Ultra developed a splint around this time last year and was forced to sidestep all Classic engagements after annexing the 2015 G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp, and had just a second in the July 17 G2 Prix Eugene Adam here and a sixth in Deauville’s Aug. 15 G2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano to add to an unbeaten three-race juvenile campaign. Enjoying favoritism in this comeback, he was well away to race third along the rail in the wake of fellow Godolphin colourbearer Bravo Zolo (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) and easily outclassed overmatched rivals once shaken up for his bid with 300 metres remaining to provide Andre Fabre with a clean sweep of the day’s three stakes races. “He had all sorts of small problems earlier last season which slowed down his training,” explained Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard. “He caught a virus after he returned and was out again for the rest of the year. He’s obviously a good horse, but showed he needed this today and should come on a lot for the run. We’ll wait and see how he improves before making any decisions.”
The homebred chestnut is a half to G3 Prix Minerve victress Synopsis (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) and the dual stakes-placed Epic Simile (GB) (Lomitas {GB}). His dam, herself a daughter of MGSW Italian champion Proskona (Mr. Prospector), is a half-sister to GII Canadian H. winner Calista (GB) (Caerleon) and has also produced the 2-year-old filly Irish Abbey (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Raven’s Pass. Proskona is also the third dam of MG1SW sire Act One (GB) (In the Wings {GB}), and the top-level performers Gharir (Ire) (Machiavellian), who ran third in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, and G1 Fillies’ Mile runner-up Summer Symphony (Ire) (Caerleon).

Thrown into this Classic trial after a debut success in which the winning margin of a short neck did not tell the whole story over a mile on the Polytrack at Chantilly Mar. 2, Via Ravenna proved that Andre Fabre’s renowned judgment has not wavered an inch by readily dismissing her rivals and completing an afternoon double for her in-form trainer. Anchored in last early as stablemate Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) had been in the earlier G3 Prix Djebel, the homebred was similarly able to close down a sizeable deficit within the space of a furlong as she was brought wide for her challenge by Vincent Cheminaud. Swooping on Thais with 150 metres remaining, the bay asserted to put herself firmly in the picture for a tilt at the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Deauville May 14. “She is still a little bit green and inexperienced, so there is room for improvement,” her trainer said. “She holds an entry in the Pouliches and that is where she will go.”
The winner, who captured the G3 Prix des Reservoirs as a juvenile, is a half-sister to the G3 Prix de Lieurey winner Via Medici (Ire) (Medicean {GB}). She was later the dam of the listed-winning and G1 Premio Lydia Tesio third Via Pisa (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) and the G2 Balanchine runner-up Via Firenze (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Others out of Via Milano are the stakes-placed Fifth Commandment (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and the G3 Prix Vanteaux third Via Manzoni (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), while she has a 2-year-old colt by Mastercraftsman (Ire) named Mister President (Fr).

Ridden with hands and heels all the way, the 68,000gns TATFOA foal and 90,000gns TAOCT yearling kept finding to hold Angel of the South (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by a neck. “He’s a smart horse and he had the race won at the furlong pole,” jockey Jamie Spencer said of Rock of Estonia, who becomes the first winner for Tally-Ho Stud’s now-deceased Society Rock (by Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). “He’s a big horse with a good action and a good mind.” Trainer Charlie Hills added, “He showed good speed and hopefully will improve off this. He could come back here for a race in three weeks’ time, or there is a race at Ascot during the Sagaro meeting.” The winner hails from a Juddmonte family in which the Daytona H. winner and GIII San Simeon H. runner-up Night Chapter (GB) (Night Shift) is a key member alongside the Listed Prix Coronation winner Dreamt (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Al Wukair arrived to post for this vital Classic prep with a strong vibe behind him, mostly down to the dazzling impression he had made on his first two starts as a juvenile which were marked by a raw and almost casual brilliance. His performance during a facile debut success over this trip at Saint-Cloud in September had a touch of Montjeu about it, visually at least, and was followed by an authoritative 1 3/4-length defeat of Sunday’s G3 Prix Vanteaux winner Gold Luck (Fr) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) in the Listed Prix Isonomy over a mile at Deauville in October. The winning margin only served to flatter that admirable half-sister to Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), who did not belong in his territory once he unveiled a killer turn of speed when the whip was applied in the race in which the aforementioned Montjeu first came to prominence back in 1998.
Slowly away here as he had been on both occasions in 2016, Al Wukair looked to be out of the mix entirely passing halfway as he became detached with last year’s G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner National Defense tanking to the front and past African Ride’s pacemaker Oriental (Jpn) (Smart Strike). Given time to warm up by Gregory Benoist, the bay made up three lengths in the space of a furlong when delivered wide under hand riding, albeit still running notably greenly as Straight Right (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) tackled National Defense. Without a serious ask from his rider, the exciting Al Shaqab representative was able to take the measure of the latter passing the 100-metre mark and draw away to win with seemingly plenty to spare. “I expected him to be outrun early on and this was very good experience for him,” trainer Andre Fabre commented. “He will now definitely go to Newmarket for the [May 6 G1] 2000 Guineas.” National Defense’s trainer Criquette Head-Maarek said of the runner-up, “I am very happy with him–he’s done nothing wrong and will appreciate an extra furlong. I also think he is better around a turn than on a straight course, but as the [G1 Poule d’Essai des] Poulains is on Deauville’s straight track we have no other choice. I am favouring Deauville over Newmarket.”
Andre Fabre prepped Pennekamp with a win in this in 1995 before he inflicted a narrow defeat of England’s seemingly unbeatable Celtic Swing (GB) at Newmarket, while two years earlier his great Zafonic had been turned over by Kingmambo in a star-studded renewal of this race prior to turning the Guineas into a procession. He appears the chief threat to Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at this stage, before the Craven and Greenham are played out, in what should make for a tantalising clash between the two legendary stables of Europe. His sire Dream Ahead’s progeny have tended to be on the fast side so far and the dam Macheera was a miler for Robert Collet, while Al Wukair’s half-sister Witches Brew (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) was listed-placed at a mile but that may have been as far as she wanted to go despite being by a stouter sire. Al Wukair looked as if he needed to step back up in distance here and that stamina undoubtedly comes from the second dam, the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Caerlina whose daughter La Nuit Rose (Fr) (Rainbow Quest) was third in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. She in turn is the dam of Tam Lin (GB) (Selkirk), winner of the GII Kelso H. and G3 Winter Hill S., and she is connected to the GII West Virginia Derby runner-up Souper Colossal (War Front), the G2 Kinko Sho winner Current Mirotic (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}) and his G3 Kyoto Himba S.-winning half-sister Hikaru Amaranthus (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}). The dam has a 2-year-old full-brother to Al Wukair named Dream Today (Ire) who sold for a mere 42,000gns to Mark Johnston Racing at Tattersalls October and a yearling filly by Charm Spirit (Ire).

Nudged along passing the two pole, the 19-10 favourite quickened well once an opening appeared and ran on strongly in the closing stages to prevail by a head from Bijin (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). Terre (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), a full-sister to Treve (Fr), encountered all manner of traffic problems at the business end of the race and finished well to be a close-up fourth.
