Berry plays starring role as Great Britain and Ireland rule
Fran Berry continued his love affair with the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on Saturday, maintaining his unbeaten record in the competition as part of the winning team for the third time.
For good measure, the Irishman finished the day as leading rider, for which he was awarded the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle as the day’s leading points scorer.
Berry made a successful Shergar Cup debut in 2010, in the process winning the Silver Saddle for a first time when part of an Ireland-only team. He was also part of the winning Irish team the following year.

Saturday was his first appearance since, having been ushered off the substitutes bench to replace the absent Ryan Moore, and he played a starring role once more for the Great Britain and Ireland team, who edged out the Rest of the World and Europe thanks to Berry’s last-race win on Golden Apollo.
“It’s been a fantastic day and I’m very thankful to get the call up,” said Berry, who combined with captain Jamie Spencer and Hong Kong-based Neil Callan.
“To ride a couple of winners is fantastic and to win the Silver Saddle is even better. You hope to ride one winner but this is great.”
The first of Berry’s two winners came on the Mick Quinn-trained Great Hall in the Challenge, but it was the last winner, aboard the Tim Easterby-trained Golden Apollo, that brought a punch of the air from the rider crossing the line.
He added: “It was such a tight competition and any one of three teams could have won it, so to hold on in the last was great.
“It’s been a lucky competition for me. I’ve been here three times and it’s always gone well and I’m just grateful for the opportunity. It’s a big day and you get a kick out of it – you work hard all week but it’s all about Saturday winners.
“It’s a full house and outside of Royal Ascot it’s the biggest crowd they get. It’s a big buzz.”
Spencer had got his side off to a flyer in the opener, the Dash, on the Dean Ivory-trained Stake Acclaim, in the process notching his 2,000th winner on the Flat in Britain.
“To be the winning team is great,” said Spencer. “It all went right and the team’s done a great job. The last race went well and that’s got us over the line.”
It was all to play for heading into the sixth and final race with Great Britain and Ireland holding a five-point lead over Europe, with the Rest of the World a further five points adrift and still in contention.
But along with Berry winning the race, Spencer finished third on Megan Lily, helping to put clear water between themselves and their rivals. The Rest of the World edged second by just three points from Europe, with the the Girls last of four after a disappointing day.
The Ride of the Day award went to Holland’s Adrie de Vries for his stylish effort on Euchen Glen, who came from last to first to win the Stayers.

Sea of Grace was transferred from John Oxx to William Haggas after bagging two of three juvenile starts, including a score in The Curragh’s Aug. 28 G3 Flame of Tara S., and opened this term with a fifth in Newmarket’s Apr. 19 G3 Nell Gwyn S. before running second in Deauville’s May 13 G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and fourth in the July 14 G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket last time. Steadied at the tail of the six-runner field from the outset of this lesser spot, she cruised into contention on the bridle with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and quickened smartly under whipless coaxing in the closing stages to easily outpoint overmatched rivals for a second black-type success. “She was entitled to do that as she was down in grade and really enjoys that [soft] ground,” said rider Andrea Atzeni. “That’s the second time I’ve ridden her and she was much more relaxed this time. It was a bit like a piece of work, she settled well and picked them up no bother. You need them to settle in that ground as it makes it so much easier. That will set her up for some nice races in the autumn, but she needs that ground.”
Sea of Grace is the leading performer out of Lady Vettoria (Fr) (Vettori {Ire}), herself a winning half-sister to MGSP Cougar Bay (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}), and she is a half-sister to Listed Criterium di Pisa third Pepparone (Ire) (Stormy River {Fr}), a yearling colt by Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) and a colt foal by Ruler of the World (Ire). Showing marked ability when overcoming a tardy start to win on debut in a six-furlong novice contest May 20 on the Rowley Mile at which her second dam Natagora enjoyed her finest hours in the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Cheveley Park S., Tajaanus was tried in the Listed Empress Fillies’ S. over the same trip on this course July 1. Suffering interference and still green when sixth there, the homebred was moved up in distance and showed battling qualities to land the Listed Star S. over seven at Sandown July 27. Building on that effort and much more professional here, the bay was able to emerge on top of a brigade of potentially smart fillies in this competitive renewal. Kept stand’s side by Dane O’Neill as all bar one of her rivals went up the centre led by Juliet Capulet, she began to assert from that rival passing the two-furlong pole as the runners spread across the track. Toughing it out up the hill as Dance Diva (GB) (Mayson {GB}), the favourite Poetic Charm (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Capla Temptress all had a shot at the target, she emerged clear-best in a race in which it played to be handy.
Trainer Richard Hannon is eyeing the 2018 Classics now. “She has done nothing wrong all year. She is a lovely, tough filly with a great attitude,” he said. “She was very unlucky here against Dance Diva when she couldn’t get a run in the Listed race. That’s only her fourth run and she has won three of them now. She has been a star. We will probably have a look at the [G2] Rockfel and also the [G1] Fillies’ Mile [on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Sept. 29 and Oct. 13]. It’s always a pretty good race and I managed to get Sky Lantern beaten in this and she won the Guineas. I am very pleased for Sheikh Hamdan as she is a homebred by his stallion out of his mare. I think she will get as far as you like, as she is very willing and doesn’t pull. She does pretty much what you want. She has got loads of ability. Of course at this stage you would like to say she is Guineas filly, but there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and then. We will treat her like a Guineas filly until she proves otherwise.”
Natagora, who was sold privately to Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the culmination of her 3-year-old campaign, has two black-type performers to her credit including Rayaheen’s half-sister Raaqy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who was third in the Listed Star S. that this filly won in 2015. Her 3-year-old colt Mankib (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) was thought good enough by Freddy Head to run in this year’s G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and was not disgraced in eighth. From the family of the 1988 G1 Prix de Diane heroine and champion Resless Kara (Fr) (Akarad {Fr}), the dam’s second foal is a yearling colt by Intikhab.

