Banjiui Jewang Wins Again At Busan

by gyongmaman

Banjiui Jewang took the honours in a dramatic finish to the feature race at Busan on Friday. Peter Wolsley’s 4-year-old got the best of a tight four-way finish to the 1200M Sprint.

Having won four of his first five starts – the only loss being a 2nd place to Power Blade in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup, Banjiui Jewang (Ecton Park) was seen as one of the leading contenders on the 2016 Classic trail. It wasn’t to be though. 7th in the KRA Cup Mile and 5th in the Derby was followed by a series of setbacks that saw him miss the final six months of the season.

He finally returned this January and while it seemed he’d lost his old form completely, he perked up with a 2nd place in early April. That was followed up two weeks later by a win – his first for 14 months – which led him to be favourite for Friday’s race. Under Jo Sung Gon, Banjiui Jewang hugged the rail throughout and just got up to defeat the fast finishing Triple Party by a nose.

One race earlier in race 9, Thomas Gillespie’s Mujeok Wonderful (Tiz Wonderful) sauntered to a 7-length win under Cypriot jockey Marios Mina. It was a second win in four starts for the US import. Also in the winner’s circle was Francisco Da Silva; he partnered Pink Blade to victory in race 7.

*Later in the evening over in Singapore, Moon Se Young had his first rides at Kranji. As expected his three mounts (two scheduled and one additional spare), didn’t trouble the placings

3rd Dam: Grimpola (Ger), by Windwurf (Ger)
Sent off the 7-2 second favourite for this maiden won 12 months ago by the subsequent Derby flop and rebounding class act Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Dubai Thunder who is a half-brother to the stable’s G1 Champion S. and G1 Lockinge S. hero Farhh (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Co-Hwt. Older Horse-Eng at 9.5-11f, Co-Hwt. European Older Horse at 9-11f, Hwt. Older Horse-Eng at 7-9.5f, Hwt. European Older Horse at 7-9f, MG1SW-Eng & G1SP-Fr, $2,114,455, was sent up to race in third early. In front with 2 1/2 furlongs remaining, the bay hung fire for a stride or two but when given one smack with Adam Kirby’s whip responded by taking off and delivering a jaw-dropping 10-length success, eased down near the line. “He’s very nice. He was very babyish beforehand and a bit randy, but he’s got a serious engine,” his jockey told the Racing Post. “He liked getting his toe in, but I’m not saying he needs it soft. He’s got class.” Farhh, who benefitted from the absence of Frankel (GB) in 2013 having finished runner-up to him in the G1 Juddmonte International S. and G1 Sussex S., was a similarly slow-maturing type along with his full-brothers, the G3 Winter Hill S. scorer and G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern runner-up Racing History (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), GSW-Eng & G1SP-Ger, $244,910, and G3 Strensall S. third Basem (GB), GSP-Eng & SP-Tur, $240,543\fs21f1. The dam Gonbarda collected the G1 Deutschland Preis and G1 Preis von Europa in her native Germany and is a half to the G3 Grosser Preis der Dortmunder Wirtschaft winner and G2 Mehl-Muelhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) runner-up Gonlargo (Ger) (Big Shuffle) and G3 Princess Elizabeth S. scorer Gonfilia (Ger) (Big Shuffle). The third dam Grimpola (Ger) (Windwurf {Ger}) was successful in the G2 Schwarzgold-Rennen (German 1000 Guineas) and third in the G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) before producing two black-type performers including the G3 Premio Dormello third Gryada (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). She went on to produce Fame and Glory (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), who had the misfortune to be foaled in the same year as Sea the Stars (Ire) but who was able to make hay in that brilliant colt’s absence and win the G1 Irish Derby, G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, G1 Ascot Gold Cup and G1 Coronation Cup. Grimpola’s Goonda (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) was also responsible for a host of black-type performers beginning with “Global”, most notably the G2 Maurice Lacroix-Trophy winner Global Dream (Ger) (Seattle Dancer). Judging by the exploits of his siblings, there is every chance that Dubai Thunder will make his mark in group company, while the dam also has a yearling filly by Pivotal to come. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $8,373.

