Altior, Mega Fortune and Finian’s Oscar: Another Excellent Weekend For Goffs Graduates…

Altior’s unbeaten record over fences was maintained in superb style as the seven year old landed the Grade 2 Betfair Exchange Chase at Newbury on Saturday for Nicky Henderson, Nico De Boinville and owner Mrs Patricia Pugh.  Altior gave another excellent jumping display before easing to a 13 length win, and last year’s Supreme Novice Hurdle winner was subseuqently cut to 1-3 for the Grade 1 Arkle Chase next month at the Cheltenham Festival.

Altior was purchased at the Land Rover Sale 2013 by David Minton of Highflyer Bloodstock from Kilmoney Cottage Stud for €60,000.

The Gordon Elliott trained Mega Fortune is firmly on target for the Triumph Hurdle following his victory in the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday.  Ridden by Davy Russell, the four year old turned the tables on favourite Bapaume, who he had finished third to in a Grade 2 contest at Leopardstown Christmas meeting, to win by 3 1/2 lengths for owner Chris Jones.

Mega Fortune was sold as a yearling at Goffs in 2014 by Airlie Stud to Andy Oliver for €19,000.

Finian’s Oscar meanwhile followed last month’s Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle success with a comfortable win in the Listed Free Bet At 188Bet Novices’ Hurdle at Exeter on Saturday for Colin Tizzard and Ann and Alan Potts.  Sent off 1/16 favourite, the five year old made easy work of the opposition under Tom O’Brien and will run in either the Neptune or Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Finian’s Oscar was bred and sold by Richard and Martin O’Keefe at Goffs December National Hunt Sale 2012 to Richard Frisby for €24,000.

Vibrant Trade For Breeding Stock On Final Day Of Goffs February Sale…

A strong selection of breeding stock drew an international bunch of buyers to the final session of the three day Goffs February Sale today.  Trade opened on a high note as the Dubawi filly out of Islington, Edith Wharton (Lot 498), from the Ballymacoll Stud Dispersal draft was knocked down to Andy Smith for White Birch Farm at €200,000, while the top price of the sale came late in the evening when Milltown Stud’s Group placed mare Military Angel (Lot 746 pictured), by Big Brown, was purchased by MAB Agency for €210,000.

Godolphin’s impressive draft accounted for half of the top ten lots of the day and included the Street Cry mare Expressly (Lot 726), a winning sister to three time Group 1 winner Rio De La Plata, who was bought by John Walsh Bloodstock for €90,000.  Another from the same draft to make €90,000 was the Listed winner Sarinda (Lot 640), purchased by Rabbah Bloodstock.

Reflecting on the three day’s trade at the February Sale Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby said:

The Goffs February Sale has proved to be one of our real success stories of recent years as the preferred option for so many breeders. Indeed, as Europe’s largest mid-winter sale it regularly attracts a diverse catalogue and 2017 turned out to be no exception.

Over half the catalogue was devoted to foals/weanlings/just turned yearlings – call them what you will – and we saw a virtual mirror image of the trends at the foal sales in late 2016. The best sold very well but there was a clear rejection of those felt to be the least commercial. However, the upper end of the market made advances with a higher top price than last year and more lots making €60,000 and over. The clear message is therefore to focus on quality as that is what the market requires although the supply versus demand ratio is a palpable worry for everyone breeding to sell.

Today’s breeding stock sale has enjoyed a vibrant trade with the strongest sector again at the top end and a top price of €210,000 in the last few minutes of the sale. It was a genuine privilege to offer the first part of the complete dispersal of Ballymacoll Stud and fitting that their beautifully bred filly, Edith Wharton was one of the two lots to make the double century at €200,000. That she was bought by White Birch Farm from America, who was so active at Goffs last autumn, is a wonderful vindication of our ability to handle dispersals of such note and market them on a global scale. Alongside their first lots, and the last from the Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal, we were supported with strong drafts from Godolphin, Moyglare, the Aga Khan Studs and several others of note, and we are grateful for their ongoing support of so many Goffs sales.

As ever we are indebted to every vendor and all our purchasers from around the globe, and are delighted to have made a positive start to the year”.

€86,000 Dandy Man Colt Tops Day 2

Day 2 of the Goffs February Sale saw some intense competition among many of Europe’s leading buyers and topping the day was an exceptional Dandy Man colt (Lot 260 pictured) from regular Goffs supporters Collegelands Stud.

After some enthusiastic bidding it was Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock who secured the much sought after relation to high class 2 year olds Johannes and Tamnia on behalf of Glenvale Stud for €86,000.

Cashel Bloodstock enjoyed a successful day with their debut consignment at Goffs, and heading their draft was a popular son of Kodiac (Lot 305). Tally-Ho Stud went to €72,000 to take home this close relation to American superstars Rags To Riches and Jazil.

Following an excellent first day with yesterday’s top price Le Havre filly, Airlie Stud were once again to the fore with a colt by New Approach (Lot 399) from the family of Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Domedriver. The colt was purchased by Richard Fitzsimons of BBA Ireland for €60,000.

As on Day 1, it was The Beeches Stud and their flagship sire Flemensfirth that provided the most expensive of the National Hunt offerings. Lot 472 is an own-brother to Dan Skelton’s promising Knockgraffon and is related to Champion Hurdle winners Morley Street and Granville Again. The colt had no shortage of admirers in the ring and was eventually knocked down to Richard Frisby for €41,000.
