   Saddling four as he sought an astounding 16th renewal of The Curragh’s G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. since 1998, Aidan O’Brien for once did not provide the favourite but still managed to score with the June 22 G2 Norfolk S. winner Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy). Settled just off the solid early pace by Ryan Moore, the 2-1 second favourite gained the lead approaching the furlong pole and stayed on strongly as the 15-8 market leader Beckford (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) bore down on him late. At the line, the imposing bay had a half length to spare over that previously unbeaten rival, with 1 1/2 lengths back to Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War) in third. “He travels very well and quickens very well–even though he is a big, powerful horse he has a lot of speed,” the Ballydoyle trainer said. “With every run he is coming forward and getting better. He has a great mind and every week he is progressing.”

   Showing what an improving force she was when winning the July 22 Listed Aphrodite S. at Newmarket, God Given was able to lead from pillar-to-post and register an authoritative success in this hotter contest to point the way to some big autumn targets. Always happy on the front end under Jamie Spencer, the 47-10 shot who is a half-sister to Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) kicked decisively three out and despite wandering left in the straight was always holding the outsider Calayana (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}) and hit the line with 1 3/4 lengths to spare over that Aga Khan representative, with Lady Montdore (Medaglia d’Oro) a neck behind in third. “I knew she wouldn’t be a two-year-old, so what she did at two was promising enough to suggest she could run in stakes races at three and she has done with success now,” trainer Luca Cumani said. “She is progressing regularly and is a gorgeous-looking filly whose long-term goal is the [G1 British Champions] Fillies and Mares [S. at Ascot Oct. 21]. In between, she could come back to France for the [G1 Prix] Vermeille [at Chantilly Sept. 10]. She goes on good ground, but is better on this ground and might have it more in the second part of the season. I have to thank the owner, as this is the first horse I have trained for him and he sent me her as I had just had Postponed taken away from me, which is wonderful of him.”

   With four listed wins under his belt, last year’s G1 Prix de l’Abbaye runner-up Washington DC needed a pattern race on his resume and it duly came here as Ryan Moore delivered him late to beat Cougar Mountain (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Held up early in customary fashion, the 11-4 favourite swooped late to overhaul that stablemate in the final 50 yards and win by a half length, with Gordon Lord Byron (Ire) (Byron {GB}) the same margin behind in third.

   Successful in the G2 Gerling-Preis at Cologne May 7 and Hamburg’s G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis July 1, Dschingis Secret upstaged the Godolphin pair Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy) and Racing History (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) to keep this prize at home. Keen in the hands of Adrie de Vries in a share of second early, the 14-5 second favourite overhauled the long-time leader and 7-5 favourite Hawkbill a furlong out en route to a length success, with Racing History 3 1/2 lengths away in third.

MENDELSSOHN (c, 2, Scat Daddy—Leslie’s Lady, by Tricky Creek), the $3million KEESEP half-brother to the 10-times grade one winner Beholder (Henny Hughes) and the GI Hollywood Futurity-winning sire Into Mischief who was eighth on debut over seven furlongs here July 15, was sent to the lead after the initial yards. Veering markedly left from the furlong pole, the 5-4 favourite had enough in reserve to score by a length from Andesh (Ire) (Medicean {GB}). “He was green here the first day, but was still very green here,” Aidan O’Brien said. “He’ll probably take another run or two before he starts to click into gear mentally, but Ryan was very happy with him. He was looking at everything, but he’s a horse who notices everything and he’s a bit babyish. Coming up there in front would have done him the world of good and hopefully he’ll progress. In an ideal world, we’d prefer not to go into a stakes race next if he is that green and he could go a level lower at the minute. He’s a lovely big colt and everything is right with him.” Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, €11,704.

Mythical Magic, who acted coltish during the preliminaries before winning his July 28 debut going six furlongs at Ascot last time, had his mind very much on the job in hand here to usurp fellow Godolphin colourbearer and TDN Rising Star Cascadian for a career high. Breaking well to seize control racing in the centre of the track, he was stoked up passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly under a drive inside the final 150 metres to hold on in ultimately snug fashion. “He is an imposing colt who won very well first time out at Ascot and confirmed his quality today,” said trainer Charlie Appleby. “He had no problem with the [soft] ground and I think it was a good race with two nice colts finishing first and second. We are thinking about going for the [Oct. 14 G1] Dewhurst [S. at Newmarket] with him and will probably run once more beforehand. We’ll see how he comes out of this before formulating a plan and, as he’s such a big colt, he might still be a little weak at this stage of his career.”

   Mythical Magic is the second black-type scorer produced by Mythie (Fr) (Octagonal {NZ}) and he is a half-brother to G3 Nell Gwyn S. victress Esentepe (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Invincible Spirit (Ire). Mythie is a winning half to Listed Prix Saraca winner Mytographie (Fr) (Anabaa), herself the dam of Listed Prix de Pontarme victor Mutin (Fr) (Kentucky Dynamite), from a family which includes stakes-winning GI Sword Dancer Invitational third L’Hermine (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}).

