Thunder Snow Peels Away From Rivals in Group 3 UAE 2000 Guineas

Godolphin Trainers Land Two Victories Apiece on Saturday Carnival Card

Saturday February 11, 2017, Meydan Racecourse: Group 1 winner, Thunder Snow ran away with UAE 2000 Guineas sponsored by Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City – District One over 1600m on dirt to give the Godolphin racing operation one of four winners on the night and a total of seven over the Dubai World Cup Carnival double-header weekend. 

Class prevailed in the 2000 Guineas with Thunder Snow, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and victorious on his previous outing in the Group 1 Criterium International at Saint Cloud at the end of October, making short change of the opposition.

Ridden for that big race win by Christophe Soumillon, he was partnered once again by the Belgian and the pair never looked in trouble.

“He impressed me when I won on him in France and that was very testing ground so I thought he would cope with the dirt here and he has,” said Soumillon.

“I was able to get a good position so we have avoided any kickback but, basically, that was easy.

“I was always happy and he did it very well. He should stay further if connections want to go for the UAE Derby but he will be a very nice horse back in Europe.”

Bin Suroor doubled up in the final race on the card, the 2435m The Meydan Hotel Handicap on the turf, thanks to the fast-finishing Prize Money, ridden by Adrie de Vries.

The main support race was the Group 3 Firebreak Stakes sponsored by Meydan One Mall, over 1600m on dirt.

On paper it looked particularly competitive but, in reality, it was pretty much a one horse race with North America possibly never headed before crossing the line seven lengths ahead of runner-up, Ennobled Friend.

Ridden by Richard Mullen and trained by Satish Seemar, the winner now has an unblemished local record, having won all four of his starts in the UAE and improved each time.

“That was obviously his best performance so far and he is just getting better,” said Mullen. “Basically, I was always happy and was able to give him a breather on the home turn.

“From there, he has really responded in great style and it gives the whole team a nice problem to consider as where to go next.”

The first race on the dirt was the The Track Meydan Golf, a 1200m handicap in which Godolphin’s Comicas landed the spoils for trainer Charlie Appleby and his stable jockey, William Buick.  

Sent straight to the front, Comicas never looked in trouble over the shortest trip he has encountered in his career.

“We have to be very pleased with that,” said Buick. “I was pleasantly surprised with how much early speed he produced and that now gives the team a plethora of options as he is a good turf horse, who stays further, as well.” 

Jockey and trainer completed a double courtesy of Bravo Zolo who landed a 1600m turf handicap, the Zabeel Feedmill and penultimate race on the card.

The Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa 1200m turf handicap went to England and the Paul Midgley-trained Final Venture who was recording a second course and distance victory this year under Pat Dobbs.

Never far off the speed, Dobbs sent his mount to the front shortly after halfway and they never looked likely to be caught.

“He is just a very genuine and honest sprinter who has won this nicely and well done to the trainer and his team.”

The meeting opened with the Meydan Tennis Academy, a turf handicap over 1800m in which the Doug Watson-trained Ostaad, ridden by Dane O’Neill, landed the spoils to deny the same owner’s Jaaref, the mount of Jim Crowley and saddled by Ali Rashid Al Rayhi.

“This horse has been a bit disappointing this season and we probably hit the front plenty soon enough,” said O’Neill. “But fair play to the horse he has responded well when the second started to challenge.”

DOMENICA 12 FEBBRAIO 2017. Meydan: Thunder Snow travolgente nelle 2000 Ghinee, North America fa 4 su 4 nelle Firebreak. Dylan Mouth buon terzo in handicap

 

 

