Wings Of Eagles swooped fast and late under Padraig Beggy to spring a huge 40-1 surprise for Aidan O’Brien in the Derby.

Wings Of Eagles, who was one of six runners trained by O’Brien, collared well-fancied stablemate Cliffs Of Moher close home to win by three-quarters of a length, with 7-2 favourite Cracksman a further neck back in third.

Victory in the £1.623 million contest – the richest race ever staged in Britain – is by far and away the biggest success in Beggy’s career. He had previously ridden just three winners since 2015.

It was O’Brien’s sixth winner of the Derby, and his fourth in the last six years. Wings Of Eagles is owned by the Coolmore partners of Derrick Smith, John Magnier and Michael Tabor, and ran in Smith’s purple silks.

‘You never worry about the price’

The winner may have been sent off an unconsidered 40-1 shot having finished runner-up to the reopposing Venice Beach in the Chester Vase last time, but Beggy was hopeful of a bold showing.

He said: “When you’re riding one for Aidan O’Brien in colours like these you never worry about the price because they always have a chance. He gave me a great feel going down and I had a bit of bad luck in running, but I got there at the right time in the end.

“They went quick. I was drawn beside Ryan [Moore on Cliffs Of Moher] so I decided to follow him and let the best horse take me into the race. A furlong down I thought, ‘If I get a run I’ll win’. In fairness to this big horse his best furlong of the race was his last. I don’t get to sit on too many beasts like this at the races so I’m going to enjoy it.”

O’Brien said: “They were really pleased with him at home and we thought he was a nice horse last year. He had a lovely run at Chester last time and we couldn’t be happier. We’re delighted with Cliffs Of Moher too. He was a little bit of a baby and got there but got a little bit tired. His next run will be something to look forward to.”

Paying tribute to Beggy’s ability as a rider, O’Brien added: “Padraig is a brilliant rider – a world-class rider, he always has been. He rides an awful lot of work for us and is tactically very aware.”

How the race was won

Beggy settled his mount towards the rear as Douglas Macarthur and The Anvil, both also trained by O’Brien, cut out a strong gallop, and as the field rounded Tattenham Corner Beggy the winner had only two runners behind him.

Wings Of Eagles did not initially get a clear passage down the straight, and it looked as if the finish was going to be fought out by the well-fancied pair Cracksman and Cliffs Of Moher, after Moore unleashed the Ballydoyle number one down the outside.

However, once in the clear Wings Of Eagles started to motor and finished with a flourish to win going away.

Irish Derby bid

Trainer John Gosden is eyeing revenge in the Irish Derby with third-placed Cracksman, who was making just his third start after he was a late withdrawal from the Dante Stakes last month.

Gosden said: “The horse was still mentally immature about things. Frankie [Dettori, rider] had to, at a couple of stages, just galvanise him. He has run a bit babyish and could have done with that extra race.

“He’s run a grand race and he’s just got caught for experience at little at the end. They’re a pretty solid, even bunch of colts. He’s in the Irish Derby and I wouldn’t mind going there.

Eminent, who like Cracksman is sired by Frankel, finished fourth.

   The only Ballydoyle runner not by Galileo, Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}) came over the top of the first three in the betting late on under Padraig Beggy to spring a 40-1 surprise in the G1 Investec Derby at Epsom. Runner-up in the G3 Chester Vase last time May 11, Derrick Smith’s bay who sported the pink cap swooped from rear much as his sire did in this race in 2011 to overhaul Cliffs of Moher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the final yards and win by 3/4 of a length, with a neck back to the 7-2 favourite Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in third. “When they are trained by Aidan O’Brien, you don’t worry about their price as they always have a chance,” commented Beggy, riding in his first Derby. “He gave me a great feel going down and they went quick, so I followed Ryan [Moore] on the best horse in the race and let him take me into it. A furlong down I thought I’d win if I got a run.”

