlong remaining. Angled wide soon after, the half-sister to Lope de Vega (Ire) had just enough time to surge down the outer and deny a British-trained pattern-race treble on the afternoon as she headed Tisbutadream (Ire) (Dream Ahead) in the final strides. A short neck separated them at the line, with 3/4 of a length back to Limited Edition (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in third. “She needed a little break and had blossomed,” trainer Andre Fabtre commented. “She has run a good race today and I think she’ll stay further, so I would imagine she’ll come back next time in the [G1 Prix de l’] Opera [at Chantilly Oct. 1].”
Catalogue On-Line For Tattersalls October Book 1
Group 1 globetrotter Highland Reel was purchased at Book 1 in 2013 | Racing Post
By Daithi Harvey
Bloodstock professionals will have no shortage of reading material this week with the release of the catalogue for Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The catalogue, which contains 502 lots can be accessed here and the sale will take place over three days from 3-5 Oct. The sale has grown exponentially since 2010 reaching an all time high last year when posting an aggregate of just over 88,000,000 gns and if the pedigrees on offer this year are anything to go by it would seem Tattersalls are in for another stellar auction. A further popular feature of the sale is the £25,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus scheme for which every lot is eligible.
Commenting on the catalogue release Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said, “We felt that last year’s October Book 1 was a bit special, but the 2017 renewal looks to have raised the bar again. There are a huge number of own or half-brothers and sisters to Group and Listed winners in the catalogue, but equally impressive is that nearly 150 of the 502 yearlings are out of Group and Listed winning mares, including many of the truly outstanding racemares of our time, and a further 64 are out of Group and Listed placed mares. An extra dimension is also added by the five beautifully bred yearlings which are part of the once in a generation Ballymacoll Dispersal at Tattersalls, and of course the enormously popular £25,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus will again ensure that buyers have the chance of winning unprecedented prize money by purchasing at Europe’s premier yearling sale.”
As alluded to above it is impossible to focus on just a few of the choice lots given the proliferation of some of the finest pedigrees in the stud book but from a sires point of view there are 30 offerings by Dubawi (GB), 21 by Galileo (Ire) and 14 by Frankel (GB). Picking one of each sire’s progeny among many others that are worthy of mention; lot 451, Dubawi’s son of Ever Rigg (GB) (Dubai Destination) who is a full-brother to a champion in Postponed (Ire) but also a half-brother to recent Group 3 winner God Given (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}); lot 502 from Camas Park is a Galileo full-brother to the top class international Ballydoyle runners Highland Reel (Ire) and Idaho (Ire); lot 424, a Frankel filly offered by Highclere Stud out of Debonnaire (GB) (Anabaa), making her a half-sister to Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}), a multiple Group 1 winner of over £2,000,000 in Australia.
The first yearlings will also be offered from several great race-mares from recent years including; lot 222, a colt out of G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. winner Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}); lot 332, a colt out of Ambivalent (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) who won the G1 Pretty Polly S. for Roger Varian; lot 251 from the 2016 co-sale topping Norris Bloodstock team, a colt by Dansili (GB) out of G1 Nassau S. winner Sultanina (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), while 2013 GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Dank (GB) (Dansili {GB}) is represented by lot 418, a filly, already named Gloam (GB).
In total, the catalogue features own or half-brothers and sisters to 41 Group 1 and Classic winners and 273 Group/Listed winners. All the leading sires are well represented with Dark Angel (Ire) and Sea The Stars (Ire) having 29 apiece, Kodiac (GB) and Invincible Spirit (Ire) with 21 and 20 respectively, Iffraaj (GB) has 17 catalogued, while Acclamation (GB), Nathaniel (Ire) and Pour Moi (Ire), sire of Derby winner Wings Of Eagles (Fr), have three, four and one respectively. Further interest will be provided by the progeny of some interesting first crop sires with 11 freshmen represented by a total of 93 yearlings led by the champion duo of Coolmore’s dual Derby winner Australia (GB) and Juddmonte’s brilliant miler Kingman (GB) who have 20 and 25 yearlings catalogued respectively. Toronado (Ire), who will return to his owner’s Haras de Bouquetot for 2018 has 10 from his first crop while Darley’s multiple Group 1 winning sprinter Slade Power (GB) is represented by nine yearlings.
Lady Eli to Sell At Keeneland November
Lady Eli | Sarah K Andrew
Five-time Grade I-winning multi-millionaire and Breeders’ Cup champion Lady Eli (Divine Park–Sacre Coeur, by Saint Ballado) will be offered for sale by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in their Keeneland November Breeding Stock consignment.
“It is an honor and a privilege to consign a mare of the caliber of Lady Eli,” said John G. Sikura, President of Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms. “Not only is she uniquely accomplished, winning Grade I races at 2, 3, 4, and 5, but her courage exemplifies what we love about Thoroughbreds. She is class personified and the best of the best. I hope she can win another Breeders’ Cup, as well as the Eclipse Award she richly deserves.”
A $160,000 Keeneland September yearling and $160,000 Keeneland April 2-year-old, Lady Eli broke her maiden first time out at Saratoga and capped off an undefeated juvenile season with an impressive victory in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf where she defeated four Grade I performers and was later named an Eclipse finalist.
At three, Lady Eli defeated top fillies Miss Temple City (Temple City) and Sunset Glow (Exchange Rate) in the GIII Appalachian S. at Keeneland and added an authoritative victory over an international field in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational by 2 3/4 widening lengths before contracting, and–ultimately–overcoming a much publicized battle with laminitis.
Lady Eli established herself as one of the favorites for the 2016 GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, returning to the winner’s circle with an impressive victory in the GI Flower Bowl S. at Belmont, but was nosed out in the final jump at Santa Anita.
Kept in training for a 5-year-old campaign, Lady Eli dropped a narrow decision in her seasonal return in Keeneland’s GI Jenny Wiley S., but has since bounced back to win the GI Gamely S. (video) while forced to race atypically handy to the pace, and Saratoga’s GI Diana S. (video). First or second in all 12 of her career starts, Lady Eli has amassed earnings of $2,719,800 and is pointing for a return to the Filly and Mare Turf.
“We have been incredibly fortunate to be a part of the story of Lady Eli. She has given us, our friends, and our families the thrill of a lifetime through her five Grade I wins,” said partners Sol Kumin and Jay Hanley in a statement. “However, the true joy of owning Lady Eli has been witnessing her impact on the multitude of industry members, racing fans and general public. She has inspired the masses through her enormous heart and determination to persevere in the face of adversity. She is a racing icon and an ambassador for this sport that cannot be replicated. We thank all those that worked so hard to raise, nurture and heal her over her lengthy career. She is truly the horse of a lifetime.”
A half-sister to MGSW Bizzy Caroline (Afleet Alex), Lady Eli is out of a winning half-sister to GSW Jacodra’s Devil (Devil’s Bag) and hails from the female family of Grade II-winning juvenile filly Changing Ways (Time For a Change), GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Tejano Run (Tejano) and MG1SW Alwuhush.
“The brilliant Lady Eli has a strong connection to Keeneland, where she sold twice,” said Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston. “It’s an honor for Keeneland to have the opportunity to feature her at our upcoming November Breeding Stock Sale.”
“I think she’s one of the all-time great turf mares,” added trainer Chad Brown.

Sorprese in Francia.
