Todd Pletcher has been in the spotlight for a long time and his list of accomplishments is an almost endless one. But his finest moment may have come last Saturday at Churchill Downs, where he broke that 1-for-45 hex and won the GI Kentucky Derby with Always Dreaming (Bodemeister). The man of the hour, Todd Pletcher, is our guest on this week’s Thoroughbred Daily News podcast, brought to you by Taylor Made.

Chester Vase Success For Galileo’s Venice Beach

4th at CHE, Gr. Stk, £75,000 G3 MBNA Chester Vase (12f 63y) Winner: Venice Beach (Ire), c, 3 by Galileo (Ire)

By Sean Cronin

VENICE BEACH (IRE), c, 3, Galileo (Ire)–Danedrop (Ire), by Danehill.

O-Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor & Flaxman Stables; B-Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt (IRE); T-Aidan O’Brien; J-Ryan Moore. £42,533. Lifetime Record: 4-2-1-1, £52,167.

Continuing the buoyant form of the Ballydoyle stable in Britain, Venice Beach justified Ryan Moore’s pick of the yard’s quartet and 5-2 favouritism to lead home a Rosegreen one-two-three. Off the mark over this trip by 5 1/2 lengths in a Tipperary maiden Apr. 20, the bay tracked the leader The Anvil (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) on the rail and when the gap came after the home turn he was into the lead with just over a furlong left. Driven out as Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}) closed in, he had 1 1/4 lengths to spare over that barnmate at the line, with The Anvil a nose away in third. In doing so, the half-brother of Arc and King George heroine Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}) provided Aidan O’Brien with a fifth consecutive renewal and record eighth in total.

“I thought it was a very good performance from a lightly-raced colt who is still learning,” Moore said. “He started very well, but they didn’t go mad up front and he was still a bit babyish through the race. He was still looking around after he had gone to win the race and is a colt with plenty of potential. He has a beautiful pedigree and a good brain.” O’Brien added, “We knew he stays a mile and a half, but he’s a bit lazy and babyish and so it was important to bring him here to learn. The lads will talk about the Derby, but he handles quick ground and I think this is a horse who will improve.”

Naaqoos’s Aladdine Wires the Texanita

ALADDINE MAGIC IN THE TEXANITA

Aladdine ran third in Deauville’s Aug. 15 Listed Prix de la Vallee d’Auge after breaking through in her July 18 Chantilly debut, and lined up for this pattern-race bow returning off an Apr. 4 second back at Chantilly and an Apr. 21 conditions score going six panels at Fontainebleau last time. Breaking sharply from the outside box to lead from flagfall, she held sway throughout and required little urging once shaken up approaching the final eighth to register a career best in comfortable fashion.

Katerini is a granddaughter of G2 Prix d’Astarte victress Navratilovna (Nureyev), who is kin to three stakes-winning producers including MG1SP G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot winner Vilikaia (Nureyev) and G1 Prix de la Salamandre-winning multiple highweight Maximova (Fr) (Green Dancer), the latter being dam of five black-type performers headed by G1SW sire Septieme Ciel (Seattle Slew) and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Macoumba (Mr. Prospector).

Deauville Another For Galileo At Chester

2nd at CHE, Gr. Stk, £75,000 G3 sportingbet.com Huxley S. (10f 70y) Winner: Deauville (Ire), c, 4 by Galileo (Ire)

By Tom Frary

Confidently backed into favouritism to get Ballydoyle off the mark at the May meeting, last year’s GI Belmont Derby winner Deauville led from pillar to post to secure another pattern-race success at this fixture for his sire, stable and jockey. Galileo’s record in group races around the “Roodeye” is 10 winners from 21 runners, with seven others filling the placings and it is a record that the Chester faithful take seriously especially when his representative has the best form in the race.

That is the case with the still lightly-raced Deauville, whose career-defining moment in New York came between a second in the G2 Dante S. at York in May and third in the GI Arlington Million. A length second to Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Gordon Richards S. over this 10-furlong trip at Sandown last time Apr. 28, the bay had quicker conditions this time and put his rivals instantly on the back foot with a rapid break to bag the all-important lead and rail advantage. Placing rival after rival under pressure before the home turn, his only real threat arrived via the Stoute representative Poet’s Word, but he had enough left to hold on and continue the charmed run of connections.

For Ryan Moore, the start was key. “He jumped a length and a half quicker than them all and then I was able to get into a very comfortable rhythm and do what I wanted to do,” he said. “He loves fast ground and a track like this and was a grade one winner who knows how to race, so he was able to control it.” Aidan O’Brien added, “We will look at the Curragh [for May 28 G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup] and [Royal] Ascot [for the June 21 G1 Prince of Wales’s S.] and we’ll try to split our horses up if we can. He’s a very versatile horse and a mile and a quarter is probably as far as he wants to go. He’s a very professional, straightforward, genuine and sound horse.”

