Rich History
Claytonhotelgalway.ie Handicap
7.05 Galway, Monday
A half-brother to Free Eagle, Sapphire and Custom Cut, this son of Dubawi has been sent off at odds of 11-2 or shorter for all four of his starts in maidens. He has traded at in-running lows of 3.2, 2.22, 1.5 and 2.12 despite having form figures of 6868. Those four outings were over trips ranging from 1m to 1m2f and he appears to be crying out for a shorter trip. He gets that here for his first handicap and a mark of 76 could be exploited. This Moyglare-owned colt could kickstart Dermot Weld’s revival.

Lagostovegas
Connacht Hotel (QR) Handicap
7.40 Galway, Monday
A fine dual-purpose mare, Lagostovegas has decent winter form to her name and will be one horse who will definitely act on the likely soft going at Galway. She couldn’t land a blow in this qualified riders’ handicap last season off just 76, but she won extremely well on just her second start for the champion trainer Willie Mullins at Killarney. That performance suggested she should be backed wherever she lines up next, and even off 89 she looks worth a decent wager in the feature race on the Monday at Ballybrit. Patrick Mullins takes the ride.
Brian Sheerin

Librisa Breeze
Qatar Lennox Stakes
3.00 Goodwood, Tuesday
Despite coming up short on the three occasions he has stepped out of handicap company, it’s surely only a matter a time before Dean Ivory’s talented grey makes his mark in Group races. To be fair, he found 6f inadequate on his last two starts, including when finishing well for fourth in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot on his reappearance. That appeared to confirm he is as good as ever and, while he probably wouldn’t have to improve on that in this lesser contest, there is likely to be a good deal more to come from him back over 7f – the distance of his last two wins. There are no ground issues either.
Pietro Innocenzi

Bin Battuta
Matchbook Betting Exchange Goodwood Handicap
2.25 Goodwood, Wednesday
This well-bred son of Dubawi is out of classy mare Land Of Dreams, which makes him a half-brother to five-time Group 1 winner Dream Ahead and dual Listed scorer Into The Dark. His pedigree is significant as both those siblings excelled with plenty of cut in the ground, and in seven runs Bin Battuta is now unbeaten in three starts on ground without firm in the description. In contrast, his form figures on good to firm read 7348. He recorded a career-best when landing a hot 1m4f handicap at Ascot last time in first-time cheekpieces and is open to enough further improvement in the headgear to suggest he can defy a 5lb rise, especially with the forecast rain likely to ensure conditions are suitable.
Graeme Rodway

Three Duchesses
EBF Breeders’ Series Fillies’ Handicap
4.45 Goodwood, Wednesday
Michael Bell’s filly comes into the race on the crest of a wave, having hacked up on her last two starts at Yarmouth and Catterick with an aggregate winning margin of 11 lengths. This represents a step up in class, but she appears to be improving at such a rate that the hat-trick remains a distinct possibility.
Richard Birch

Sandymount Duke
TheTote.com Galway Plate
5.35 Wednesday, Galway
Sandymount Duke can bring a flavour of rock-star chic to the festival by capturing the Tote-sponsored Galway Plate in the colours of owner/breeder Ronnie Wood. The eight-year-old, whose trainer Jessica Harrington is enjoying an incredible year, warmed up with a win on the Flat at Leopardstown, having previously won the designated Plate trial at Down Royal. He was in a similar vein of form when winning a novice hurdle at the meeting in 2015.

Shutter Speed: can bounce back from a disappointing run in France in the Nassau
Shutter Speed: can bounce back from a disappointing run in France in the Nassau
Mark Cranham

Shutter Speed
Qatar Nassau Stakes
3.35 Goodwood, Thursday
John Gosden’s three-year-old daughter of Dansili disappointed when beaten in France last time out, but it is worth forgiving her that run in what was a messy race. The form of her win in a conditions race at Newbury in April, where she beat dual Oaks-winning stablemate Enable, speaks for itself and she can bounce back to winning ways with trip to suit.
Tom Park

Wuheida
Qatar Nassau Stakes
3.35 Goodwood, Thursday
It is a case of in for a penny and in for a pound with this strapping chestnut filly, who really caught the imagination with what she may achieve around 1m2f as a three-year-old after a controlled debut success at Newmarket a year ago. She struck over a mile in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac in the autumn and the ante-post prices for the 1,000 Guineas proved too hard to resist. Injury robbed her from that line-up, but she made a promising return in second over a mile in the Falmouth Stakes, and she has real each-way potential here against Winter, the justifiable favourite.
Dave Randall

Thomas Edison
Guinness Galway Hurdle
4.35 Galway, Thursday
After his recent comeback run, the one to take all the beating in the Guinness Galway Hurdle could be Thomas Edison. On his last visit to Ballybrit he fell at the final flight when with every chance in the 2015 running of this race won by stablemate Quick Jack. Off the track for 20 months, he caught the eye when keeping on into fourth in the Grade 3 Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary earlier this month and off a mark 2lb lower than in 2015 he makes plenty of appeal.
Justin O’Hanlon

