Ballet Shoes improved off a June 28 debut fifth going six panels at Naas to claim a one-mile maiden win at The Curragh last time July 29, and stepped forward once again to register a career high in this black-type bow. Stalking the pace in second after leading through part of the early exchanges, she was sent wide to race on the stands’ side off the home turn and easily asserted under mild coaxing inside the final quarter mile to win with plenty in hand. At the line, the 11-4 chance had 3 1/2 lengths to spare over Lethal Steps (GB) (Lethal Force {Ire}) with a 1 3/4 lengths back to Mattymolls Gaga (Ire) (Dragon Pulse {Ire}) in third.
Black Caviar’s Daughter a Winner at Geelong
3rd at GLN, A$25k | Mdn | (1000m) | Winner: Oscietra (Aus), f, 3 by Exceed and Excel (Aus) |
Oscietra | Racing and Sports
Three-year-old filly Oscietra (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), the first foal from undefeated champion Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}), displayed some of her mother’s trademark speed to graduate at second asking over the Geelong synthetic surface on Friday. Drawn gate four, Oscietra–sent off the $2.20 (6-5) second favourite–was first to break the line and led, albeit narrowly, into the turn in the 1000m test. They stacked up to her outside to deliver their challenges, but Oscietra accelerated off the home corner and never looked like losing. The winning margin was 1 3/4 lengths (video). Trained by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig of Lindsay Park for a partnership including breeder Neil Werrett, a part-owner of Black Caviar, Oscietra was a debut third in a 1000m Flemington maiden on New Year’s Day. The winner of that race was Limestone (Aus) (Helmet {Aus}), who won the G3 Blue Diamond Preview next out and was second in the G2 Blue Diamond Prelude. Oscietra, named for a type of prized caviar, had turned in a couple of smart trials prior to Friday’s return to the races. Black Caviar is the dam of the 2-year-old colt Prince of Caviar (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}), a yearling Snitzel (Aus) filly and is due to More Than Ready in 2017.
“It was a great relief for her to win today,” Werrett told Racing.com. “David’s got her in great order. She came out and did what we expected first race. I expect over the spring that she’ll develop.”
“I’m sure David’s going to take her easily through her grades,” Werrett said. “He’ll pick out a race at Moonee Valley in three weeks’ time, I think. It’s very special; it was a great relief for the whole team here. It’s been a while since she raced on New Year’s Day. She’s very fit; David spent a lot of time getting her ready, so we’re very relieved.
Werrett also said Prince of Caviar would join the Lindsay Park stable in three to four weeks.
Son Of Turbulent Descent Wins the Ballyroan

Spanish Steps (blue cap) | Racing Post

Seamie Heffernan is lethal on the lead, as he has proven on more than one occasion on the likes of Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and on another accomplished son of Galileo in Cape Blanco (Ire) at this track’s feature G1 Irish Champion S. in 2010. Once again, he was able to grab an early advantage which put his mount Spanish Steps in a commanding position before allowing him to level out. As stablemate Johannes Vermeer began to whittle away at his margin in the straight, the bay was able to find more and reward a perfectly-judged ride. This was a marked move forward for the winner, who had got off the mark at the fourth attempt by 10 lengths over an extended nine furlongs at Gowran Park June 25 before finishing last of nine in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris at Saint-Cloud July 14.
Aidan O’Brien is looking at a quick return to the races for Spanish Steps and said, “We always liked him and felt he would be comfortable at a mile and a half. We always thought he would be comfortable on nice ground. We were going to go to Goodwood and then the ground changed. He’s a bit green and babyish, but is a good colt. Seamie was happy to go along and we would see if Johannes Vermeer was able to pick him up. He was getting a lot of weight. Seamie gave him a very good ride. He was left alone in front and was gone turning in. He could go for the [G2 Great] Voltigeur [S. Aug. 23] next at York. Johannes Vermeer could go down to Australia for a race there.”
The winner is the first foal out of Turbulent Descent, who remarkably won the GI Ballerina S., GI Hollywood Starlet S., GI Santa Anita Oaks and GI Test S. as well as the GII Beaumont S. and finished runner-up in the GI Acorn S. and GI Las Virgenes S. for Mike Puype and Todd Pletcher. Led out unsold in foal to War Front at $2.45million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Sale in 2014, she produced a filly by that sire who is now two and also has a yearling full-brother to Spanish Steps. Like fellow top-level winning distaffers Music Show (Ire) (Noverre) and Swift Temper (Giant’s Causeway), she is descended from the GI Vanity Invitational H., GI Ashland S. and GI Hollywood Oaks heroine Gorgeous (Slew o’ Gold).