Frankuus, who annexed last term’s G3 Prix de Conde before running eighth in a stellar renewal of the Oct. 30 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, opened his sophomore campaign with a third in Sandown’s Apr. 28 G3 Classic Trial and continued his winless streak when fourth in the May 13 Listed Lingfield Derby Trial and eighth in the June 23 G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot. Fourth next time in Sandown’s July 7 Listed Gala S., he went postward coming off a second in Hamilton’s July 21 Listed Glasgow S. and led from the outset. Holding sway throughout, the grey poached a decisive lead approaching the final quarter mile and kept on resolutely under late urging to hold Mount Logan (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) for a third black-type score. “I thought he was stuck between two stools in that he wasn’t quite top class, but was too high for handicaps,” explained winning trainer Mark Johnston after claimimg a third success in the event. “He’s been running good races, but last time was definitely his best run of the season. On paper he had a bit to find today, but we knew he liked the track as he won here last year. He had conditions in his favour and handles cut in the ground. All horses like good ground, but not all appreciate some give. I will have to go back and think about what to do next, but it would be nice to get another Group win out of him because it’s been frustrating for his owners.”
Frankuus is a half-brother to G3 Prix Thomas Bryon victor and G1 Criterium International third Us Law (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), the 2-year-old filly Sensory (Ire) (Dream Ahead) and a yearling filly by Dream Ahead. His second dam is G1 Phoenix S.-winning Irish highweight Pharaoh’s Delight (Ire) (Fairy King), who also hit the board in a further four top-level contests, and she is also the granddam of GI Breeders’ Cup Turf and GI Man o’ War S.-winning sire Red Rocks (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Verso le Juddmonte International Stakes di York. Conferme da Churchill, Barney Roy ed Ulysses

Dal 24 al 26 Agosto prenderà luogo il prestigioso Ebor Meeting di York, che si preannuncia a dir poco stellare. In programma, nella 4 giorni, nell’ordine le Juddmonte International G1 il mercoledì, le Darley Yorkshire Oaks G1 il giovedì, le Nunthorpe Stakes G1 il venerdì ed il Betfred Ebor Handicap il sabato.
Le prime conferme sono arrivate nella mattinata di martedì per le Juddmonte International Stakes che saranno molto belle in quanto è prevista la partecipazione del duplice campione Classico Churchill(Galileo), out nelle Sussex Stakes G1 causa terreno soffice, che affronterà l’allungamento della distanza fino ai tipici 2080 metri di York con in palio £1 milione. A svelarlo Aidan O’Brien che ha dichiarato come ci fosse la possibilità dopo Goodwood di correre il Jacques Le Marois G1 di domenica a Deauville, ma di aver ripensato all’eventualità di partecipare preferendo l’Ebor Meeting per il suo.
Churchill, a questo punto, dovrà rifarsi della sconfitta nelle St James G1 e contro avrà di nuovo Barney Roy(Excelebration) che dopo la vittoria di Ascot è giunto secondo nelle Eclipse di Sandown. Al momento il betting vede favorito proprio il Godolphin a 3/1. Ci sarà anche Ulysses (Galileo), vincitore a Sandown e poi secondo nelle King George G1 vinte da Enable, con quest’ultima che invece correrà la Yorkshire Oaks come ultima tappa estiva prima della preparazione per l’Arc de Triomphe.
A York ci saranno probabilmente anche altri Coolmoriani, ed è possibile siano tanto Highland Reel, quanto Winter che Cliffs Of Moher, tutti però saliti di almeno un punticino nelle quote quando si è saputo che correrà il compagno Churchill. Se York ride Deauville invece piange perchè perderà nel Le Marois tre pesanti candidati, se aggiungiamo anche Le Brivido (Siyouni) che ha in agenda il Prix du Moulin G1 del mese prossimo, a causa di un contrattempo da risolvere. Al momento nel Le Marois il favorito è Ribchester (Iffraaj) mentre è salita prepotente la candidatura di Al Wukair (Dream Ahead), al dir la verità non troppo convincente nel periodo. Ma Ribchester non è ancora sicuro, per questo il più accreditato ad un ruolo di contender è proprio per il portacolori dell’Al Shaqab che dopo le 2000 Ghinee ha affrontato gli anziani sul miglio in pista dritta, perdendo la partenza, recuperando molto, ma e finendo discretamente. Ma Fabre non si discute.
Tornando per un attimo su Aidan O’Brien, in una intervista nella quale ha annunciato i programmi di Churchill ha parlato anche di Caravaggio(Scat Daddy) uscito ancora sconfitto nel Maurice De Gheest dopo la July Cup. Sulle prime ha detto che il cavallo era stanco, accollandosi le colpe di un training severo dopo Ascot, mentre più a freddo (perchè i cavalli parlano solo nei giorni successivi, difficilmente prima) ha dichiarato che è tornato da Deauville malconcio e dolorante, forse a causa di una errata ferratura per la quale si sta cercando di rimediare. Dopo quello che è successo a Newmarket e Deauville, ha aggiunto, pare chiaro che non è il caso di andare in Australia a correre la Everest Cup G1 in Ottobre, la corsa più ricca al mondo in erba.