Inns of Court, a Nov. 15 winner going seven panels at Chantilly in his sole freshman start, doubled up over the same distance at Saint-Cloud on sophomore return Apr. 11 and stepped down in class and trip here after posting a respectable sixth in Deauville’s May 14 G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains on stakes bow last time. Positioned at the tail of the field from flagfall here, he eased into contention on the bridle approaching the quarter-mile pole and easily asserted superiority once pouncing for control inside the final eighth to claim a career high with something to spare. “He had a problem in the Poulains, as he pulled hard early and his saddle slipped and that was it,” explained winning trainer Andre Fabre. “He needs pace in a race and can stretch to a mile. He’s in the [seven-furlong G3] Jersey S. [at Royal Ascot June 21], but that will probably come too early and the [July 9 G1] Prix Jean Prat [at Chantilly] is a possibility.”

   Coming into this on the back of a comprehensive success in the Listed Conqueror S. at Goodwood May 6, Laugh Aloud looked a filly ready to take on the best around as she surged to an impressive five-length success under James Doyle. In front initially before settling in third, the 4-5 favourite was sent back to the lead with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and shot clear of Absolute Blast (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who held off Tisbutadream (Ire) (Dream Ahead) by a neck. “It’s nice that she is versatile now, as she used to like to go out in front but she was switched off today and scampered up the hill. It was pretty authoritative,” her rider commented.

Sconcertante è la parola giusta per descrivere la potenza di fuoco del Coolmore che dal cilindro ha tirato fuori per il 238° Investec Derby di Epsom (dotazione £1,625,000) la sorpresona Wings Of Eagles (Pour Moi), vincitore inatteso del Blue Ribbon ad una quota shock di 40/1, 80 e spiccioli la quota al tot italiano ma questo non fa testo, in una corsa pazzesca in tutti gli ambiti.
Ha vinto quello meno atteso, con il jockey meno atteso, del plotone di Aidan O’Brien il quale si conferma allenatore da Derby (per lui sesta vittoria dopo Galileo, High Chaparral, Camelot, Ruler Of The World, Australia) e soprattutto un allenatore capace di gestire tanta qualità fino a non sapere chi realmente possa essere migliore di altri. Un genio, comandante in capo di una vera e propria industria che mette in campo competenza e capitali a non finire. Allevano e comprano bene, non buttano quasi mai soldi. Investono. Un Derby come questo, in genere, lascia aperti tanti spifferi sulla reale qualità generale di una generazione che ha eletto un cavallo che finora, prima del Derby, aveva vinto una corsa nei bassifondi irlandesi di Killarney ad Agosto dopo aver perso al debutto a Galway (7° di 11) e nel corso del 2017 nel quale ancora non aveva vinto. 

Ma c’è tempo di parlare della sua storia e di quello che rappresenta questo Derby in termini di qualità. Con un finale intenso, travolgente, dalle retrovie, tale Padraigh Beggy, uno che nel 2014 in Australia era stato squalificato per 15 mesi dopo esser stato trovato positivo e dopo aver falsificato le prove, ha messo sotto il compagno favorito Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo) e Cracksman (Frankel) sui quali, rispettivamente, Ryan Moore e Frankie Dettori avevano realizzato dei capolavori tattici. Ma nulla è valso lo sforzo, quando trovi sulla tua strada un cavallo che ha fondo ed energia da spendere quando gli altri hanno speso i massimi. 

L’andatura è stata brillante sin dall’inizio con Douglas Mcarthur (Galileo) a menare le danze sin dall’inizio con in scia Venice Beach (Galileo) e gli altri ben raggruppati ad un paio di lunghezze dalla testa. Dopo il Tattenham Corner, ecco la discesa verso il “piece of wood” tanto caro a Federico Tesio con gas a manetta per prendersi la storia. Quando tutto sembrava risolversi in una lotta tra Cliffs, Cracksman ed un positivo Eminent (Frankel), poi quarto lottando, ecco materializzarsi la figura di Paddy Baggy a bordo di una freccia alata. Boooom!

Qui possiamo tornare a parlare di cifre, fare considerazioni. Paddy Beggy era al primo tentativo nel Derby, subito vinto. In generale il Derby è la sua quarta vittoria in assoluto dal 2015, su 9 monte sostenute. Incredibile. Nel dopo corsa ha dichiarato di aver preso di mira Ryan Moore, che secondo lui era il cavallo da battere. Beffato sul palo, beffati tutti a dir la verità.