DUBHE (GB) (c, 2, Dubawi {Ire}–Great Heavens {GB} {Hwt. 3yo Filly-Eng at 11-14f, G1SW-Ire & GSW-Eng, $410,037}, by by Galileo {Ire}), a son of the 2012 G1 Irish Oaks heroine Great Heavens from the family of Nathaniel (Ire) who was fourth on debut over seven furlongs at Newbury July 21, was sent to the lead from the outset. Stretching his rivals from before two out, the 8-11 favourite stayed on to secure a straightforward 2 1/4-length success from Nuits St Georges (Ire) (Mount Nelson {GB}). “There is loads of stamina in his pedigree and he showed us that at Newbury,” jockey William Buick said. “He’s a very likeable horse and he did it well, but he’s a next-year project on pedigree and it looks that way in his racing too. He was professional and stuck his head down and stayed on well–he didn’t mind that ground. He has always seemed like a sleepy horse, so we’ve opened up a door for him now and he knows he’s a racehorse.” Great Heavens, who also captured the G2 Lancashire Oaks prior to her highlight in the Curragh Classic, is a daughter of the formidable producer Magnificient Style (Silver Hawk), who is also responsible for the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. and G1 Eclipse S.-winning sire Nathaniel (Ire), G2 Yorkshire Cup Hero Percussionist (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and G1 Fillies Mile and G2 Lancashire Oaks scorer Playful Act (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells). Also second in the G1 Irish Oaks, she went on to produce three black-type performers headed by the GIII Orchid S. winner Anjaz (Street Cry {Ire}) and Giants Play (Giant’s Causeway) who took the GII New York S. Great Heavens has a yearling colt by Dansili (GB) named Great Bear (GB) and a foal full-sister to the winner named Sun Bear (GB). Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $5,671. Video, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

By Cheveley Park’s resident Medicean and a full-sister to one of his chief money-spinners in the GII King Edward S., GII Connaught Cup and GII Play the King S. winner Dimension (GB), MGSW-Can, SW & GSP-US, $568,274, Verandah was sent off the 5-1 joint-second favourite and broke slowly before racing lazily in rear as Robert Tart strove to get her engaged. Once under cover against the rail, the homebred travelled kindly and when asked at the top of the straight produced an electric change of gear to strike the front 1 1/2 furlongs out. Eased heavily in the last 75 yards, the bay who is also a half-sister to the operation’s 2009 G2 Windsor Forest S. winner and 2008 G1 1000 Guineas runner-up Spacious (GB) (Nayef), Hwt. Older Mare-Ire at 7-9 1/2f, MGSW & MG1SP-Eng, G1SP-Ire, $695,671, still enjoyed a two-length advantage over Fille de Reve (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) who denied the winner’s stablemate West Palm Beach (Ire) (Scat Daddy) second by a short head. Spacious was herself an impressive four-length winner on her juvenile debut prior to taking the G2 May Hill S. and her next start was when beaten a half-length in the 2008 Newmarket Classic by Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}). Placed on four more occasions at the highest level, she is related to the two smart fellow James Fanshawe-trained mares in Portal (GB) (Hernando {Fr}), who was third in the G2 Lancashire Oaks, and Ice Palace (GB) (Polar Falcon). The former went on to produce the G3 Bahrain Trophy and G3 Gordon S. runner-up Windshear (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), while the latter was responsible for the dual listed scorer Queen of Ice (GB) (Selkirk). Palatial, who was a four-time winner and just shy of listed class, also has a yearling filly by Dutch Art (GB) named Edifice (GB). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, £4,528. Bloodstock agent Kerri Radcliffe has been as prominent as any buyer over the course of the two days of selling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearlings Sale, and she signed for her first seven-figure horse Tuesday. Hip 186, a Gainesway-consigned son of 2013 GI Kentucky Derby hero Orb managed to breach that threshold, selling to Radcliffe for an even $1 million to equal Monday’s top price. A Mar. 28 foal, the chestnut is the first foal from Flashy American (Flashy Bull), a Grade III winner and third in the GI Delaware Oaks, who was purchased by Blue Sky Stable carrying the Orb colt in utero for $395,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. Both mare and foal were reoffered at FTKNOV last year, Flashy American selling in foal to Tapit to Brushwood Farm for $950,000, while her Orb colt fetched $310,000 from Davant Latham. Hip 186 also hails from the family of the talented I’m Already Sexy (Ready’s Image). Radcliffe has now signed for six horses for gross receipts just shy of $4 million.
