Last Kingdom ran into the future G1 Prix de Diane winner Senga (Blame) when two-lengths runner-up as the odds-on favourite for his second start in a Saint-Cloud conditions event over a mile in September and that was the last time he tasted defeat. Returning at this venue to beat the subsequent G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) third Empire of the Star (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in a mile maiden Apr. 10, the bay was sent back here to beat Normandy Spirit (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) by a length in a conditions event again at that trip May 29 and continued his progress with this first black-type success. Settled in second early tracking Neguev as Spotify raced on his tail, he was sent to the front with 300 metres remaining and stayed on to deny the latter as they pulled away.
The winner is the first runner for Compelling, whose dam Damson was an English and Irish highweight 2-year-old as a result of her successes in the G1 Phoenix S. and G2 Queen Mary S. Her son Requinto (Ire) inherited her precocity and speed and the G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Molecomb S. winner is having fair success as a sire. Also the dam of the G3 Curragh S. runner-up Independence Day (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), she is a half-sister to the G3 Prestige S. scorer Geminiani (Ire) (King of Kings {Ire}) from the Aga Khan family of the sires Tiangar (Ire) and Tiraaz. Last Kingdom has a 2-year-old half-brother by Smart Strike, a yearling filly by Kitten’s Joy and a filly foal by Tapit.

Stepping up from a debut success over six furlongs at Fontainebleau May 18, Rosa Imperial captured the Listed Prix Hampton over five furlongs here June 10 and enjoyed another upturn with a game defeat of the vastly more experienced Son Cesio. Settled in third early, the bay comported herself with a professional air belying her lack of race-conditioning and when asked to extend managed to get the better of that battle-hardened rival inside the final 150 metres. The winner is a half-sister to last year’s Listed Prix Dahlia scorer Rosental, who was third in the G3 Prix Fille de l’Air and fourth in last month’s G2 Prix Corrida. The second dam Mannington was the winner of the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude and finished third in the G1 Blue Diamond S. and G1 Newmarket H. before producing the G1 Victoria Derby-winning sire Benicio (Aus) and the G2 Moonee Valley Fillies’ Classic Oaks heroine Romneya (Aus) (Red Ransom). The third dam is the G1 Golden Slipper heroine and Australian champion 2-year-old Bint Marscay, who is also the dam of the G3 Blue Diamond Preview scorer Sheraton (Aus) (Woodman) and the G1 Coolmore Classic winner Bollinger (Aus) (Dehere), herself responsible for the GII Louisiana Derby-winning sire Friesan Fire. Giocatissima al betting trovando le condizioni ideali, Santa Serena ha confermato le attese dei suoi tanti sostenitori siglando il Premio Bellusco, handicap sui 1800 metri in pista circolare valido come II Tris, e regalando ad un ispiratissimo Fabio Branca il quarto successo del pomeriggio. La cavalla allenata da Cristiano Fai ha strappato per conquistare il comando a Mission Of Peace, e in dirittura ha retto benissimo conservando sempre un chiaro vantaggio sul gruppo, dal quale alla fine sono emersi Carolwood Drive e Black Imagin per le piazze.
Da specialista dei terreni pesanti, e con la monta energica di Dario Vargiu, Cuggiono è riuscito a salvare il successo al termine di una corsa combattutissima, conclusa con un arrivo spettacolare a tre nel quale il portacolori della scuderia San Nazario, in prima linea sin dal via ai lati di A Fari Spenti, si è difeso con le unghie e con i denti dal finale di Grey Anita all’interno e di Lipsie all’esterno.
Terzo successo nel pomeriggio, il secondo consecutivo, per Fabio Branca nel Premio Cassinetta, un handicap ancora per i tre anni ma sui 2000 metri della pista circolare, con Rosenfire, soggetto in grande forma nel periodo e perfettamente intonato con questo tracciato. Il portacolori dell’Azienda Agricola San Felice, per il training di Antonio Marcialis, ha piazzato progressione vincente in retta, precedendo Lady Varsela che già aveva colpito su terreno pesante, e Lost Angel.
Vittoria in perfetto “stile-Branca” quella di Time Sky nel Premio Arluno, discendente sui 1500 metri in pista circolare per cavalli di 3 anni. Il portacolori della First Racing, reduce da un paio di tentativi infruttuosi in dirittura, è tornato sul percorso della sua ultima vittoria e ha di nuovo lasciato il segno al termine di un percorso di testa. Bravo il suo interprete, che si è tenuto qualcosa per gli ultimi 200 metri, e bravo l’allievo del team Marcialis, che ha saputo tirare fuori le unghie per respingere l’attacco violento di Lord Vincent, che da cavallo molto caratteriale lo ha affiancato puntando verso l’interno senza però riuscire nel sorpasso. La giuria, dopo intervento, ha però retrocesso il portacolori della scuderia Giannotti al quinto posto. Al secondo posto è così passata Brema, mentre Cheerful Ness ha preceduto Autofocus.
Cavalli di tre anni e oltre in un handicap sui 1500 metri della pista circolare. Non ha fatto sconti la favorita Charity Girl, presentata da Marco Gasparini e con Luca Maniezzi in sella, che con una precisa “rasoiata” è venuta a sopravanzare nei 100 metri finali Vergiate, Le Green Cest Chic e Tentino, che ha provato la gara di testa.
La prova tecnicamente più interessante del mercoledì era una condizionata sui 2000 metri in pista circolare per cavalli di tre anni e oltre: a dispetto del numero ridotto di partenti, è venuta fuori una corsa tirata via a buon ritmo da Verdetto Finale, che ha guidato con un paio di lunghezze di vantaggio su Magic Mystery. Lo schema ha esaltato le caratteristiche di Vischeto, che dopo un paio di corse in cui aveva raccolto poco, per svolgimenti troppo tattici, ha ritrovato la via del successo, con Fabio Branca in sella. Il portacolori della Effevi è venuto bene in retta e ai 200 finali è passato di slancio sull’alleato Magic Mystery, mentre Verdetto Finale è stato superato dai due compagni di colori ai 250 finali ma ha difeso il terzo posto.
Apertura di riunione con una “reclamare” sui 1200 metri in pista dritta per cavalli di tre anni e oltre. A Rycus ci sono volute dodici corse e la presenza in sella dell’allievo Giovanni Cabitza per centrare la prima, sospirata vittoria. L’allievo di Antonio Marcialis, subito nelle prime posizioni, ha allungato ai 300 finali e si è difeso dall’affondo di Thibodeau e dal recupero di Musa del Canto. Poco brillante Flemmatico, calato a traguardo lontano.
