SATONO CROWN

Bred in Japan from European stock, Satono Crown is by the English Derby runner-up Marju out of Jioconda. His dam won two from four as a juvenile in Ireland, including a mile Listed contest, and Satono Crown had precocity enough to win both his two-year-old starts, latterly an 1800m G3 at Tokyo in November, 2014. He made it three on the bounce the following March when winning first-up for the year in Nakayama’s G2 Hochi Hai Yayoi Sho (2000m), but was only sixth to Duramente in Japan’s 2,000 Guineas, the G1 Satsuki Sho (2000m), a month later. He got closer to that rival when third in the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) (2400m) in May and was then rested. His return in November was disappointing as he ran 17th in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) (2000m). Satono Crown made his 2016 bow in the G2 Kyoto Kinen (2200m) on 14 February when, facing soft going for the first time, he raced back to form with a three-length victory over the talented filly Touching Speed.

The Kyōto Kinen (京都記念 Kyōto Kinen?) is a Grade II race in Japan that is open to international horses. It is held mid February at Kyoto Racecourse in Kyoto, Japan.

The race was first run in 1942. It was not run from 1944 to 1947 due to World War II. Initially the race was run over 3,500 metres (about 2 miles or 1.5 furlongs) and the present race is run over 2,200 metres (about 11 furlongs).

Kyōto Kinen has been rated as a Grade II race since 1984 and was opened for foreign trained horses at that time, although foreign horses have never run the race until recently.

It is a popular prep race for Tenno Sho (spring). Takeshiba O, Ten Point, Biwa Hayahide and T M Opera O are horses that won both the Kyōto Kinen and the Tenno Sho. Some horses run this race before going to Dubai. In 2007, Admire Moon won this race and the Dubai Duty Free.

Initially Kyōto Kinen was held twice a year in spring and autumn. The autumn race was abolished 1984 when Japanese domestic race grading was started.

Before the autumn part was abolished, some horses ran both races and five horses won both. Notably, Final Score (1954) and Sky Leader (1974) won both races in the same year.

Giappone: Domenica si corre il Kyoto Kinen! #Makahiki, al rientro dall’Arc, contro Satono Crown con Demuro a bordo

 Domenica in Giappone un confronto davvero molto interessante a Kyoto nel Kyoto Kinen G2 sui 2200 metri in erba per cavalli anziani. Al via ci saranno 10 partecipante di una corsa molto internazionali dove si incroceranno le forme giapponesi, cinesi di Hong Kong e francesi.
Infatti si rivede al via Makahiki (Deep Impact), al rientro dal tentativo nell’Arc de Triomphe G1 dove finì desolatamente 14°, mentre in precedenza aveva vinto il Derby Giapponese G1 per tentare la trasferta francese tutto sommato iniziata bene con il primo posto ottenuto nel Prix Niel G2 proprio a Chantilly. Makahiki per l’occasione avrà in sella Ryan Moore. 
Di contro avrà Satono Crown (Marju), vincitore dell’Hong Kong Vase G1 in Dicembre, che avrà in sella Mirco Demuro. Il Kyoto Kinen vivrà soprattutto di questo dualismo, senza dimenticare la forma giapponese con forma recente che parla a favore di Mikki Rocket (King Kamehameha), recente vincitore del Nikkei Shinshun Hai G2 di Kyoto in maniera convincente.
