Impending brings up Australian G1 success
The classy colt Impending scored a G1 victory that defied the odds and provided full reward for the perseverance and dedication of Godolphin’s entire Australian team in the Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.
The colt, who had spent so much of his early career in the shadow of his stablemate Astern, stepped decisively into the top rank with a comprehensive defeat of In Her Time and Clearly Innocent.
Impending took his place in Queensland’s richest race with stable confidence high, but a wide gate on the tricky Doomben circuit looked to have dented his prospects.
“We thought this was a great race for him, he’d worked so well over the past two weeks, but after the draw I knew it was going to be tough,” said trainer Darren Beadman.
“There were a couple of other issues as well in the lead up, he trod on his shoe and pulled it off and Brett Killion who looks after him spent most of the past 24 hours icing his foot so we could get him to the start.
“it’s been a huge team effort.”
For Beadman the win was his first at G1 level as a trainer and was the fifth for Godolphin in Australia this season.
It also completed a rare sequence for the former champion rider who won G1 races on Impending’s sire, the Darley-based Lonhro and his dam Mnemosyne.
Beadman’s 86 G1 wins in the saddle also included five aboard Lonhro’s sire, Octagonal.
But Godolphin’s recently installed Australian head trainer couldn’t witness the biggest moment of his brief training career in person having been struck down by a virus that forced him to be hospitalised on Thursday.
Godolphin’s Australian managing director Henry Plumptre believes Impending can add to his feature-race record in the new season that begins on August 1.
“He will head home now and we can have a talk about the spring,” Plumptre said.
Before his latest victory, Impending’s major success had come in the G2 Stan Fox Stakes at Rosehill in September, 2106.
His third win from 12 starts took his racetrack earnings beyond A$1.5 million and made him Lonhro’s ninth individual G1 winner.
For winning jockey Corey Brown, the Stradbroke victory was his fourth G1 success in Australia since returning from a stint in Singapore earlier this year.
Brown took a conservative approach aboard the colt, easing him across from his wide gate to be three-wide in midfield until entering the short Doomben straight.
With 300m to run he moved out to the centre of the track and unleashed an irresistible challenge.
“I found a nice trail three-wide and even though we were out there for the entire race, he was comfortable,” Brown said.
“When I asked for his effort, he let down so well, he was the best horse in the race and he deserved it.”

Ricordiamo il meeting più bello ed atteso del mondo comincerà ufficialmente il 20 Giugno con le Queen Anne Stakes, King’s Stand e St James Palace’s Stakes per proseguire poi con il 21, 22, 23 e 24 giugno con la chiusura in grande stile. Ma di questo ne parleremo più nel dettaglio nei prossimi giorni, quando arriveranno ulteriori conferme. Intanto questo post serve per far stimolare la fantasia degli appassionati e ricordare un appuntamento clou.
Quanto alle presenze, cominciano ad arrivare conferme e defezioni. Quanto a chi ci sarà, è di ieri la notizia che l’attuale Leading North American Turf Miler American Patriot (War Front), vincitore a Keeneland delle Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes nella sua ultima uscita, correrà la prova da £600,000 che aprirà il Royal Ascot 2017, le Queen Anne Stakes. Il figlio di War Front, allenato da Todd Pletcher, salperà alla volta dell’Inghilterra nei prossimi giorni, probabilmente il 13 Giugno, e si preparerà al meglio per l’appuntamento. Qualche giorno fa ha breezato alla grandissima in patria, ed in più avrà in sella Frankie Dettori ingaggiato appositamente. Il 4 anni ha vissuto una buona stagione dei 3 anni in USA, vincendo a livello di G3 e piazzandosi nelle Secretariat Stakes G1 nel giorno dell’Arlington Million Day a Chicago. Quest’anno si è confermato top mier vincendo a Gulfstream una allowance e poi ha catturato il Maker’s 46 Mile. Attualmente guadagna $475,050 grazie a 5 vittorie in 11 uscite. L’obiettivo, indipendentemente da come andrà al Royal Ascot, è quello di farsi trovare pronto per la Breeder’s Cup Mile G1 a Del Mar in autunno. American Patriot è a 25/1 nell’antepost.
