Sunday Seoul & Busan: Always Winner, Haeya Among Those In Action

by gyongmaman

Always Winner headlines a big Sunday of racing in Seoul (11 races from 10:45 to 18:00) while down at Busan (6 races from 12:40 to 17:05), the hitherto unbeaten Haeya returns to action for the first time since January.

Always Winner

Always Winner was a a solid if unspectacular sprint handicapper as he entered his 5th year in January. However, 2017 has found him find top form with gate to wire victories in both the Segye Ilbo Cup in January and the Group 3 Owners’ Association Trophy in March. Both times he’s been allowed off at big prices but he’s bound to get more respect from punters this time.

That’s not to say it will be easy as Choegang Schiller, El Padrino’s conqueror in the 2015 Asia Challenge Cup looks ready to hit form once more while the likes of Parang JuuiboDynamic Jilju and Brian Dean’s Jangsanjewang can’t be ruled out.

At Busan, the feature sees unbeaten US import Haeya (Flatter) race at class 1 for the first time having won all four of her races to date. She was last seen in January but breezed through a barrier trial last week looking in very good shape. She may not be favourite though for the 1400M feature with Doraon Pogyeongseon, a winner at class and distance, beating no fewer than seven of those who return again for this race, last month.

English race cards are here. Notes on the three Seoul races to be simulcast overseas are below:

Race 9: Class 3 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

1. VALLEY STAR – Unimpressed in latest two but is carrying significantly less weight today.

2. MR. MOUNTAIN – Three 2nd place finishes at this level and while he disappointed when well backed last start, he’s worth another go today. Read more of this post

Rothschild Blueblood By Sea the Stars a New Rising Star At Nottingham

By Tom Frary

CRYSTAL OCEAN (GB) (c, 3, Sea the Stars {Ire}–Crystal Star {GB} {SW & GSP-Eng}, by Mark of Esteem {Ire}), who was second in a seven-furlong maiden on debut at Newbury in September, was sent up to race in third from the outset. Galloping strongly to the lead with two furlongs to race, the 7-4 joint-favourite was sent clear soon after and was eased near the line to register an authoritative two-length success from Okool (Fr) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

The winner is a half-brother to the G2 Pride S. and G2 Princess of Wales’s S. scorer Crystal Capella (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), Hwt. Older Mare-Eng at 9 1/2-11f, MGSW-Eng, $550,532, and to the GI Canadian International and G2 King Edward VII S. hero Hillstar (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), Hwt. 3yo-Eng at 11-14f, GISW-Can & MGSW & G1SP-Eng, $1,221,978, as well as the listed winner Crystal Zvezda (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). +CALL TO MIND (GB) (c, 3, Galileo {Ire}–Memory {Ire} {MGSW-Eng, $127,136}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) soon raced under cover in the second rank and remained there through halfway in this first go. Shaken up with three furlongs remaining, the 6-4 chalk made headway into contention approaching the final eighth and was ridden out to deny Commander (GB) (Frankel {GB}) by a neck nearing the line. Najashee (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a half-brother to Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) and Most Improved (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), recovered from an awkward start and was not unduly punished in the closing stages, finishing eighth of nine.

The Queen’s homebred bay becomes the second scorer, from as many foals to race, produced by G2 Cherry Hinton S. and G3 Albany S. winner Memory (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), and is a full-brother to G3 Acomb S. hero Recorder (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). He is also kin to the 2-year-old colt Learn By Heart (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and a yearling colt by Galileo (Ire). His dam is a half-sister to G3 Tyros S. victress Remember Alexander (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), from a family which includes MGSW GI Jockey Club Gold Cup runner-up Generous Rosi (GB) (Generous {Ire}). Excelebration’s Barney Roy Takes the Greenham In Style

ROY’S THE BOY
This year’s 2000 Guineas is shaping into one of the best in recent times now that another fascinating contender has entered the mix in Godolphin’s winter acquisition Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}), who captured Saturday’s G3 JLT Greenham S. at Newbury with the kind of commitment required to make a difference in that Newmarket Classic. Sent off the 5-2 second favourite, the bay who was the striking winner of a mile maiden on his only start at Haydock in September tracked the pace up the centre under James Doyle but looked booked for second as fellow Godolphin representative and 9-4 favourite Dream Castle (GB) (Frankel {GB}) went into the lead passing the two-furlong pole.