Belgian Bill
Betfred Mile
3.00 Goodwood, Friday
As one of just three runners who stayed on the far side in the Royal Hunt Cup, Belgian Bill can be excused his finishing position at Royal Ascot, and of the trio he narrowly came out on top. The George Baker-trained nine-year-old has an excellent record in Friday’s big handicap, with an unlucky fifth in 2014, a second past the post in 2015 and a solid fourth last year. He’s 3lb lower than this time last season and he rates an excellent each-way bet at 33-1.
Ben Hutton

Battaash: every chance he will thrive at Goodwood in the King George Stakes
Battaash: every chance he will thrive at Goodwood in the King George Stakes
Alan Crowhurst

Battaash
Qatar King George Stakes
3.35 Goodwood, Friday
The new king of the 6f sprinters is Harry Angel and he may be able to drop a furlong too, but in his absence Battaash is going to take some beating. Always well regarded, he was too keen for his own good as a two-year-old but, while still showing blistering pace, he is more the finished article and sees out his races strongly. Both success so far this season have come at Sandown, which is considerably stiffer than Goodwood, but given the way he travels you’d have to think there is every chance he will thrive there. He looks a solid enough favourite.
Paul Kealy

Danzeno
Qatar Stewards’ Cup
3.35 Goodwood, Saturday
Danzeno has looked right back to his best at Ascot the last twice and will be well handicapped for the Stewards’ Cup, despite his penalty after his runaway success this month. Mick Appleby is putting his recent improvement down to the new shoes Danzeno is wearing, and whatever the reason it shouldn’t be forgotten he was verging on Group 1 class not that long ago.
Tom Segal

Polybius
Qatar Stewards’ Cup
3.35 Goodwood, Saturday
On a good mark on his old form, Polybius has been working his way back to his very best since joining David Simcock and has run excellent races in top sprint handicaps on his last two starts. He was returning from a break when a close fourth in the Wokingham at Ascot in June and ought to be that bit sharper this time, while he ran a fine race in one run in the interim when second to the now penalised Danzeno over 5f at Ascot. The return to 6f in the Stewards’ Cup will suit.
Mel Cullinan

Dark Shot
New & Lingwood Handicap
4.45 Goodwood, Tuesday
Andrew Balding’s sprinter handles undulating courses and has been on my must-back list for this meeting since his striking effort in the Epsom Dash when he was slowly away, then found trouble in running when attempting to come through the field and stormed home once in the clear to be beaten a diminishing short-head. He will be just 3lb higher at Goodwood.
James Pyman

A Likely Story
Selected race at Galway
Dermot Weld plans much of his season around the Galway festival and A Likely Story looks like he has been teed up for the meeting. He failed to feature in his first four runs this season and his handicap mark subsequently tumbled, but he showed he was on his way back when keeping on for second at Fairyhouse last time, posting an RPR of 60. That run was by far his best performance of the season but he earned much higher figures last year and looks likely to improve again for the trainer with the Galway gift.

Teofilo’s Tantheem Takes the Cabourg In Style

Sunday, July 30, 2017

5th at DVL, Gr. Stk, €80,000 G3 Prix de Cabourg (6f) Winner: Tantheem (GB), f, 2 by Teofilo (Ire)

Tantheem | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Second to High Dream Milena (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) on debut over this six-furlong trip at Chantilly June 17, Tantheem made strides forward next time when scoring with authority over 6 1/2 furlongs on the Polytrack at this circuit July 5. In the interim, High Dream Milena had been arguably unlucky not to win the G2 Prix Robert Papin after meeting interference and ending up fourth with connections now seeking to appeal. Sent straight to the stand’s rail and the lead from her wide draw by Mickael Barzalona, the Shadwell homebred began to turn the screw approaching the furlong pole and stayed on strongly to draw away for a resounding success. “She’s a light but tough filly and there were some question marks as she was coming back from the all-weather over a shorter trip, but she has speed as well as staying well,” trainer Freddy Head commented. “The further she went, the better she was going which is a good sign. Regarding her future, I will not commit immediately to the [Aug. 20 G1 Prix] Morny as I want to discuss it with her owner and the racing manager.”

Tantheem becomes the first black-type winner for Riqa, who was listed-placed on three occasions and is a daughter of the Listed Prix Yacowlef third Thamarat. She is in turn a half-sister to the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Tamayuz (GB) and a granddaughter of the G3 Prix de Flore winner Allez Les Trois (Riverman). The latter is responsible for the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club-winning sire Anabaa Blue (GB) and the smart Godolphin runners Reunite (Ire) (Kingmambo) and Measured Tempo (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and is a half-sister to the outstanding Urban Sea (Miswaki) whose legendary influence continues to dominate world racing. Riqa also has a filly foal by Kingman (GB).