Sesta vittoria per Padre Aidan nel Derby, settima per il Coolmore se aggiungiamo proprio Pour Moi che vinse per il training di Andre Fabre nel 2011 con mossa spericolata di Barzalona sul palo.
Wings Of Eagles è allevato da Aliette e Gilles Forien, acquistato per €220,000 alle Arqana August Yearling Sales ed è prodotto dello stallone Pour Moi (Montjeu), vincitore con Barzalona nel 2011 ad Epsom per il Coolmore, e della fattrice Ysoldina (Kendor), piazzata nelle Poule d’essai des Pouliches, già madre di Torentosa (Oasis Dream) e Gyrella (Oasis Dream), piazzati di Listed. La seconda mamma è Rotina (Crystal Glitters), la quale ha dato molti vincitori tra cui Belle Et Celebre (Peintre Celebre), vincitrice di Saint-Alary G1, e Whortleberry (Starborough), vincitrice di Lydia Tesio G2 in Italia. La famiglia è piuttosto ordinaria, ma ricca di Classe.
Ha debuttato come detto a Galway in Luglio senza piazzarsi e poi ha vinto una maiden a Killarney migliorando molto. A Newmarket, nella terza uscita in carriera, è arrivato quarto nelle Zetland Stakes alle spalle di Coronet, Cunco e Permian, per rimanere in tema. Poi ha provato a Saint Cloud G1 ma arrivando nelle retrovie in una corsa vinta da Waldgeist. Al rientro, a Chester nel Vase, si è ben “svegliato”, come insegna la tradizione del Cheshire, finendo bene alle spalle di Venice Beach, migliorando esponenzialmente ad Epsom alla seconda uscita in stagione.

International Sunday: Preview (June 4)

It’s a Group race double-header at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday. Black-type is up for grabs in the Ttukseom Cup while one race later it is Korea vs Japan in the SBS Sports Sprint. There are 11 races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 and 6 at Busan from 12:40 to 17:05.

Both races are part of a series. The Ttukseom Cup gets the “Queens Tour” for fillies and mares underway while the SBS Sports Sprint is the 2nd leg of the “Sprint Series” which will culminate in the international Korea Sprint in September.

The winner of the first leg of the Sprint Series returns here and could well be favourite. Success Story made his name with a pair of 3rd place finishes at the Dubai World Cup Carnival in 2016 and having returned to winning ways over 1800M in February, got the better of a strong field in the Busan Ilbo Cup on the south-coast last month. Only one other participant from that 1st leg tries his luck again; that’s Perdido Pomeroy, who won this race last year but has struggled for form since.

Japan sends two. Kimon Avalon, who finished 5th in the race last year, returns to the peninsula to try again but there will be more attention paid to 6-year-old mare Party Dress who operates at JRA level at home. It’s the Korea-based one that will be fancied though with 2015 Asia Challenge Cup winner Choegang Schiller, in-form Doraonpogyeongseon and Brian Dean’s Choegangja all set to be well-backed.

The Ttukseom Cup, named after the district of downtown Seoul that was home to the racecourse before it moved to its present site in the satellite city of Gwacheon, is one of six Korean races included in this year’s international “Blue Book” and there are ten fillies and mares vying for the Black Type it confers – not to mention a 228Million Won first prize.

US import Haeya went down to her first defeat in April but looks to be the one to beat in the 1400M test. Form comments below:

Race 8: Class Open (1400M) Ttukseom Cup (KOR G2) / KRW 400 Million

1. INDIAN STAR – Stakes winner at this track last October. Narrowly beaten last time out at this distance, she’s a fast starter and should be in the mix at the end.

2. MIGHTY GEM – Ended last year in great form but hasn’t looked right in three starts so far this term. Strong finisher but looks up against it here.

3. HAEYA – Suffered her first defeat in April, fading late on. That was her first start since January after lots of setbacks. If she’s right, she will be hard to beat.