Replying to the whip to gather in that rival with 150 yards remaining, he surged clear in the run to the line to register a commanding two-length success with ears pricked, as the solid yardstick Zainhom (Street Cry {Ire}) fared best of the well-beaten remainder four lengths away. “It was a funny sort of race, as they steadied it in front and then set it alight to get racing a long way down and I was slightly concerned three down,” Doyle explained. “Once I have him a couple of taps his stride pattern changed and he got lower to the ground and lengthened and galloped right through the line. He’s crying out for a step up to a mile and will stay beyond that, no problem. He was still having a look after the line and will learn so much from that.”

It was in this race six years ago that Frankel first encountered Excelebration and he duly brushed aside that top-class opponent by four lengths before returning here to make the margin five as they squared up again 13 months later in this track’s feature G1 Lockinge S. Frankel’s Dream Castle, who had over-raced initially without cover stuck out towards the stand’s side, was let down by Oisin Murphy inside the final quarter mile and it looked temporarily as if the familiar pattern would be repeated through their sons. As Excelebration had so cruelly been time after time when taking on the Juddmonte tartar, Barney Roy appeared to be coming off second-best in the battle of the royal blue but those who recalled the Hannon representative’s stirring finish at Haydock on his debut may not have panicked. As he demonstrated at Doncaster earlier in the month, the favourite’s forte is speed, being out of the sprinter Sand Vixen (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and as soon as Barney Roy found his stride the complexion of the race changed completely.

Dream Castle may have been paying for his effort from the two to the one, but once the winner was past him he ate up the ground with relish to record the third-fastest time in the Greenham in the last 30 years, eclipsed only by the same stable’s Dick Turpin (Ire) (Arakan) in 2010 and star sprinter Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) two years ago.

For trainer Richard Hannon, it was a first Greenham in his own name after he took over from Hannon Sr who enjoys the joint record of six successes alongside the late Sir Henry Cecil. Yet another relatively cheap purchase to emerge as a top-class prospect from East Everleigh, Barney Roy will head to the May 6 Newmarket highlight as a leading protagonist alongside Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) and Eminent (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in a race of many intriguing angles. “He has relaxed enormously, as he was a little bit keen, and in fairness that is more or less down to Sean Levey,” Hannon explained. “I was a bit worried coming back from a mile to seven and you can see why, as he just took his time getting going.

I thought he was in trouble four down then he went ‘whoosh’. I’ve liked him for a long time, though. He has got a chance of going to the Guineas. He will get a trip as well now that he is more relaxed. I did say in the summer he might get a Derby trip, whether he gets that far I don’t know. I definitely think he will stay further, but a strong-run mile will suit him well.”

Saeed bin Suroor was far from downcast about Dream Castle, who was only making his debut three weeks ago and he commented, “I think he was too keen in the race. He is a horse that needs to settle. His options are open and we will talk to Sheikh Mohammed. There are options in the French and English Guineas and even the Irish Guineas.” Angus Gold, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said of Zainhom, “He wants easier ground and further. Jim [Crowley] and Sir Michael were happy enough. He is a great big, heavy horse that wants ease in the ground. I don’t think he has ever had the speed to be a real genuine miler, as I am sure he wants further. We are certainly not thinking of the Guineas on that. We will let the dust settle then talk to Sir Michael.”