War Front’s Roly Poly Battles to Rothschild Success

Sunday, July 30, 2017

4th at DVL, Gr. Stk, €300,000 G1 Prix Rothschild (8f) Winner: Roly Poly, f, 3 by War Front

Roly Poly | Scoop Dyga

By Tom Frary

Breaking her duck at this level last time in the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket July 14, TDN Rising Star Roly Poly maintained the momentum to bring up a quick double with a tenacious display here. Successful last term in the G3 Grangecon Stud S. at The Curragh and G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket, the diminutive bay had held her form when runner-up in York’s G2 Lowther S. and in the G1 Cheveley Park S. on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile before running ninth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Returning with a below-par effort when only seventh in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. over seven furlongs back at Newmarket Apr. 19, she ran better when sixth in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches over this course and distance May 13 and improved again when runner-up to stablemate Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in both the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh May 28 and the June 23 G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot prior to her Falmouth breakthrough.

Fronting the five-strong group racing up the centre throughout the early stages, she joined the stand’s-side leader Usherette (Ire) (Shamardal) at halfway and they matched strides until the Ballydoyle raider began to assert from the quarter pole. Having to fight to ward off the determined Siyoushake in the final furlong, she had the race won by the time the strong-closing Via Ravenna emerged on Siyoushake’s outer. Just behind was the 19-10 favourite Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who had to make a daring run up the rail from rear as she tried in vain to defend last year’s title. One of the race’s main eye-catchers was the returning G1 Matron S. runner-up Persuasive (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who stayed on late after having to come around tiring rivals at a crucial stage.

“This filly is improving with every run and has a lot of heart,” Ryan Moore commented. “She always fights hard and gives her best. She had to do that today, as it was a very good race and maybe that’s her best performance to date. I am not the one who decides on her next run, but I would imagine something like the Matron or the Sun Chariot are options. I’ll leave that to the trainer.”

Roly Poly’s dam Misty For Me was almost certainly top ten of the fillies to race for Aidan O’Brien, winning the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at two and the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Pretty Polly S. the following year. Her first foal was last year’s GIII Autumn Miss S. winner Cover Song (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), while her 2015 colt turned out to be this year’s G2 July S. runner-up U S Navy Flag, also by War Front. The second dam, the unraced Butterfly Cove, also threw the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G2 Debutante S. winner and G1 1000 Guineas runner-up Ballydoyle (Ire) and the listed scorer and G3 Musidora S. runner-up Twirl (Ger) from matings with Galileo. Butterfly Cove is a full-sister to the G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. winner Kamarinskaya and a half to the G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Prix Morny-winning European champion Fasliyev. Their respective dam Mr. P’s Princess is in turn a half-sister to the multiple top-level scorers Desert Wine and Menifee who both finished runner-up in the GI Kentucky Derby. Misty For Me has a yearling filly and a 2017 colt also by War Front.

Jangsan Power Clings On In Ilgan Sports Cup

by gyongmaman

Jangsan Power led from the gate and clung on desperately until the wire to win the listed Ilgan Sports Cup at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday afternoon.

The Ilgan Sports this year was for horses rated 80 or less and up-and-comer Big Trio was sent off as favourite having won his last three with considerable ease. It was not to be for the three-year-old though with French jockey Johan Victoire needing to get after his mount early and Big Trio ultimately offering little in the straight.

Instead it was another three-year-old who took the honours. Jangsan Powerhad set the early pace in the Korean Derby in May, leading until just before the furlong pole when he ran out of steam and ended up only beating one home. He stepped back to 1700M for his reappearance last month and made all and was sent off the 5/1 second favourite for the Ilgan.

Once more Jangsan Power made all but he had to see off a last gasp challenge from My Blade who gobbled up his lead in the closing stages to the extent that a photograph was needed to tell them apart. It went Jangsan Power’s way by a nose but a couple of strides later, it wouldn’t have. Gaia Thunder was in close attendance in 3rd.

IlganPhoto

Jangsan Power moves on to five wins from nine starts. For trainer Park Jae Woo it was his third Listed or Special race winner. For jockey Lim Gi Won it was his second following his victory on Always Winner in the Segye Ilbo Cup in January.

Ilgan Sports (L) – Seoul Racecourse – 1800M – July 30, 2017

1. Jangsan Power (KOR) [Menifee - City Bird (Carson City)] – Lim Gi Won – 5.5, 2.2
2. My Blade (KOR) [Pico Central - Smart Advice (Smart Strike)] – Kim Yong Geun – 2.4
3. Gaia Thunder (KOR) [One Cool Cat - Now Cope With This (Tiznow)] – Yoo Seung Wan – 4.0
Distances: Nose / 0.75 lengths
Also Ran: 4. Kawon 5. Perfect Shine 6. Raon Morris 7. Big Trio 8. Yeongnong 9. Royal Victory 10. Haetbinna

Seoul will take next weekend off but Busan will return for a rare Saturday card on August 5th and a bumper 15-race card on Sunday August 6. For the first time next Sunday, Korean racing will be available for betting in the United States, distributed to ADW’s through Sky Racing World. More on that in the coming days.