Una tempesta di neve nel deserto. Abbiamo giocato con il nome di Thunder Snow (Helmet) ma il discorso fila, se pensiamo come il portacolori Godolphin abbia risolto le UAE 2000 Guineas G3 di Meydan al rientro direttamente dal Criterium International G1 di Saint Cloud dove si prese la briga di vincere facilmente. Più o meno nello stesso modo con il quale ha disposto di avversari, a dir la verità non irresistibili, anche nel deserto, nonostante una posizione di partenza non proprio favorevole con Cristoforo Soumillon che ha cercato comunque di rendergli la vita facile, ed i reiterati attacchi da parte di Bee Jersey (Jersey Town) rimasto in quota per il secondo. Alla fine le lunghezze che si conteranno sono 5 e 3/4 per una vittoria che più nitida non ci sarebbe potuta essere. Terzo, per la cronaca, l’altro blue Cappezzano (Bernardini), ingaggiato più come portaborse di Thunder che altro, con al quarto il Bottiano Qatar Man (Archarcharch). Should stay further, hanno detto quelli di Godolphin. Dovrebbe tenere la distanza, cioè, e dunque un obiettivo plausibile dovrebbe essere quello del UAE Derby G2 anche se, onestamente, sarebbe cosa buona e giusta riportarlo subito in Europa a preparare la stagione Classica. Se non è già fritto. Anche perchè ha iniziato a correre presto, in Maggio, e poi ha fatto tutte le corse buone per i 2 anni raccogliendo un 2° nelle Vintage G2 di Goodwood, secondo di Rivet (poi vincitore di Dewhurst) nelle Champagne Stakes G2, quarto nelle Dewhurst stesse e poi vincitore in Francia di G1. Thunder Snow è un interessantissimo figlio del giovane sire in Europa Helmet (Exceed And Excel), vincitore Classico in Australia, prodotto in casa Darley. IL VIDEO DELLE UAE 2000 GUINEAS QUI.

 

Altro con la storia curiosa in questo Carnival è il 5 anni North America (Dubawi) al quale sembra proprio piacere il clima locale, visto che finora non ha sbagliato un colpo in 4 uscite a Meydan da quando ha lasciato le scuderie di Charlie Appleby e di Godolphin e si è sistemato in quelle Satish Seemar nel Golfo Persico. Il castrone ha vinto di 7 le Firebreak Stakes G3 in preparazione al Godolphin Mile G1 o addirittura qualcosa di più, se continuerà a progredire ancora. North America è stato allevato dalla Qatar Bloodstock, prodotto di una fattrice molto americana come Northern Mischief (Yankee Victor), con molta qualità nel pedigree, che poi lo ha venduto alle Tattersalls per £100,000 ai cugini di Dubai, ma in 6 uscite non era mai riuscito a vincere arrivando ad avere un Rating massimo di 84. Una volta mandato a Dubai la trasformazione: 4 corse e 4 primi, dal debutto locale vinto per 8 lunghezze alla conferma, con stesso distacco, in handicap e poi altre due vittorie fino a quella di ieri con 7 lunghezze di margine in compagnia di Gruppo. 8+8+1,5+7 fanno 24 lunghezze e mezzo distribuite agli avversari. Miracoli del deserto. Dovrà salire ancora ma il profilo a simile a quello di Prince Bishop…. IL VIDEO DELLE FIREBREAK STAKES QUI.

Godolphin comunque si è ritagliato il suo spazio vincendo in generale 4 corse nel pomeriggio, inclusa l’ultima, l’handicap sul miglio e mezzo (IL VIDEO QUI) con il 4 anni Prize Money (Authorized), un castrone, finito per regolare Dylan Mouth (Dylan Thomas) il quale ha corso ancora in progresso rispetto al debutto di qualche settimana fa in stagione, confermando il terzo posto di allora con la stessa identica posizione ma su distanza migliore sebbene uno svolgimento di corsa diverso con calo finale, anzichè finale travolgente dell’ultima volta. Nulla da eccepire, Dylan in contesti simili è un cavallo particolare da montare. Antonio Fresu lo ha tenuto sempre vicino alla testa, adeguandosi fin troppo ad un certo punto, e poi ha anticipato la volata sul finire della curva passando e rimanendo primo fino a 100 dal palo, quando è stato travolto dal blue e perdendo anche il secondo dal locale carneade che risponde al nome di Rembrandt Van Rijn (Peintre Celebre), sfilato all’interno.
