European highweight distaffer as a juvenile and Europe’s leading sophomore off the back of five Group 1 wins last term, Derrick Smith’s Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) duly landed prohibitive odds of 1-3 with an uncomplicated seasonal return in Monday’s G2 Mooresbridge S. at Naas. The 4-year-old bay, coming back from a game win in Ascot’s Oct. 15 G1 Queen Elizabeth II S., asserted for control after the initial strides of the 10-furlong test and soon held a two-length buffer racing under a firm grip. Allowed a breather by Ryan Moore at the end of the back straight, she was nudged along approaching the final furlong and pushed clear in the closing stages to easily account for Moonlight Magic (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) by 3 1/2 lengths. Useful yardstick Brendan Brackan (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) was two lengths further adrift in third.

Under pressure and detached from the main body of the field passing halfway, the 10-1 chance powered into contention along the rail approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly for continued urging in the closing stages, despite a late leftward drift, to score by a neck from Rockin Fella (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}). The €37,000 GOFSPT yearling, who becomes the first winner for Tweenhills Farm & Stud’s G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Havana Gold (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), is the sole foal so far out of a distant relative of the GIII Boiling Springs Breeders’ Cup H. winner Storm Dream (Ire) (Catrail), who was also third in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Cloth of Stars had enjoyed an ideal warm-up to this prestigious prize by winning the G3 Prix Exbury Mar. 19 and the G2 Prix d’Harcourt at Chantilly three weeks ago and it proved mostly straightforward as he registered an overdue first success at the top level. Keen in the hands of Mickael Barzalona in third initially, the 7-10 favourite was caught in a pocket on the rails in early straight but once the gap appeared he showed his trademark acceleration to seize the lead passing the 300-metre marker. Kept honest late on by the surging Zarak (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}), the bay held on to prevail by a short neck, with Silverwave (Fr) (Silver Frost {Ire}) 3/4 of a length away in third. “We had some worries, because he didn’t really settle early on but it didn’t stop him and he quickened nicely,” Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard commented. “We’ll probably wait and see what to do now, as he’s already had three runs this season and now has his Group 1.”

Alpha Centauri towered over her rivals in the preliminaries and duly attracted sufficient support to make her the 2-1 favourite to become the latest notable winner from the prolific dual-purpose Jessie Harrington stable. Sharp enough to gain the early lead and the far rail, the imposing grey was sent clear from the quarter pole by Colm O’Donoghue and was able to be eased late to record a comprehensive 2 1/2-length success from Ballydoyle’s fellow newcomer Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War). “What was worrying me was the size of her,” her trainer said of the imposing grey. “She’s the biggest two-year-old I have. When she came to me before Christmas she weighed 530 kilos which is heavier than most of the jumpers. I sent them back three times to weigh her because I said ‘you must have got it wrong’. She still weighs over 500 kilos and it’s amazing how big she is. She just has a relentless stride. She has plenty of pace, but you’d imagine she’ll be better over longer as she’s out of a Caerleon mare. We’ll see where we go now. She loved that ground.” The dam’s first foal was Ballydoyle’s useful Tenth Star (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), winner of the Listed Golden Fleece S. who was also runner-up in the G2 Royal Lodge S. Emerging as a miling force this term with an authoritative win in the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc over a mile at Saint-Cloud Apr. 2, Godolphin’s acquisition Jimmy Two Times returned to the same course and distance to justify that purchase and 7-10 favouritism for the all-powerful Fabre stable. Settled in fourth early by Vincent Cheminaud, the grey was stoked up on the home turn before being held on to for his final surge. Finally let go with just over a furlong remaining, he quickly had the call and held a half-length advantage at the line from the closer Kourkan (Fr) (American Post {GB}), with the winner’s top-class stablemate Usherette (Ire) (Shamardal) ending up 1 1/4 lengths away in third on her return.

Straight Shooter received overwhelming support at the tills for this newcomer’s test and justified odds-on favouritism with a blistering frontrunning display. The €400,000 ARAUG yearling was sharply away to seize immediate control and held sway under a taut rein into the straight. Nudged along to show his mettle approaching the final furlong, the 2-5 chalk surged clear under minimal coaxing in the closing stages to easily account for Zaryio (Fr) (Rio de la Plata) by seven lengths.