Deauville’s useful dam has also produced the Corsican (Ire), who was the result of the first of her ongoing dates with Galileo. Successful in the G3 Newbury Arc Trial, he was also fourth in the 2015 G1 Prince of Wales’s S. The dam is a half to Callwood Dancer (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), champion grass mare in Canada and winner of the GII Nassau S. and runner-up in the GI E. P. Taylor S., as well as the G2 Oaks d’Italia heroine Contredanse (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

The third dam Dish Dash, who was successful in the G2 Ribblesdale S., produced the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S.-winning sire Maroof and was also responsible for the dam of this stable’s Desert King (Ire) who was at the forefront of the revival of Ballydoyle in 1997 when completing the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas-Irish Derby double. His unraced half-sister Dawn Attack (Ire) (Fantastic Light) is the dam of four black-type performers headed by the MGSW and G1SP Hazard (Aus) (Flying Spur {Aus}). Walklikeanegyptian has a 2-year-old full-brother and yearling full-sister to the winner to come.

Dylan Mouth solo terzo a Chelmsford sui 2800..

O’Brien looks to Cliffs to impose himself on Derby market

Cliffs Of Moher: a general 8-1 third favourite for the Derby
Cliffs Of Moher : a general 8-1 third favourite for the Derby,  Alain Barr

By Lewis Porteous,

Homeserve Dee Stakes (Listed Race) | 1m2½f | 3yo | ITV4/RUK

As a Derby trial, the Dee Stakes has had little bearing on the Epsom showstopper since Kris Kin did the double in 2003 but there is good reason to believe Friday’s contest could have the biggest impact any race has had on a Classic market all week.

With the Investec-backed Derby in mind, it will come as little surprise to hear most of the intrigue surrounds yet another son of super sire Galileo from Aidan O’Brien’s all-star Ballydoyle stable in Tipperary.

The colt in question is Cliffs Of Moher, the mount of Ryan Moore and who is a general 8-1 third-favourite for the Derby having impressed with a wide-margin success in a Leopardstown maiden last October.

O’Brien chases a sixth win in the race, yet not one of of his five previous Derby winners progressed from the Dee Stakes.

Statistics are there to be rewritten, though, and whereas O’Brien saddled four in Thursday’s Chester Vase – perhaps unsure of the pecking order – Cliffs Of Moher goes it alone for the man who has already pocketed the first two Classics of the season with the minimum fuss.

O’Brien, who heads the Derby market with 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill, said: “We always liked him last year and he was very green the first time before winning by nearly six lengths from Orderofthegarter, who is a very smart colt.

“We weren’t sure whether we were going to get him out but if he was going to be ready for the Derby he had to run this week. He’s just ready to start and will have to learn a lot here in a short time but we’ve been very happy with his work at home.”

Sir Michael Stoute was the last man to compete the Dee-Derby double with Kris Kin in 2003 and unleashes another Derby entry in this year’s race courtesy of Mirage Dancer.

The similarities do not stop there, as like Kris Kin 14 years ago, Mirage Dancer goes into the Dee off the back of a 7f maiden success at Doncaster last October.

A 33-1 shot for the Derby, he is yet another talented son of Frankel and, like his father, carries the famous silks of Prince Khalid Abdullah.

Lord Grimthorpe, the owner’s racing manager, said of the Juddmonte homebred: “He’s a work in progress. He’s a scopey horse and took a little bit of time to come to hand this year but Michael has been pleased with him and we hope whatever he does he will continue progressing.”

The Derby entries do not stop there, with connections of Fujaira Bridge and Star Of Rory also clutching golden tickets to the greatest Flat race in the world.

Having shown promise in three runs as a juvenile, including a second to subsequent 2,000 Guineas runner-up Barney Roy, Fujaira Bridge was off the mark at Ripon on his seasonal reappearance.

Trainer Roger Varian said: “He’s a promising horse who will like the ground. The step up in trip should suit him, for all this is a jump in class.”

Having failed to handle the track at Epsom last year, the Derby might not be on Star Of Rory’s agenda but representing Chester specialist Tom Dascombe, warrants respect.

Dascombe said: “I thought he was one of my best chances of the week, especially if we get a bit of rain. I like this horse a lot and expect him to progress as the season goes on.”

Bay Of Poets has already tested his Classic credentials when third behind Derby second-favourite Cracksman in Epsom’s trial last month, with the runner-up Permian already franking the form with an easy success at Newmarket since.

“I was pleased with his first run,” said trainer Charlie Appleby. “At the present time, a mile and a quarter is his optimum trip.”

Richard Hannon, who bids for back-to-back wins in the Dee with Majeste having struck last year with Viren’s Army, said: “He has developed well over the winter but off his work is suggesting he wants further.

“He ran no sort of race at Newmarket and so I will need to see how he runs before deciding where we are with him.”

Chester Cup-winning trainer Andrew Balding bids to cap a fine week with Max Zorin and said: “He has come on a bundle from his run in the Feilden Stakes. He’s won at the track and the extra furlong should be to his advantage.”

Fast ground could see Apex King head to Lingfield on Saturday instead, while Marco Botti fears Al Hamdany may find the opposition a little hot to handle.