Dartmouth Prevails In Yorkshire Cup Thriller

Dartmouth and Ryan Moore | racingfotos.com

By Tom Frary

Backed into favouritism on this return, The Queen’s Dartmouth managed to prevail in a thrilling finish to this feature of the May meeting’s final day under another making-the-difference ride from Ryan Moore for a popular success on the rain-battered Knavesmire. Coming of age when winning the G3 John Porter S. switched from a waterlogged Newbury to Chelmsford’s Polytrack and staged over an extended 13 furlongs last April, the bay followed up in the G3 Ormonde S. over that same trip at Chester in May before upstaging Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot in June. Only third behind that rival in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. back at Ascot in July, he failed to give the 3-year-old Algometer (GB) (Archipenko) 12 pounds when second in the G3 Arc Trial over 11 furlongs at Newbury in September prior to his typically genuine Woodbine run.

Held up in fourth early as the nine-year-old former G1 Prix du Cadran winner High Jinx set off in isolation, Dartmouth was delivered stand’s side as a line of five fought out the finish spread across the track from the quarter pole. It looked near the line as if the 2015 G1 St Leger heroine Simple Verse would emerge on top against the far rail, but Moore was able to conjure a final surge from the Royal runner and overhaul the mare as just over a length covered the first five home. The Queen’s racing manager John Warren said, “I didn’t think he was going to get there, but Ryan had decided to come this side and although I don’t think he anticipated they would be as far away as they were it was another masterful ride. He’s an exceptionally brave, tough and genuine horse and it is rare to have a horse of this calibre. You can always depend on him to overcome adverse conditions and I suspect Sir Michael will look at the [G2] Hardwicke [S. at Royal Ascot June 24] again. I would be very surprised if he didn’t, as that’s his race. He’s an intreresting horse at this kind of trip and although you can ask horses that try and they give it, you can’t exploit them too much.” His rider added, “He travelled very easily the whole way and has that mile-and-a-half pace so he was doing a bit too much at stages, but he’s such an honest horse. It didn’t help that I was apart from them at the finish, as every time he has a fight he gives more so he’s done well.”

One of three black-type winners for his G3 Blue Wind S.-winning dam Galatee, Dartmouth has already surpassed the best of those in the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly scorer Manatee. The third dam Albertine, a half to the French champion and sire Ashmore (Fr), produced the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic and G1 Prix d’Ispahan hero Arcangues and the G3 Prix de Psyche winner Agathe (Manila) who was also runner-up in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and third in the G1 Prix de Diane. Her daughter Aquarelliste (Fr) (Danehill) was able to win that Chantilly Classic, while her full-brother Artiste Royal (Ire) captured the GI Charles Whittingham Memorial H. and GI Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship S. Also from the family of the G1 1000 Guineas heroine Cape Verdi (Ire) (Caerleon) and GI Beverly D. S. and GI Diana S. winner Angara (GB) (Alzao), Galatee also has an as-yet unraced 3-year-old colt by Oasis Dream (GB) named Demophon (GB), a 2-year-old daughter of Dubawi (Ire) named Desert Breeze (GB) and a colt foal also by Dubawi.

Tomyris | Racing Post

By Sean Cronin

Tomyris, who was a Nov. 2 first-up fourth to subsequent G3 Nell Gwyn S. heroine Daban (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) going seven furlongs on the Kempton Polytrack surface in her sole juvenile start, graduated in taking style over the same trip at Newmarket in her turf bow on sophomore return last time Apr. 20, and continued on the upgrade with victory in this first stakes start. Steadied to race with just one of her five homebred rivals in arrears after the break, the 5-1 chance made smooth headway on the bridle in the straight and kept on well under a tender drive once angled into open runway passing the two pole to assert for a personal best from On Her Toes. “She won well on quicker ground at Newmarket and has shown a lot of ability at home, but we didn’t know how she’d handle the soft going,” commented Andrea Atzeni. “She travelled well throughout and put the race to bed fairly quickly. She found more when Ryan [Moore aboard On Her Toes] came at me and she is very game. She did it well and looks like she can only get better.”

Tomyris’s dam Totally Devoted (Seeking The Gold), who was purchased by Charlie Gordon-Watson for $590,000 at Keeneland in 2010, is a stakes-placed half-sister to G1 St Leger hero and G1 Epsom Derby runner-up Rule of Law (Kingmambo), GII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile second Dame Marie (Smart Strike) and to the dams of G3 Sweet Solera S. third Wedding Ring (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris runner-up Migwar (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Also from the family of G3 Prestige S. scorer Circle of Gold (Ire) (Royal Academy), the homebred bay is kin to the 2-year-old filly Tolkyn (Fr) (Intello {Ger}).