Fabre fires Stars at ‘winnable’ Prince of Wales’s
French ace Cloth Of Stars will bid to take Royal Ascot’s biggest prize back across the Channel, after trainer Andre Fabre candidly admitted the injury-enforced absence of Minding has persuaded him to target the £750,000 Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
The four-year-old Sea The Stars colt, who is unbeaten in three starts this year, is now set to face fellow Godolphin highflyer Jack Hobbs a week on Wednesday, with Fabre having delayed plans to step the colt back up to a mile and a half.
Cloth Of Stars and Mekhtaal – who between them have dominated the middle-distance scene in France among older horses this season – will provide the nation with arguably its best chance of capturing the royal meeting’s richest race since Byword scored for Fabre in 2010.
While for many the banker of the week will be Winter in the Coronation Stakes, the French tricolour will fly against her after Fabrice Chappet revealed the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Precieuse would be supplemented.
Cloth Of Stars had a neck to spare over Mekhtaal when winning the Group 2 Prix d’Harcourt, before getting the better of Zarak when landing a first Group 1 in the Prix Ganay.
“Cloth Of Stars will be stepped back up in trip at some stage but with Minding out the Prince of Wales’s looks winnable, and he is in good form,” said Fabre, who expects to have three runners at the meeting.
“Le Brivido will go for the Jersey and [Queen Anne entry] Usherette will probably be supplemented into the Duke of Cambridge Stakes.”
Cloth Of Stars is a general 6-1 shot, with Ulysses shading Jack Hobbs for favourtism at 3-1.
Prix d’Ispahan winner Mekhtaal is one of four potential French-based runners at Ascot for owners Al Shaqab.
“Mekhtaal is on course for the Prince of Wales’s,” said Al Shaqab’s Rupert Pritchard-Gordon.
“He looks well and fit and has run recently. He runs well fresh so will do only one more very routine piece of work. Everyone is very happy with him and the one thing we’ll be hoping for is that the weather isn’t like last year. We’d want nice fast ground.”
Mekhtaal’s trainer Jean-Claude Rouget will also send last year’s Coronation Stakes winner Qemah back to Ascot, while Al Shaqab could field one or both of a pair of Francois Rohaut-trained fillies in Al Jazi and Wajnah.
Pritchard-Gordon added: “Qemah looks great. Ribchester would obviously be a serious nut to crack but, as we all know, things can happen, so if unfortunately he were not to be there then the Queen Anne would come under consideration, while there is also the Duke of Cambridge.
“Al Jazi works at Deauville on Tuesday and the Diamond Jubilee has been the aim for some time. Wajnah has come out of the French Guineas very well and is still in the Coronation, while we will also look closely at the Prix Chloe.”
Wajnah was the only filly who raced prominently in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches to be involved in the finish, although she had no answer to impressive winner Precieuse.
Precieuse was making her first start over a mile at Deauville and the daughter of Tamayuz – owned and bred by Brendan and Anne Marie Hayes – will take on dual Guineas heroine Winter after connections decided to pay the £35,000 late entry.
“She will be supplemented for the Coronation,” revealed Chappet. “She’s come out of her race well and everything’s in place for her to run.”
Chappet, who is yet to make a choice between the King’s Stand and Diamond Jubilee for Finsbury Square – runner-up to Muthmir in last Sunday’s Prix du Gros-Chene – will also be represented by impressive Chantilly winner Mister Five Euros in the Windsor Castle Stakes.