   Third in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket May 6 and two-lengths second to Taareef (Kitten’s Joy) off a subsequent break in the G3 Prix Messidor at Maisons-Laffitte July 16, Al Shaqab Racing’s Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) got the group 1 success that had looked a formality in Deauville’s Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard – Jacques le Marois. Breaking far better than usual under Frankie Dettori, the 4-1 shot tracked the 17-10 favourite Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) and looked to be coming off second best approaching the final furlong as the leader’s rider Christophe Soumillon had still to resort to the whip. It was only when his stablemate Inns of Court (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) emerged on his right flank to squeeze him into a Godolphin sandwich that the highly talented bay responded with a late surge to thrust his nose in front of the latter on the line and prevail by a short head, with Thunder Snow a short neck away in third. In doing so, he was providing Andre Fabre with a seventh renewal, bringing him alongside the great Francois Boutin on the all-time record.

America: #Permian perde la vita nelle Secretariat Stakes. A Beach Patrol il Million con Fanciful Angel per Marco Botti 2°

 

 

Il fine settimana americano si è tinto di nero a causa di un gravissimo infortunio occorso a Permian (Teofilo), infortunatosi gravemente nelle ultime fasi delle Secretariat Stakes G1 tanto da dover esser sottoposto ad eutanasia. Il 3 anni di Mark Johnston, al quale non è mai stato risparmiato un impegno in questo 2017, ha pagato forse lo stress degli impegni gravosi in molti ambiti essendo alla 8° uscita di questo 2017 correndo sempre al massimo delle sue potenzialità. Dispiace molto per un lottatore vero, scomparso sul campo, vincitore di 6 delle 14 corse disputate. Errore umano? Forse. Ci resta il ricordo di averlo giocato da inizio 2017 e fino al Grand Prix de Paris G1, con palmares interessante e vittoria nelle Dante Stakes G2, King Edward G2 e piazzamento appunto a Parigi in G1 prima della inspiegabile trasferta americana. A farne le spese, in maniera meno fatale, è stato anche William Buick ricoverato in ospedale presso il Northwest Community Hospital, con conseguenza di aver riportato la frattura della vertebra T12. A breve sapremo di più sul suo stato di salute ma i medici sembrano confidenti sul futuro…

Detto questo, va commentato il risultato sportivo con la vittoria americana andata ad Oscar Performance per Brian Lynch con Jose Ortiz in sella. Oscar è certamente il miglior 3 anni in erba in America e figlio dello stallone certezza della superficie oltreoceano cioè quel Kitten’s Joy (El Prado) che abbiamo conosciuto bene anche in Europa. Oscar è alla terza vittoria consecutiva dopo aver vinto a Belmont l’Invitational Derby G1. A contribuire a questo successo la scarsezza dei rivali europei, tanto che secondo è giunto Taj Mahal (Galileo), al limite della categoria in ogni impegno Classico in Europa. Ma la corsa più importante della giornata a Chicago era l’Arlington Million XXXV Stakes G1, ancora vinto dagli Americani grazie a Beach Patrol(Lemon Drop Kid), nella foto, che ha completato una missione ed un double storico vincendo la massima prova locale a 4 anni, un anno dopo aver vinto le Secretariat Stakes G1 quando aveva tre anni. Il cavallo di Chad Brown con Joel Rosario in sella, e di proprietà di James Covello, Sheep Pond Partners & Head Of Plains Partners, non vinceva dallo scorso anno ma piazzandosi spesso nel corso della stagione. Per vincere bastava tornare sul luogo del delitto preferito. Il figlio di Lemon Drop Kid (Kingmambo) è svettato sul duo europeo formato da Fanciful Angel (Dark Angel) con Daniel Muscutt in sella per Marco e Lucie Botti ai quali vanno i nostri complimenti, e Deauville (Galileo), quello che meglio poteva rappresentare la forma europea, resistito al terzo dopo aver anticipato la fuga e venendo acciuffato nelle fasi finali. IL VIDEO QUI. IL RISULTATO COMPLETO QUI.

Lo stesso team dell’Arlington Million ha festeggiato due volte grazie a Dacita (Scat Daddy) vincitrice del suo secondo G1 americano dopo la carriera cilena (condita con 4 G1), con l’affermazione nelle Beverly D Stakes G1 regalando a Chad Brown la quarta vittoria in questa corsa. La figlia di Scat Daddy (Johannesburg), 6 anni, ha battuto la favorita Grand Jete (Dansili), sempre per Chad Brown, e la argentina Dona Bruja(Storm Embrujado).