Main Desire | Racing Post

By Sean Cronin

Main Desire justified a measure of market support when impressing, going a shade over five panels, in her May 2 Nottingham debut last time, and maintained her perfect tally with a game score in this pointer to the June 21 G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot. Reined back to race handy in an overall sixth after an alert getaway in this black-type bow, she powered into the firing line soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly under a final-furlong drive to deny Neola for a career high nearing the line. “She’s only a little filly and we were concerned about the [soft] ground beforehand,” said winning rider Daniel Tudhope. “It wasn’t ideal, but she handled it fine and will definitely be better on quicker ground. I tried to keep a hold of her as I didn’t want to hit the front too soon. She’s such a good traveller and got the job done when I asked her to quicken.”

The €40,000 TIRSEP yearling is out of Listed Marble Hill S. runner-up Purple Glow (Ire) (Orientate) and is kin to a yearling colt by Rip Van Winkle (Ire). Purple Glow is a granddaughter of MGISW US champion Relaxing (Buckpasser), whose four black-type performers include US champion and MGISW sire Easy Goer (Alydar), GI Go For Wand S. heroine Easy Now (Danzig) and GI Ballerina S. winner Cadillacing (Alydar), who in turn is the dam of GI Futurity S. victor Strolling Along (Danzig).

Teofilo’s Permian Takes the Dante

Permian | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

Thursday’s G2 Betfred Dante S. at York was without its main attraction in Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}), but the Oppenheimer homebred ultimately earned greater kudos by staying away as Permian (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) emerged clear-best in this vital blue riband trial. Second to that Gosden trainee in Epsom’s Investec Derby Trial over 10 furlongs Apr. 26, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum’s bay had since added the May 6 Listed Newmarket S. to his tally with authority at that trip but attracted only minor interest in the betting with the emphasis on less-exposed types. Always happy tracking the honest pace under Franny Norton, the 10-1 shot moved past TDN Rising Star Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole and on to a 3/4-of-a-length success, with another TDN Rising Star Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in third a half length behind. “It was a very straightforward race and I suppose they all expected Permian to make the running, but they have gone off very fast and he travelled beautifully,” trainer Mark Johnston said of the winner, who it was later confirmed will be supplemented for the G1 Epsom Derby June 3. “It was very much John Ferguson’s idea to supplement for this race and the rest of us were hesitant about it, but he pushed it and pushed it and Epsom was clearly on his mind after Newmarket. He’s clearly progressing, but I can’t say we weren’t fearing Cracksman coming here. I wasn’t thinking of the Derby a few weeks ago, but you could see from two out today he was going to win.”

Off the mark on debut over seven furlongs on Kempton’s Polytrack last June, Permian was second in a conditions event at that trip at Ayr the following month before bouncing back to win a mile nursery at Windsor in early August and a conditions race also at that distance at Ripon eight days later. After his subsequent fifth in Newcastle’s Blaydon Race Nursery sticking at a mile later that month, it could have beeen argued that he had reached the upper limit of his capabilities but a short break and a step up to 10 furlongs resulted in an improved performance when third behind TDN Rising Star Coronet (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Listed Zetland S. at Newmarket in October. Back with a third as the topweight in a class 2 handicap on firm ground over nearly 12 furlongs at Bath Apr. 14, the homebred gave Cracksman fans a scare in the Investec Derby Trial when looking to have that rival beaten everywhere bar the line before going down by a short-head. The third home, Bay of Poets (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), was 1 3/4 lengths behind and was subsequently beaten less than that by the current Derby favourite Cliffs of Moher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in Chester’s Listed Dee S. and the well-beaten fourth Tartini (Giant’s Causeway) went on to be third in the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial. Handed this opportunity after improving again to score by 4 1/2 lengths in the Newmarket S., Permian seized it with the relish of a colt still on the ascent.