Shuffled back to be last of the eight approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 34-5 chance quickened smartly to challenge wide with 100 metres remaining and was ridden out to prevail by a nose from Speciality (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}), a daughter of MG1SW Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), in a blanket finish. The homebred bay becomes the second scorer, from as many foals to race, produced by Olga Prekrasa (Kingmambo) and is a half-sister to last term’s G1 Prix Jean Part winner and G1 Prix du Moulin third Zelzal (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Un Parioli Sisal Matchpoint G3 come non se ne vedevano da anni. Bello, misterioso, avvincente. Di fronte ad un pubblico davvero numeroso quantificabile in 10,000 unità, numero più o meno, ma con un movimento sul campo che certifica la grandissima giornata. Oltre €120,000 raccolti sul campo, il 110% in più rispetto al primo maggio dello scorso anno. Un successone! A risolvere le 2000 Ghinee italiane un fortissimo Anda Muchacho (Helmet) che, con in sella un magistrale Dario Vargiu, ha messo il collare al favorito Patriot Hero (Pivotal) che invece, con Frankie in sella, non è riuscito a mantenere l’imbattibilità in 3 uscite. Lo score illibato lo ha invece mantenuto lo spettacolare figlio di Helmet (Exceed And Excel) che non solo ha vinto ma ha stravinto una corsa complicatissima, di per se, da un ritmo non adeguatissimo al tipo di corsa dalla quale ci si aspetta sempre qualcosa di più. Se da una parte il tabu Parioli è rimasto tale per Frankie Dettori, ora non lo è più per Bruno Grizzetti che, vuoi o non vuoi, è pur sempre il comandante in capo della Cavallo in Testa di Micol Borgato e prima di oggi non era mai riuscito a vincere il Parioli. Photo credit Domenico Savi.

Come detto, Anda ha risolto una corsa complicatissima perchè davanti hanno fatto un ritmo sonnolento fino in dirittura con Aspettatemi (Red Rocks) che ha preso iniziativa per non morire d’inedia ma con parziali tutt’altro che selettivi. Tutti aspettavano un Dulciboy (Paco Boy) o un Sun Devil (Desert Prince) in avanti, ed invece no, nessuno a voler dare riferimenti… 
E così che in cima alla dirittura Patriot Hero, gioco forza, ha dovuto prendere iniziativa ed andare in lunga progressione prestandosi lui a fare da bersaglio mobile per quelli dietro. Dario Vargiu lo ha capito subito ed ha lanciato il suo in un lungo inseguimento in versione condor ed un definitivo aggancio che si è concretizzato solo nelle fasi finali, quando Patriot aveva esaurito le energie dal serbatoio mentre Anda ne ha attinto a piene mani, fornendo un secondo scatto devastante. Chi non ha trovato spazio, in tutto questo, è stato Amore Hass (Azamour) il quale, da buon cavallo, doveva utilizzare tutti i metri e la lunghezza della pista a sua disposizione, ed invece si è “infognato” a cercare un varco tra i primi due, che non glielo hanno concesso. 

Mai della corsa, seriamente, Together Again il quale ha pagato tantissimo la corsa sonnolenta. Si, vero, sono andati piano all’inizio ma i concorrenti hanno fatto una dirittura a tutta canna, tanto che il tempo non è affatto male: Il cronometro ha stoppato lo scandire delle lancette a 1m 36.60s, una misura buonissima anche se peggiore rispetto alle femmine. 

Un attimo, ci arriviamo a loro. Intanto diciamo che si tratta di un’altra vittoria Incolinx 7 anni dopo quella di Worthadd (Dubawi) e come quello, che sfatò il mito di Bonconte Di Montefeltro vincendo Parioli e Derby nella stessa stagione, il portacolori dell’Ing Romeo ci riproverà più cattivo che mai. Quanto a miti da sfatare, per Frankie è il secondo posto consecutivo in una corsa che non è mai riuscito a vincere. Dettori si è comunque prestato con la sua immagine a realizzare autografi e foto ad un pubblico di assatanati fan che lo hanno assediato. Parlando di Patriot Hero a questo punto, alla luce di quanto accaduto, è dura faccia il Derby per difetto di stamina, ma ben presto si saprà qualcosa di più per il suo futuro. Nessun dubbio per Anda, secondo l’ammissione in diretta del suo proprietario. Anda Muchacho, ricordiamo, ha preso la mole dalla mamma Montefino (Shamardal) ed è stato pagato €26,000 al Breeze up di Goresbridge un anno fa. IL VIDEO DEL PARIOLI QUI. IL RISULTATO COMPLETO QUI.