Barney Roy is the first foal out of a daughter of the G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. and G3 Brownstown S. winner Cheyenne Star who was unplaced in two starts over a mile and nine furlongs for Freddy Head. The third dam Charita, who was a listed winner at a mile, is a half-sister to the G2 Premio Emilio Turati winner and G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua runner-up Stanott (Ire) (Mukaddamah) and counts among her descendants the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup, G1 Prix de la Foret and G1 George Ryder S. hero Gordon Lord Byron (Ire) (Byron {GB}). Also from the family of champions Capote and Exceller, Alina also has a 2-year-old filly by Dark Angel (Ire) named Wisdom Mind (Ire) and a yearling filly by Kodiac (Ire).

Fred Darling Success For Sepoy’s Dabyah

2nd at NBY, Gr. Stk, £60,000 G3 Dubai Duty Free S. (Fred Darling S.) (7f) Winner: Dabyah (Ire), f, 3 by Sepoy (Aus)

Dabyah | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

Dabyah accounted for the useful Amabilis (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) and Dubara (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) on debut over this trip at Newmarket in July before coming here in September to win by nine lengths in the conditions race taken by the same connections’s Nathra (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) 12 months earlier. Going on to the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Chantilly the following month, the bay was third and on the premises where it mattered behind Wuheida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) after being ridden on the pace throughout. Steered here to make way for her stablemate Daban (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in Wednesday’s G3 Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket, she was again admirably straightforward making all under Frankie Dettori to complicate 1000 Guineas plans for her owner and trainer. Keeping allcomers at bay under hand riding, she was able to account for the G1 Fillies’ Mile third Urban Fox and a clutch of solid performers with some comfort.

Inevitably, Gosden was invited to draw comparison between the two Naboodah fillies and he said, “The other filly [Daban] is more laid-back and very relaxed and likes to come with a late run, whereas this one is out of the gate and racing. I thought she pricked her ears, which is a good sign and shows she is relaxed in front and she finished out well. We will look at either the French or English Guineas for sure and she and Daban will go for one each. I will talk to her owner and see where we go, but they are two lovely fillies. She will come on for the race, as she actually missed a couple of bits of work. The jockey would like to run Daban at Newmarket and Dabyah in France. She has run well in France before and they get more rain there, so there is likely to be a bit more give. He felt the other filly handled the dip [at Newmarket] well.”

Trainer James Tate said of Urban Fox, “She had a setback six weeks ago with a foot problem. She has not done much work and this has been used as a trial, so we are delighted. She will improve for the step up to a mile and we will get her ready for the Guineas. I didn’t expect her to finish as well as that, given all the work she missed.” Promising’s trainer Richard Hannon is looking at the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Deauville May 14 for the strong-travelling maiden. “She is a lovely filly and there are a lot of positives to take out of it,” he said. “I am favouring France, as there is likely to be more cut in the ground there. I am not sure she really let herself down on that ground today. She will win a nice race and the flat track at Deauville will suit her.”

Dabyah shares her second dam, the G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner and G1 Yorkshire Oaks and G1 Prix Vermeille place-getter Cloud Castle, with one of last year’s success stories in Queen’s Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}). After placing in the G1 Nassau S., G1 Yorkshire Oaks and G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S., that Cheveley Park Stud representative went on to conquer the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and add further gravitas to a formidable family of middle-distance performers renowned for their longevity. Chief among them is Warrsan (Ire) (Caerleon), a dual winner of the G1 Coronation Cup and G1 Grosser Preis von Baden, while his half-brothers Luso (GB) and Needle Gun (Ire) were also able to hold their own at the top level. Cloud Castle’s other notable progeny include Queen’s Trust’s group-winning dam Queen’s Best (GB) (King’s Best) and the listed-winning Reverie Solitaire (Ire) (Nashwan), dam of the G2 Badener Meile winner Royal Solitaire (Ire) (Shamardal). In a show of versatility, the dynasty also features last year’s classy sprinting 2-year-old Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) and Nichols Canyon (GB) (Authorized {Ire}), winner of this year’s Stayers’ Hurdle over three miles at the Cheltenham Festival. Samdaniya has a 2-year-old colt by Iffraaj (GB) named Sam Gold (Ire) and a yearling filly by Dawn Approach (Ire).

Candiani Street in contropiede

Happy Queen, trasferta vincente
