CUNCO (IRE), c, 3, Frankel (GB)–Chrysanthemum (Ire) (MGSW & G1SP-Ire, $275,329), by Danehill Dancer (Ire). (280,000gns RNA Ylg ’15 TATOCT).

O-Don Alberto Stable; B-Don Alberto Corporation (IRE); T-John Gosden; J-Robert Tart. £36,862. Lifetime Record: 8-2-1-2, £71,328.

The first winner for his sire last term, Cunco had shown useful form on more than one occasion thereafter before signing off with a seventh in the hotly-contested G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in October. Settled last of the quintet early by Robert Tart with his much-vaunted stablemate and 5-6 favourite Monarchs Glen (GB) (Frankel {GB}) proving keen in front, the chestnut who started at 5-1 was gradually wound up for his effort out wide and after wearing down Intern (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) and the other son of Frankel, Frankuus (Ire), in the final strides gained a head success, with a length back to Frankuus and Monarchs Glen eventually ending up fourth, two lengths further adrift.

“He’d been working nicely and wasn’t here for fun,” trainer John Gosden said. “He has plenty of stamina for this ground and may go to the [May 11 G3] Chester Vase, even with a penalty for this, as that track would suit him. The other fellow [Monarchs Glen] wants better ground.”

TROARN (FR) (f, 3, Wootton Bassett {GB}–Darkova, by Maria’s Mon), who was a debut fourth over this trip at Chantilly on debut last time Apr. 3, settled in mid division after the initial strides of this turf bow. Inching ever closer from halfway, the 7-5 chalk challenged going well at the two pole and was pushed clear once taking over approaching the final eighth to comfortably account for Lotus Cafe (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) by two lengths.

The €110,000 ARAUG yearling is the second winner out of the unraced Darkova (Maria’s Mon) and is a full-sister to last term’s MG1SW European highweight Almanzor (Fr) and a yearling colt. She is also kin to the 2-year-old colt Sounds Good (Fr) (Falco). Her second dam is the stakes-winning Darkara (Ire) (Halling), who is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Darinski (Ire) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}) and G3 Prix de Royaumont third Darinska (Ire) (Zilzal), herself the dam of MG1SW European champion distaffer Darjina (Fr) (Zanindar). Galileo’s Ulysses Off To a Flyer In the Gordon Richards

ULYSSES (IRE), c, 4, Galileo (Ire)–Light Shift (G1SW-Eng & G1SP-Ire, $691,954), by Kingmambo.

O/B-Flaxman Stables Ireland Ltd (IRE); T-Sir Michael Stoute; J-Andrea Atzeni. £36,862. Lifetime Record: 8-3-2-0, £249,861.

Last seen finishing fourth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita in November, last year’s G3 Gordon S. winner Ulysses who is a son of the G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo) kicked off his all-important 4-year-old campaign with a bang here when upstaging the race-fit Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Despite the less-than-exacting pace set by that Ballydoyle challenger up ahead, the chestnut who sported the sheepskin noseband which his trainer Sir Michael Stoute has called for on very occasions in the past but notably with his 2000 Guineas hero King’s Best, was settled with two behind early by Andrea Atzeni.

Travelling strongly into contention in midstraight, the 3-1 second favourite came wide to reel in the rail-running long-time leader approaching the furlong pole and assert for a length success, with My Dream Boat (Ire) (Lord Shanakill) three lengths away in third. “The pace was quite slow but he settled, which is the most important thing,” his rider said. “He’s a different horse this year–much bigger and stronger and more mature, so he’s a horse with a bright future. He’s got a high cruising speed, but picks up well and hit the line quite strongly there.”

Frankel’s Atty Persse Makes Winning Return at Sandown

1st at SAN, Hcp, £25,000 bet365 Esher Cup H. (8f 14y) Winner: Atty Persse (Ire), c, 3 by Frankel (GB)

ATTY PERSSE (IRE) (c, 3, Frankel {GB}–Dorcas Lane {GB} {SW & MGSP-Eng, GSP-Fr, $120,205}, by Norse Dancer {Ire}), who was acquired by Godolphin after posting a course-and-distance debut win in his only prior start Sept. 14, occupied a prominent pitch until bumped back a few spots approaching halfway in this Esher Cup. Asked to close on the leaders with three furlongs remaining, the 6-4 favourite was caught in all manner of traffic inside the final quarter mile, but somehow managed to weave a passage and get up to deny Mucho Applause (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) by a short head on the line. The June 3 G1 Epsom Derby entry is the only racecourse representative, to date, for the stakes-winning G2 Ribblesdale S. and G2 Lancashire Oaks placegetter Dorcas Lane (GB) (Norse Dancer {Ire}), who is out of a half-sister to G1 1000 Guineas victress Harayir (Gulch) and to the dual stakes-placed dam of G1 Jebel Hatta scorer Tryster (Ire) (Shamardal). The bay’s fourth dam is G1 Irish Oaks-winning Irish champion distaffer Give Thanks (GB) (Relko {GB}). Sales history: 200,000gns RNA Wlg ’14 TATFOA; 160,000gns RNA Ylg ’15 TATOCT.