Ed ora il capitolo delle femmine. Dopo inchiesta, partita tardivamente, è sopravvissuta Mi Raccomando (Poet’s Voice) la quale ha vinto il Regina Elena Radio Dimensione Suono 2 G3 battendo in foto, ma in generale di lotta e di governo, una Lady Ramon (Ramonti) che stava per causare un enorme “upset” in quanto il suo era un ruolo di sorpresa. Ma è stata l’unica ad intimidire la portacolori Effevi la quale si è prodotta in una grandissima progressione e, pur dando sempre l’idea di dominare, si è trovata a maneggiare come un cobra la femmina di Luigi Di Dio che le si è presentata all’interno. C’è voluta tutta la furbizia di Fabio Branca (che stavolta non ha sbagliato scelta preferendo la morella, ma anzi l’ha fatta ponderatissima) che ha un pò stretto la rivale ma senza, a detta dei commissari, inficiare nell’ottenimento di una migliore posizione da parte della cavalla montata da Luca Maniezzi. Siamo al limite, però. Mi Raccomando, dunque, ha raccolto il massimo possibile dopo uno sfortunato rientro nel quale non è riuscita a rifinire la condizione causa caduta dall’uscita dalle gabbie, ma si è ripresa con gli interessi questo e quel premio. Mi Raccomando, che ha dimostrato di gradire più metri, ha lasciato ad una corta incollatura la seconda e a tre lunghezze e mezzo Stamp Collecting (Casamento) la quale ha ottenuto anche lei il massimo possibile, ma ben presentata, diremmo veramente al top, da un altro bravissimo master trainer come Raffaele Biondi. Ha provato in avanti, tipo nel Seregno, ma poi si è vista superare dalle 2 di cui sopra, ma mantenendo posizione sulle altre. Quarta, con difetto di stamina, Sopran Verne (Approve) mentre qualcosa da recriminare per Candy Store (Lope De Vega) che è giunta quinta, ma con un finale tardivo. Per la Effevi è la terza vittoria nell’Elena dopo Cherry Collect e Sound Of Freedom, la terza vittoria consecutiva per Stefano Botti, anche lui comandante in capo della gestione del team di Cenaia. Mi Raccomando, a differenza di Anda Muchacho, è una cavalla tutta italiana: Fatta in casa Bezzera, che l’ha venduta alle aste SGA Selezionate per €70,000. Bellissima, morella, e di mole, ha dimostrato tutta la sua attitudine alla distanza. Molto probabilmente però non affronterà i maschi, ma andrà dritta alle Oaks. Le femmine, rispetto ai maschi, hanno avuto una corsa più vera tanto che il tempo è stato un eccezionale 1m 36.10s, vicino al record di Lokaloka nel 2007 di 1m 35,80. Significa che sono andate, ed anche forte.

Questo per quanto riguarda le Classiche. A margine di un convegno spettacolare, abbiamo assistito ad un Botticelli che ha visto la vittoria, dopo intervento di autorità, di Aethos (Dragon Pulse) il quale, pur rientrando e rendendo 2 chili e mezzo, si è messo in “saccoccia” anche il Botticelli Lr dopo il Berardelli G3 già vinto a 2 anni. Ma il portacolori della We Bloodstock, allevato dalla famiglia Parri, pur correndo alla grandissima, sul palo era giunto dietro a Ground Rules (Aussie Rules) il quale ha manifestato molti difetti caratteriali, scartando verso il rivale e producendosi in un sandwich insieme con il compagno Back On Board (Nathaniel) che invece saliva. I commissari ci hanno messo un pò a decidere, ma poi hanno fatto la somma dei “falli” da rigore di Fabio Branca, cumulando quello con l’Elena, ed hanno deciso per il distanziamento per il dotatissimo grigio che rivedremo sicuramente nel Derby, con in sella uno tra Cristian Demuro e Fabio Branca che sembrava, oggi, orientato su Together Again. Comunque, arrivo a tavolino per il quale noi non siamo completamente d’accordo, vista la manifesta superiorità di un cavallo che ha cambiato marcia negli ultimi 200 metri, sbandando si, ma senza mai il dubbio che potesse perdere.

Appuntamento al Derby, dove ci sarà la rivincita tra questi, con in più l’inserimento dei vari Anda Muchacho, Mac Mahon, Together Again, Menuhin e soci… insomma, cominciamo ad entrare nel clima Nastro Azzurro del prossimo 21 Maggio.

Nel Signorino, che lanciava al Repubblica, altro tre su tre per Per Un Dixir (Holy Roman Emperor), il fratellastro di Dylan Mouth, che ha esordito a 4 anni ma non si è mai fermato vincendo sempre nelle tre occasioni in cui è sceso in pista. Da segnalare che in chiusura di pomeriggio Giovane Holden (Iffraaj), ancora un portacolori della Incolinx, anche allevato, ha siglato la sua maiden in scioltezza vincendo in 1m 36,9s, in un tempo non lontano da quelli nel Parioli. Mentre nelle 2 tradizionali debuttanti di apertura pomeriggio sono state così distribuire: Nel Tolouse Lautrec (VIDEO QUI) ha vinto Iframe (Ramonti) per Luigi Riccardi che ha completato i 1000 metri in 57,21. Tra le femmine del Marguerite Vernaut (VIDEO QUI), seconda affermazione con i puledri per Seba Guerrieri con Red Impact (Paco Boy) che ha rifinito il tutto con 1000 metri percorsi in 58,05.