Sui 1400 metri della dirittura milanese City of Stars aveva siglato il Premio Fiume HL, a ottobre: il portacolori della scuderia Concarena si è prontamente ripetuto in questa bella edizione del Premio Po, prova abbinata alla scommessa Tris/Quartè/Quintè del sabato. Subito in prima linea insieme a Avabin e ad Academy House, il cavallo allenato da Marco Gasparini e montato da Luca Maniezzi nel finale è riuscito a controllare abbastanza agevolmente lo spunto della sempre più sorprendente Smigavaz. Terzo posto per il redivivo Avabin davanti a Mujas e Something New che hanno completato il podio del Quinte’
Debutto vincente di Perego con la nuova giubba della scuderia Topeeka nel Premio Mario Cipolloni, tradizionale HL per cavalli di tre anni e oltre sui 2000 metri in pista media. Il neo allievo di Silvia Casati, con in sella un Pierantonio Convertino molto intonato, è venuto a imporsi al termine di una bella progressione sugli altri attendisti Mirroronthewall e Keplero, mentre il gioco di scuderia attuato da Freedom Beel e Vischeto per arginare Candiani Street alla fine è stato pagato da tutti e tre i soggetti più attesi.
Tre anni protagonisti in un handicap sui 2000 metri in pista media: confermando l’ottimo standard primaverile, Eola della Plata con Pierantonio Convertino in sella ha piazzato la zampata vincente, dominando di forza il generoso battistrada The Druid che ha provato ad opporsi alla grigia di Luciano Vitabile e ha venduto cara la pelle. Bel finale di Cortese che ha chiuso al terzo posto rimontando Angel Spring
Altra manche del pomeriggio per gli amatori, la finale del Trofeo Agri, sui 1800 metri in pista media: dopo aver perso in maniera un po’ rocambolesca una recente Tris, Excellent Beyond e Veronica Grasso Caprioli si sono rifatti con gli interessi in questa circostanza, piazzando una progressione vincente in retta con cui hanno avuto ragione di Free Passage, migliorato filtrando lungo lo steccato, e Clever Bend, calato nei metri finali.
Sfruttando a dovere il pesino, Strangway con un preciso Gabriele Cannarella in sella ha inscenato la fuga perfetta nel Premio Virginio Lamberti, handicap per cavalli di tre anni sui 1600 metri in pista media: in testa dal via, il cavallo allenato e di proprietà di Glauco Cicognani ha allungato secco ai 300 finali non appena Giovane Holden, che lo aveva seguito dal via, ha abbozzato un attacco. Giovane Holden ha invece accusato i chili e nel finale è stato raggiunto e superato da Persefone per il secondo posto
Ancora dirittura protagonista, stavolta con i professionisti in sella a cavalli di tre anni e oltre impegnati sui 1200 metri. Ritirata giovedì in una prova fiorentina, Giglio di Breme aveva evidentemente nel mirino questa prova ed il suo team ci ha visto giusto, perché la portacolori della scuderia Filotto, allenata da Marco AMerio e montata dal bravo Rosario Mangione, ha “largheggiato” nella compagnia dopo aver condotto sin dalle fasi iniziali centrando la prima vittoria della carriera. Cashmere Guest è stato ai fianchi della vincitrice sin dal via e ha conservato la miglior piazza su Stolen Heart, mentre Zittozitto ha pagato la scarsa andatura della fase iniziale e nonostante una buona chiusa è terminato al quarto posto.
Apertura di pomeriggio con gli amatori impegnati nel Premio Los Cardos, handicap sui 1400 metri in pista dritta. Non ha mancato il bersaglio Brillante Blu, uno dei soggetti più attesi, che ha così replicato la vittoria ottenuta su questo percorso il 10 maggio: sfortunato nella finale del San Siro Mile, il cavallo di Cristiano Fais (proprietario, allenatore e interprete) ha superato ai 300 finali il battistrada Gordon Gekko e ha poi tenuto in rispetto Superbina, valida anche su questa distanza. Gordon Gekko ha concluso al terzo posto, mentre il favorito Amadei ha compromesso la sua prova con una pessima sgabbiata.