Following the Godolphin trio of Wolf Country (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Benbatl and Swiss Storm (GB) (Frankel {GB}) throughout the early stages, he moved smoothly as the pace sorted out the field halfway down the straight. Committed by Franny Norton with the furlong pole just ahead, Permian readily asserted from Benbatl as Crystal Ocean stayed on with promise. “He’s gone from strength to strength this year and at Epsom I probably took him there five to 10 strides too early,” his rider commented. “He’s a tough campaigner and got what he deserved today. I couldn’t pull him up, but I like him over this trip.”

John Ferguson was delighted afterwards as he contemplated a three-pronged assault on the Derby with this race’s first two and the Lingfield Derby Trial winner Best Solution (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). “It was a genuinely-run race. William [Buick] was keen to make it on Wolf Country and gave Franny a chance to sit in,” Godolphin’s chief executive said. “Permian finished it off really well, with Benbatl at his girths all the way down the straight. I’ve already spoken to Sheikh Mohammed and he is as thrilled as we are and is very keen to have this horse supplemented for the Derby. Saeed [bin Suroor] had Best Solution win the Lingfield Derby Trial and Benbatl finish second in the Dante so we have to sit down, think, decide and talk to Sheikh Mohammed about that and what he thinks is the right thing to do. It’s just great to be in a season where so many three-year-olds have a live chance and no doubt in time we will find out exactly where they stand. If Churchill stays the mile and a half he is going to be a very tough nut to crack, but these horses all deserve to take their chances and it’s just great to be going to the party.” Benbatl’s trainer Saeed bin Suroor added, “I’m happy with that, he still needs more experience but he’s learning all the time. He shows us he is a good horse at home. A mile and a quarter looks to be his trip, but we’re still looking at the Derby as his aim, along with Best Solution. Obviously, Sheikh Mohammed will make the decision.” Sir Michael Stoute expressed reluctance to commit Crystal Ocean to a Derby tilt, but refused to rule out the possibility. “I wouldn’t, but he has an owner that might want to,” he said.

Out of a dual listed winner over a mile and nine furlongs in Tessa Reef, Permian is therefore a half-brother to Second Wave (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) who was runner-up in last year’s 10-furlong Listed Wolferton H. at Royal Ascot and the MSP Samana Cay (Authorized {Ire}) who also stayed this far. The second dam, the Listed Prix Amandine scorer Massaraat, is a full-sister to the great Miesque (Nureyev), whose top-class progeny Kingmambo, East of the Moon (Private Account), Miesque’s Son and Mingun all excelled at up to a mile and a quarter. The family, which also features the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Rumplestiltskin (Ire) (Danehill) and the European champion Six Perfections (Fr) (Celtic Swing {GB}) among many others, does feature a trio of fillies who made a mark at an exalted level at the Derby trip. They are the G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Silkwood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), last year’s G1 English and Irish Oaks runner-up Architecture (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Tapestry (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), successful in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks at this venue. Tessa Reef also has a yearling colt by New Approach (Ire).

Blond Me | Racing Post

Blond Me, who ran 10th of 11 in October’s G1 Premio Lydia Tesio after annexing Turkey’s G2 International Topkapi Trophy in September, was let go as the outsider of four in this contest shorn of likely market leader So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), but made a mockery of her 11-1 odds with a gutsy display on the Knavesmire. Racing under a firm grip in third from the outset as The Black Princess enjoyed a soft lead on the front end, she inched ever closer in the straight and kept on resolutely under a final-quarter drive to deny that rival for a fourth black-type score nearing the line. South African MG1SW Smart Call ran on well on to finish a close-up third in her first start for the Sir Michael Stoute team. “She’s been in super order at home and, although the [soft] ground was a concern, fair play to Andrew [Balding] and her owner Mrs [Barbara] Keller for taking the chance of running her and it’s paid dividends,” said winning rider Oisin Murphy. “You’d think she wants fast ground, judging by her action and the way she moves at home, but maybe she’s improved and, hopefully, can build on it.”

Kin to the 2-year-old colt White Turf (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire), Blond Me is the leading performer produced by Holda (Ire) (Docksider), who is a winning half-sister to G1 MacKinnon S. hero Glass Harmonium (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) and G3 September S. and G3 John Porter S. victor Arab Spring (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}). Her third dam Well Head (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), who produced MG1SW US champion Conduit (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), is a half-sister to G1 Champion S. and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas-winning sire Spectrum (Ire) (Rainbow Quest) and to the dam of MG1SW European champion distaffer Petrushka (Ire) (Unfuwain).