4. GOLD BLUE –Won consecutive races in January and February but two subsequent class 1 starts have been at long distances. Very strong finisher, so long as she doesn’t leave too much to do, she could be in the hunt late on. Read more of this post

International Weekend: Saturday Review

Korean racing’s first international weekend of 2017 got underway on Saturday and while the main events are tomorrow, there was plenty of action in the three exchange races and it was two young US imports who produced the stand-out performances.

Dolkong

First was the China Horse Industry Association Trophy and it resulted in a gate to wire victory for filly Kiliui Yeowang (Adios Charlie). The filly, a $33,000 purchase from the OBS June Sales last year maintained her 100% on what was her 3rd start, seeing off the challenge of Spirit Of Hansen by just over a length.

 

Next up was the Selangor Turf Club Trophy which despite only attracting a field of eight generated plenty of betting interest. Ultimately, the 1800 contest would come down to a photo finish which saw the slight betting favourite The Queen Silver (Officer) win by a head.

 

The Queen Silver is a five-year-old mare and was winning for the 6th time on her 25th start. Kim Dong Soo rode.

The final exchange race was with the Turkey Jockey Club and this year, to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations between Turkey and South Korea, the race was this year simply called the “Turkey Cup”. It also produced the performance of the day by three-year-old US import Dolkong.

 

Dolkong (Afleet Alex) was a $35,000 purchase as a two-year-old and had won two of his five starts prior to today, setting some impressive times along the way. Today was impressive too as Dolkong shook off the attentions of favourite Cheongdam Dokki with a furlong to run and cruised clear to win by four lengths on the line. He’ll be one to watch later this year.

Sunday sees a double helping of Group race action with the Ttukseom Cup and the SBS Sports Sprint.

La rubrica italians all’estero vedrà nel weekend un paio di picchi tecnici che vanno menzionati certamente. In Francia non ci sarà solo Demurino in sella a Brametot, ma anche il Prix du Gros-Chene G3 sui 1000 metri di Chantilly nel quale correrà l’italiano Plusquemavie (Kheleyf) che ci riprova dopo il quarto posto ottenuto nel Tudini G3 di domenica scorsa a Capannelle sui 1200 metri. Il pupillo di Fazio, che sui 1000 ha fornito uno sparo nel Certosa in stagione, avrà in sella Cristian Demuro ed affronterà 10 avversari non irresistibili ma comunque solidissimi performers. Il vincitore di Aloisi e Tudini nel 2016, ha pescato il 10 di steccato. 

IL CAMPO PARTENTI DEL GROS CHENE QUI.

In Giappone effettuerà la prima spedizione al di fuori dei confini di Hong Kong quello che è attualmente il miglior prodotto dell’allevamento italiano. Beauty Only, meglio noto come Gentleman Only (Holy Roman Emperor) quando era in Italia, vincitore del Berardelli poi venduto dalla Effevi a Eleanor Kwok Law Kwai Chun & Patrick Kwok Ho Chuen e nella nuova patria vincitore in Dicembre dell’Hong Kong Mile G1, correrà domenica a Tokyo nello Yasuda Kinen G1 sulla distanza del miglio, contro altri 17 migliori milers locali. 

Beauty Only, allevato dalla famiglia Parri, e titolare di un 119 di rating, in questo 2017 non ha ancora vinto ma ha visto lievitare la sua condizione piazzandosi 2 volte secondo, l’ultima nel Champions Mile G1 di Sha Tin. Allenato da Tony Cruz, sarà montato da Zac Purton ed affronterà ancora Contentment (Hussonet) già affrontato nell’ultima corsa disputata. L’opposizione locale è capeggiata da Isla Bonita (Fuji Kiseki), con un Cristophe Lemaire in formissima ed in grado di limare vittoria dopo vittoria il divario con Mirco Demuro in classifica, ora diventato esiguo (70 a 69 vittorie) con 2 vittorie nella giornata di sabato. Isla è vincitore Classico ma non vince da un pò. Quinto lo scorso anno, il 6 anni è finito secondo tre volte la scorsa stagione incluso il Mile Championship. Mirco Demuro sarà in sella al grigio Red Falx (Swept Overboard).
